As a beauty junkie, I realize that the last thing I “need” is another more limited edition palette…but does that ever stop anyone worth their weight in duochrome glitter shadow?? HELL NO.
Introducing Deck of Scarlet. They’re a new beauty palette delivery service — yup, you read that correctly. You sign up on their website, pay $29.95, and every other month, they send you a new limited edition palette designed by whomever is their current Artist in Chief (a.k.a popular YouTuber). The palettes are $29.95 each, and shipping is free.
If you’re ever just not into one of the palettes for whatever reason, you can skip that month, and you won’t be charged.
All of the makeup is cruelty-free, paraben-free and made in the USA.
The services only started in November, and their very first palette, Edition 00, is a collaboration with YouTuber Kelly Strack. It comes with three powder eyeshadows, a powder blush, a cream blush, two cream lip colors and two pencils (one eyeliner and one lip liner).
I haven’t worn this yet, but I’m really looking forward to it. The idea of a palette delivery service seems kind of awesome in a wacky way that probably only makeup lovers could fully appreciate.
From swatching the colors, the eyeshadows and powder blush feel softer than kitten paws… They’re so soft that when I went to swatch them, I almost accidentally took out a huge chunk out of the pan with my finger because, FYI, I’m the Hulk Smash of swatching!
The powder products, though, could stand to be a little finer. They remind me of NYX.
I appreciate that the cream lip products on the left have their own separate flap to keep them from corrupting the powder products on the right. That’s a nice touch, but I think it’s a little odd that in the section with the powders, there’s a huge pan of cream blush on the lower right, sooo you’ll still end up with powder in your cream anyway. Hmm…

Does this sound like something you’d be into? I haven’t jumped into the subscription beauty box game yet (What can I say? I have weird control issues.), but a palette delivery service seems kinda practical and very innovative in a beauty lover’s gimmicky way.

I am not into palettes, which is my luck. Otherwise I would probably have signed up already, because yes, a makeup delivery service of that kind sounds awesome. I am not a big fan of subscription boxes in general, simply because I dont want perfume samples and skincare not suited to my skin flooding my drawers.
I totally get that. I have control issues and would rather pick out stuff then have rand-do things arrive.
First impressions are pretty good. And I agree, smart move to separate the creams from the powders.
There’s still a cream in the powder section, but we’ll see how it goes.
Hmm, wait. So it’s $30/month but you get one palette every two months? Do you still pay every month? I mean does that mean the palettes $60 each? Or do you pay every other month (and not at all if you don’t like it?) Help! I don’t quite get it.
I’m not into YouTube, and if the powders aren’t super fine plus the ingredients are kinda meh this is probably a no for me anyway. Plus I’m not a collector, really. But I’d consider it if one of those things weren’t true!

The only time you pay is when a palette gets shipped out to you, so if there’s a palette that you don’t like, you don’t have to pay.
So, I swatched it, so I can kinda tell about the powders, but I haven’t worn it yet. Hopefully they apply more smoothly than I’m thinking they will.

I’m surprised by how much I like the colors in this palette — the only ones I really couldn’t use are the nude lip colors — so I’m tempted! I wish their web site was a more descriptive of who they are, how they were inspired to do this, etc. I like to try new things… and subscription boxes tend to come with a lot of skincare products that my sensitive skin can’t go anywhere near, so an all-makeup surprise service is intriguing.

I’m hoping that as they grow they’ll flesh out the website a little bit with more info. I do know that they were created by the people who do Scentbird, which is a perfume subscription service. I’m gonna wear the palette in the next day or so and will have more to say about the performance!

I think it’s an interesting concept. I like the flexibility of the service, because I wouldn’t want to pay $30 for a palette I don’t love.
