Hi, friend. Before we get into today’s Beauty Q&A, I just wanted to say happy Friday, and TGIF. I’ve been quiet because I’ve had to feel some feelings. The world is a scary place, and MBB is usually my safe haven, so when I sit down at my keyboard in the mornings, I try to do it with a warm heart. Some days are so much harder than others, though, especially when I realize how everything feels so much more fragile than it did when I was a child.
I hope that wherever you are today, you and your family are feeling steady, loved and safe. Those things aren’t guaranteed for any of us, it seems, so any day you have them in your life is a gift.
DEEP BREATH. I think I’m ready for a little lighthearted chat about beauty; how about you? I need a momentary distraction.
As you know, summer is just around the corner. We got a preview a couple days ago in the Bay Area with temperatures in the 90s. I’m so not ready to be covered in sweat every time I leave the house, ugh.

At least the heat is a dry heat, though! It does make a difference. Humidity takes the challenge to the next level, for sure.
So, some summer beauty concerns…
- Makeup melting off in the heat! Although I don’t wear as much as I used to, I don’t appreciate my liner smearing all over the place.
- Hair challenges. I’m a little self conscious of the spots on my hairline that’ve receded a bit, so I’ve been trying to figure out how to disguise them and still keep my hair off my neck. Instead of doing high buns and ponytails, lately I’ve been doing more low buns and french twists because I can swoop the front pieces over those spots.
- Sweating like a mofo. OH gosh, so hot, so sweaty, all the time! The worst spots for me are my armpits (they’ve been next level lately), the backs of my knees and between my thighs.
- Keeping up with sun protection. I’m trying to be diligent about protecting my skin from the sun! I’m forever reapplying sunscreen, it seems.
How about you? What are your biggest summer beauty concerns?
Your friendly neighborhood beauty addict,
Karen

As always, thanks for your beauty blog. These last few days have been heart wrenching and I feel like trivial things like lip color just don’t feel urgent. I can’t tell you how many times I have hugged my son nd he’s 21! I’m happy he’s home for the summer and hope to G-d he stays safe.
Yes, summer is around the corner and I’m slopping on the sunscreen. Be well and stay safe.
You too, Jane. Big hugs.
Hugs to you, it’s been such a scary week, I can’t imagine what it’s like as a parent.
As a gingery person, sun protection is a big one. I walk my dog most days and I do sunscreen and often a hat. We have a vacation involving multiple amusement parks planned for July (not my top choice, I hate roller coasters) and I’ll probably bring a parasol because at a certain point I max out my sunscreen, even with reapplication.
I’m also a really sweaty person and I have rosacea. My hair will probably be wild, thank goodness for hair clips.
I’m having some pretty major jaw surgery mid-July so at that point beauty won’t be my top concern LOL! I’ll be wearing a splint 24/7 for two months to protect my jaw.
Hi Chelsea,
Have you seen the sun protection clothing by Athleta? I have a long-sleeve shirt and a jacket with a hood, and love them both!
I’ll check it out!
My dad has had several skin cancers removed (non-melanoma, thank goodness) so I really try to be on top of it. He had laser done on his lip this year so I’m trying to be good about SPF lip balm. His biological father died of metastatic melanoma and two of my mom’s sisters have had melanoma too.
No beauty concerns summer time. Just want sunshine and get tanned.
So far non is happening, the weather sucks this year.
I want sunshine too, but I don’t want to be so darn sweaty, LOL! I don’t love the heat as much as I used to. Give me cooler weather any day.
Cool is perfect as long there is sunshine.
My concerns for summer are pretty much the same as they are year round. Thinning hair and black heads while having dry skin.
Maine gets icky–if we’re lucky–during July and August–if not, then we don’t have a traditional summer, at least not here on the coast.
Hello, my friend!! I love that pic – Hearst Castle, right? Next year, Karen – I swear! 🙂 I’m with you 100% on the pits lately. And it hasn’t even been much over 80 here. I blame age. HAHA! Like you, I have to remember to be diligent about sunscreen. For me, it’s my jawline/neck and forearms, or I end up looking like a Dalmatian. Aside from that, I’d say bugs. It’s been crazy with biting insects this year. It’s brutal, even with a breeze. But it’s certainly nice to have some sun and warm weather, so I won’t complain TOO much.
I feel your concern about life right now. I think recent events have shocked us all and I’m not even in the U.S.
My pet hates are humid weather and the sweat it creates! The UK is either cold and damp or hot and damp…My worst sweating areas are armpits (of course) and my face – either side of my nose and my top lip. I feel like nobody needs to see my armpits but my face is hard to conceal…
Some beauty concerns:
1. Makeup looking too powdery in the sun
2. Crusty feet – barely a week after a pedicure
3. Waxing and shaving logistics and planning outfits accordingly (nothing new here)
Getting my makeup right in the summer sun is the big one I guess since I’m still learning the art.
On a different note: Take care and stay well. It’ll be okay. (THIS TOO SHALL PASS) 🌤
My number one summer concern is always sun protection. I think I’m somewhere between 0-2 on the Fitzpatrick Scale. Ugh.
I’m forever searching for an effective sun hat with a large brim that doesn’t make me look like a big, OLD, dork and doesn’t block too much of my vision. Because if I can’t see where I’m going I’m liable to break a bone or tear a ligament or something. Lol.
And staying cool and dry. Man it was only in the mid-80s for Dear Daughter’s graduation, but the humidity was 90% and I’m telling ya, I was sweating like crazy. Sigh.
I keep praying this world gets a little less crazy a tiny bit saner. It doesn’t seem to be working yet.
Have a safe, happy weekend.
I’m just going to jump in here with under-boob sweat. The worst!
Sun damage – getting better about sunscreen, but my upper chest still gets some damage every year
Shaving logistics – I don’t shave often in the “off-season” (dry skin, keratosis pilaris all over, and laziness) but I try to keep up with things in the summertime
For me, being redhead, year round sun is an issue but even more in the summer. With eczema even the “gentle sunscreens can’t be used on my face and neck. I have good luck with the Badger babies non chemical sunscreen.
Dryness – you think with the sweating my skin wouldn’t be dry but no. I add a lighter weight face serum than I use in winter. Right now using Mahalo Hawaiian Hydration which is really light and smells so nice or a Moringa Oil from
Maruyama Jones Farm in Hawaii. Both help with eczema flares I get on my neck.
Lastly, frizzy hair. My hair is wavy and the heat and humidity make it look like my head was attacked by squirrels. I use dpHUE ACV hair masque twice a week after my shampoo bar and that helps a lot.
Yeah. I turned off the TV, the phone and just cried for a while. The world is very unfair (I’ve had my fair share of minor experiences) but it really drives home how incredibly lucky I actually am and that I didn’t have a traumatic child hood. Mine was just incredibly lonely.
Summer concerns are the melting makeup (I apply less and less every year, but it’s still a thing) and the outfit and shaving schedule.
Since the weather has changed my skin is doing this annoying thing where it’s incredibly oily yet looks so dull 🙄 can’t wait for that to pass. I’ll invest in a floppy hat and sunglasses this summer as sunscreen makes my skin angry and I don’t like testing lots of products.
