With what our faces face on a daily basis — sun exposure being the big one — clay masks are a great way to treat common skin challenges. I like to give my face a good detoxing once a week to make up for not taking good care of my skin during the week (I’m definitely guilty of this!).
Take a night, and treat yourself to a nice, calming bentonite clay mask.
Bentonite clay is here to save the day! — scratch that. The week! This soft volcanic clay is suitable for all skin types. It absorbs toxins, draws out blackheads, kills acne-causing bacteria, and it’s great for spot treatments, too (just mix it with a little bit of water). It also has anti-aging benefits, because as it exfoliates the skin, it helps with cell turnover.
So, are you ready to detoxify the bentonite way? 🙂 If you are, here’s…
What you’ll need
- A few small stalks of sage
- 2 tbsp of bentonite clay powder
(carried at most health food stores) - 1 tbsp of honey
- 1 tbsp of coconut oil
- Half a lemon
Sage (enough to fit in a small bowl)

2 tbsp of bentonite clay (available here and here)

1 tbsp of honey

1 tbsp of coconut oil

Half a lemon

This should make enough for one application. If the clay gets too thick, too quick, you can add a little more lemon before adding the oil.
Directions: Step by step
Remove the stems from the sage leaves, and grind the sage with a mortar and pestle until it’s fully ground.

Add your honey and sage…

Squeeze the lemon into the mash, and mix! You can also use lemon juice, which I sometimes do, but I think there’s something refreshing about using an actual lemon. Plus, you can use the other half of the lemon for something else. 🙂

Next, pour the coconut oil into the bowl…

Add the clay, and mix.

By this point, it should be firm and greenish gray.
That means it’s ready to go. Apply to your face, and let it sit for about 10 minutes before rinsing.
Voila! Enjoy your newly detoxified face! 🙂

Holy loveliness! Will be trying this out as soon as I can get my hands on the ingredients! Thank you so much ! Checked out your blog too 😀
This seems quite easy…need to try this out!
this seems very easy…will definitely try it out
Oooh I already use clay quite often but combining it with all those ingredients is genius! Thanks for the info! 🙂
I bet this would do wonders for my skin. Thank you for reminding me. I’ve had a bentonite mask before at a spa, and it made my skin look and feel amazing! I think Whole Foods carries the clay too.
ooo, sounds so refreshing! I’ve used Rhassoul clay and fuller’s earth before but I’ve never tried bentonite. I’ll have to check the health store down the street for it.
Where did you get the coconut oil?
This sounds really interesting, but I really, really love your bowls!
This mask sounds so interesting, never heard of it before. Let see if I can get some bentonite powder soon, Ill try this out 🙂
Love homemade clay masks! Is it possible to substitute coconut oil with other oils like olive oil or grapeseed?
Just tried this. I’m not sure if I got the consistency exactly right, because it was a little runny, but my skin felt great afterwards. I’ll definitely be trying this again soon 🙂
Don’t use metal bowls or utensils when mixing bentonite! It affects the composition and reduces its effectiveness.
Nadège, beautiful, beautiful pictures. I think they may be the highest quality I’ve seen in the guest posts.
Keep up the great posts!
Hi, i try it with just the clay and the water.but I love the ingredients you add.how often can you use it as a mask??
I have to agree with previous commenters: I LOVE your bowls and your pictures are exquisite.
This sounds like a fabulous recipe–what a stroke of genius to add honey and coconut oil with the clay! Thanks for sharing! =D
Karen i love clay masks it is also great to add green tea powder and later rinse it all with chamomile tea cheers 🙂
I tried your mask! My face feels very clean! Is it normal to have dried.skin after using the mask? Other than that Im very happy with results
I was wondering if you can use this stuff every night like a bedtime routine. If not any other mud mask recipes with bentonite clay that i can use.
Kari
Great recipe! I was looking for some additives to my normal bentonite + water mask. However, you should never use metal anything with bentonite – it neutralizes the negative charge and decreases the effectiveness of the clay.
Hey! Love the recipe, not sure if this was mentioned before but I noticed in the pictures that you used a metal butter knife to mix your ingredients.
From what else I’ve read in the interwebs this is a no-no that can reduce the effectiveness of the clay due to the metal reacting with the ions that make the clay so good at drawing out impurities.
Just thought I should mention it!
