So…what is the Monday Poll?
Excellent question! It isn’t, contrary to its name, an actual poll, like with little clicky buttons. It’s just a list of five more or less random questions I’ve been posting on this blog every Monday morning for the past quadrillion years (since 2007). I love reading your answers, and it helps me get my week off to a good start. ?
1. Would you rather be a ninja or a pirate?
Ninja! They wear all black (a good color for me) and usually aren’t on a boat (I get seasick easily). And, generally, they seem to be less stinky than pirates?! I dunno if any of this is true, but in my mind it is. LOL!
2. Camping or glamping?
Camping if someone else sets up and breaks down the campsite. Glamping if I have to be the adult and do it, ha!
3. What lipstick were you really into when you first started wearing makeup?
My first “fancy lady” lipstick was a very light creamy magenta by Clinique — very late ’80s! I loooovede seeing that silver case in my hand when it was time to touch up. I was also really into Revlon lipsticks back then too.
4. How often do you stay up past 3 a.m.?
I’m often up during the witching hour, but it’s never on purpose. Anybody want some insomnia? I’ll give it to you for free!
5. A silly fear you have?
I’m irrationally afraid of earthworms. Especially the long ones.
6. What’s the best room in the house?
I love my living room in the afternoon; it’s comfortable and has the best light.
7. What part of doing makeup are you best at?
I think I’m pretty good at getting base makeup to look like skin. Also, once upon a time, smokey eyes used to be my jam!
8. What cartoons did you watch when you were a kid?
Scooby Doo was always on at the babysitter’s house. I also remember He-Man and She-Ra being a big deal.
9. Do you text or call more?
I text more, even though I’m the world’s slowest texter!

P.P.S. Hello and happy Monday, my beautiful friend! How goes it on your end? I’m doing alright today. The sun’s out, I’m drinking coffee right now… Overall, I’m feeling optimistic about the week ahead.
I’m shocked to hear myself say this out loud, but yesterday I *did something* over the weekend. I know, what even is going out anymore?
Our fam-bam went to SF to see the Immersive Van Gogh Exhibit. Have you heard of it?
It’s kind of like a Van Gogh painting brought to life. You stand in this huge room (in socially distanced circles that are projected on the floor) as some of Van Gogh’s most famous paintings are projected onto the walls with music playing in the background. As you’re looking at the paintings, parts of them actually move and flow with the music, so you feel like you’re standing in the middle of a living, breathing work of art. IT WAS SO COOL. My favorite part was the famous Irises painting; it started with what looked like dirt being projected on the walls, then we saw roots elongating and growing, then leaves shooting upwards and out of the roots, and then the flowers eventually budding and blooming. It was an explosion of color! I even got a little teary because I was so overwhelmed with how beautiful it was.
If you ever get the chance to go, I highly recommend it.
1. Would you rather be a ninja or a pirate? Pirate because I like being out on boats but I would shower and stuff so I guess I’d be a fancy pirate
2. Camping or glamping? Glamping although the first vacation with the hubby was camping in a tent in the Blue Ridge Mountains
3. What lipstick were you really into when you first started wearing makeup? Never that into lipstick so nothing comes to mind
4. How often do you stay up past 3 a.m.? Never – I can barely make it to 11 pm
5. A silly fear you have? I was afraid of my gas stove I. Our first house. Always afraid I would leave it on and burn the house down. BTW – never did
6. What’s the best room in the house? My kitchen/family room but the living room is a close second
7. What part of doing makeup are you best at? Mascara – I’m a mascara junkie
8. What cartoons did you watch when you were a kid? Bugs bunny & looney tunes. My favorite was Marvin the Martian
9. Do you text or call more? Text. I hate talking on the phone
You’re not alone with the gas stove fear, Melissa! I’m a little freaked by mine too (although I love to cook with it).
I was not a fan of the gas cooking. Either off or jet engine. No in between & a pain to clean. Now I have a glass top electric that I love! Although it blew out after a power outage/surge on Christmas and it took 3 months to get a new one
Seriously a pain to clean. Our stove is black, too, which shows every tiny little crumb.
How did you live for three months without a stove? I bet you did a lot of creative microwave cooking.
I don’t have a microwave. We bought a plug in induction burner and I use my oven a lot. I was so over it but the new cooktop is awesome so all is good
That’s great that you’re loving your new stove and how easy it is to clean! I honestly didn’t understand how hard it was to clean a gas stove until I got one. I love it for the control of the heat but it is SUCH a pain.
I looooove my oven, by the way. Give me a dish I can just shove in there any day of the week, hahaha.

3. What lipstick were you really into when you first started wearing makeup? Revlon had a very pretty pinky rose shade, but I forget the name. “Dusty Rose” or something.
4. How often do you stay up past 3 a.m.? I’m usually up going to the bathroom at that time, lol.
5. A silly fear you have? Bugs- as long as they stay away and leave me alone, I’m good.
6. What’s the best room in the house? Living Room.
7. What part of doing makeup are you best at? I’m not perfect, but I’m stepping up my concealer game!
8. What cartoons did you watch when you were a kid? Animaniacs, Looney Tunes, Tiny Tunes, Nickelodeon (Doug, Rugrats, etc.), Recess, etc.

I’ve seen a similar immersive Van Gogh Exibition last year in Zurich, Switzerland, just a couple of days before the pandemic hit our country. Right now there’s the Monet version in my home town Lucerne. Loved both of them!
What was your favorite part about the Van Gogh exhibit?

I was just stunned to feel like you’re sitting inside these huge pictures, all around you the colors move, and the music playing… It felt like I was a part of these pieces of art. I love visiting art museums, so I’ve seen a lot of Van Goghs (and Monets) original work, but these enormous moving versions were something completely different.
I know! It really did feel like being in the middle of a painting. We sat through two of the shows. I could’ve stayed there for even longer but the hubs started getting antsy. I would love to go again!
1. Would you rather be a ninja or a pirate? Ninja. I don’t like large bodies of water and the thought of stealing from others to make a living doesn’t sit well with me.
2. Camping or glamping? Neither. I’m a city girl through and through. If there isn’t turn down service and a chocolate on my pillow it’s camping to me.
3. What lipstick were you really into when you first started wearing makeup? Uhm that was like 45 years ago. I can’t remember. Probably something from the drugstore like a Bonnie Belle lip smacker.
4. How often do you stay up past 3 a.m.? I don’t often stay up that late, but quite often I wake up between 3 and 4 a.m. I hate it.
5. A silly fear you have? Lighting the propane grill out back, slipping and losing a finger on the table saw, or worse wood getting jammed and kicking back and knocking me out. Falling off of horses. Going out in public when it’s crowded. Got more time?
6. What’s the best room in the house? Kitchen/family room. Food and TV and books.
7. What part of doing makeup are you best at? Mascara and lipstick.
8. What cartoons did you watch when you were a kid? Whatever was on on Sunday nights on The Wonderful World of Disney. Mom didn’t let us watch a lot of TV growing up.
9. Do you text or call more? Text. When Dear Daughter went away to college she had 5 minutes in between each class. She’d sometimes text me. I got pretty fast at texting her then and I haven’t stopped.
That’s sweet that your daughter would text you between class. I hope Connor does the same when she’s that age!
Did she and your hubs leave for NY?
To be honest she doesn’t text me as much now that she’s older. Sigh. Maybe it will change again once she starts classes in NY.
They left for NY and should be arriving there today.

Hope that they had a fun and memorable trip together. How is Nibbler settling in?
Well considering they could have been in NYC four days ago, I’d say they had a great trip. They spent three days hiking in different national parks in Utah, then high tailed it to Chicago and they spent most of the day in The Chicago Art Institute. I am so freaking jealous it’s not even funny. The regular collection there is amazing and they had special exhibitions of Monet and of Bisa Butler’s art.
Nibbler is doing well. She mostly ignores me unless I’m in the bathroom. Then she’s like a toddler scratching and clawing at the door and if she gets in she’ll be rubbing my legs and head butting me. She’s gotten in my lap, purring once.
Utah is beautiful. I visited Bryce canyon when I was in my 20s and loved all of the colors and shapes and the wide open space.

Isn’t it funny how cats go nuts when you go into the bathroom? Rosie is the same way first thing in the morning. She NEEDS me to know that she’s been waiting all night to talk to me, so she has to be in there to update me on what’s been going on, LOL.
