When I said I was on a ’90s lip liner kick last week, I WAS NOT KITTEN!
Way back in 1994, Baby Karen would have probably laughed at me for doing this matte lip because of how involved it is. It’s a rosy beige matte lip, but I used two different lip liners with the lipstick (MAC Whirl and Cork liners, because I was going for a slight gradient effect with MAC Honey Love Lipstick ), and I carefully and subtly overdrew the half of my lip that’s slightly thinner by bracing my elbow on a table.
I also cleaned up the edges with a lip brush loaded with concealer. Back in the day, I used to be able to draw lips just like this while riding on a bumpy bus and balancing a bag filled with chemistry texts on my lap. Pretty sure I was half asleep while doing it, too, HAHAHA! Ah, youth… You so crazy!
Anywho, I automatically associate ’90s lips with classic MAC lipsticks and liner, so (naturally) I rolled with old-school MAC matte shades for the smokey eyes — Wedge, Omega, Carbon and Brun eyeshadows — and, of course, Smolder eyeliner, an old standby.
Ten years ago I used to feel like this type of makeup was so dated because of the unblended liner and the lack of shimmer, but now I kinda love it! I think there’s something timeless and elegant about it.

A different kind of Halloween, and Coycoy’s first horse adventure
It was definitely a Halloween for the books. Oh, 2020, you continue to surprise me!
We spent the bulk of our Halloween day at the Pronzini Farms Pumpkin Patch in Petaluma, which, by the way, highly recommended. We’re going back next year for sure.
There were so many things to do, not just for kids of all ages, but for all types of kids. There were the traditional items for play you’d expect at a pumpkin patch, like hay pyramids, mazes and pedal cars, but there were also things like bingo, a train ride and a scavenger hunt for kids who preferred less physical activities.
Connor spent most of her time at the petting zoo connecting with a gentle brown horse named “Boogie,” and she surprised both me and El Hub by asking if she could go on a pony ride with him.
Over the past few months we’ve noticed that it takes her a while to warm up to doing something different and new, so I was thrilled to see her happily jump into the saddle to take a few turns with him. When she finished her ride I asked her how it went, and she said, “Mama, my heart was so happy when I was riding my horse.” I almost turned into a blubbering mess right then and there.

I love Princess Connor Claire on the horse, no side-saddling it for her like a boss. She looks so comfortable and natural.

My friend had invited me to do something for Halloween, but the virus is pretty bad in Michigan, so I passed. Also, my husband is having surgery on Monday so I’m just really trying to minimize exposure. I took Hettie on a walk instead – she got some compliments on her light up harness and leash from trick or treaters. Most folks had their candy just in a bowl on the porch to minimize exposure.
I hope Zack’s surgery goes smoothly. If we were neighbors I’d bring you a casserole! Will you be able to go with him to the hospital?

OMG, I love it. Connor and the horse, I mean. HAHA! The makeup is lovely, too, and you know I’m always a fan of 90s lips. 🙂 I hope you’ll be able to get more horsey time for Connor. I wanted my kids to learn to ride, learn to play an instrument, learn to swim and learn to ice skate. Some were my favorites when I was young and some I wished I’d learned to do (better!) before becoming an adult. I’ve heard that people who don’t live around lakes or oceans don’t prioritize learning to swim but I think it’s a great survival skill. And riding will definitely be handy if we have that zombie apocalypse. HAHA! PS I loved the Black Stallion books when I was a kid. And don’t get me started on Black Beauty (lots of ugly crying there).

Love Connor’s princess dress too! Half of me misses Dear Daughter getting dressed up for Halloween and the other half of me is happy I don’t have to sew any more complicated costume ideas.
I have a video of her “riding” and all you can see is this puff of purple and pink tulle going round and round! LOL I’ve checked nearby places for her to try some lessons but she has to be 5 before she starts. It’s also very pricey, yikes!
Yeah, most places require kids to be 5 before they start riding lessons. It has to do with when most kids start listening and following directions well. It’s a safety thing. Because horses are tall, weigh roughly 1,000 pounds (and up) and wear metal shoes. And yeah, super pricey. I think Dear Husband was secretly relieved when Lucy crossed the rainbow bridge, because it meant there was an end in sight to the monthly horse bills. Dear Daughter still rides once a week and pays for her own lessons. She even does some catch riding when other people need their horses to be ridden but don’t have time or can’t for some reason.
As expensive as it was, it taught my daughter a lot. How to channel her emotions in a positive way. How to be responsible for another creature, bigger and more complicated than a cat. How to prioritize her time with school work and lessons and riding and showing.
