So…what is the Monday Poll?
Excellent question! It isn’t, contrary to its name, an actual poll, like with little clicky buttons. It’s just a list of more or less random questions I’ve been posting on this blog every Monday morning for the past quadrillion years (since 2007).
1. Colors that make you happy?
Mint green, pale yellow, light lavender – pastels bring me so much joy!
2. Last beauty product you received as a gift?
My friend Kelly gave me a tube of Saint Jane Lip Gloss that I’m pretty stoked about.
3. Summer or fall makeup?
This is hard for me. I love summer makeup because it’s so easy and breezy, but I appreciate the artistry of a full-on fall face beat. Hmm. Let’s go with summer makeup because it’s basically the style I’ve been wearing for the last two years.
4. Grapefruit juice: yum or yuck?
YUM!
5. Sweatshirt or cardigan?
An extra soft sweatshirt with a hood and pockets, please. I’m all about cozy comfort these days!
6. Worst car you’ve ever driven?
El Hub and I once got talked into renting a Ford Mustang convertible when we visited Hawaii years ago. It was the most uncomfortable car I’ve ever been in, both as a passenger and as a driver. This was in the early 2000s, so I have no idea how the car is now, but back then, I couldn’t make sense of the console because everything felt like it was in the wrong place. The seats were uncomfortable, and riding around with the wind in my hair wasn’t as fun as I thought it would be; it was noisy and messed up my mane!
7. Classic or trendy?
Trendy back in the day, more classic now.
8. Whatcha doing today?
Well, it’s the Fourth of July so I feel like I should be doing something eventful, but El Hub is working and the weather’s overcast and cool. If it clears up later, Connor and I will probably go for a short hike, and then I’ll play with her in the front yard for a bit. It hit me recently that she won’t be a little kid for much longer, and so I have to get in as much time doing simple things together, like sidewalk chalk, as much as I can.
9. Something you want to accomplish this week?
I need to research window blinds and drapes. Honestly, like most things I’m finding that are related to home furnishings, blinds and drapes are surprisingly complicated. I never thought I’d fall into a rabbit hole related to blinds, but here we are, LOL!

P.P.S. Good morning, friend. It’s a long weekend here in the U.S. because of the Fourth of July. I hope you get the chance to do something relaxing and fun today. 🤗

2. Last beauty product you received as a gift? My husband got me the Honua Ritual product collection with my favorite “Youth Serum”.

6. Worst car you’ve ever driven? Rental – Chrysler PT Cruiser. So underpowered just merging was scary. On the plus side, it was so underpowered I knew if the brakes totally failed, I could just turn on the A.C. and it would coast to a stop.

8. Whatcha doing today? Waiting with a book for the much-needed rain to blow through.

Oh man my current VW is such a pain in the ass but I’ll drive it until it dies.

It’s a balance. I dunno, I don’t think my style is either, I just wear what I like.

We’re on our last day at King’s Dominion in Doswell VA, we head to Busch Gardens for a day tomorrow.
9. Something you want to accomplish this week
Make buckwheat crepes! I have jaw surgery on July 15th, and I only get soft food for 2 months, so I want to eat the things I like beforehand.
Oooh! I want to learn how to make buckwheat crepes!

I did a study abroad in Brittany in undergrad and the recipe is from my host mom, it’s the best.

I can read French recipes! That’s the extent of my French knowledge. It’s speaking I have a hard time with!
1. Colors that make you happy? All the blues, all the purples, blue based red and black. Yes, black makes me happy.
2. Last beauty product you received as a gift? About 20 years ago when Dear Daughter was 9ish, she got Dear Husband to take her to a MAC counter and she picked out some shadows and an empty four pan palette as a Christmas gift for me.
3. Summer or fall makeup? Fall. Unless I’m heading into The City on a foggy day, I hate wearing makeup in the heat.
4. Grapefruit juice: yum or yuck? Neither yum nor yuck. Somewhere in between.
5. Sweatshirt or cardigan? Cardigan. Preferably made of ca$hmere.
6. Worst car you’ve ever driven? In college my boyfriend and I had an early 70’s Honda Civic with over 250,000 miles on it and a burnt out starter. One of had to push the car or roll it down a hill and pop the clutch to get it started.
7. Classic or trendy? Before Dear Daughter trendy. Now classic.
8. Whatcha doing today? Went for a long walk, bought a book at local bookstore. Now headed out to buy produce and chicken to make Japanese Corn Rice and Yakitori for dinner.
9. Something you want to accomplish this week? Get some thin Moleskin notebooks to stuff into my purse. Try to make a habit of sketching or drawing something at least once a day. Order a new pillow and comforter for Dear Daughter’s bed because she’s dropping in for a weekend after a business trip to SoCal, before she flies back to DC.

I got some fun bath products as part of a Secret Santa gift exchange.

Summer. I love the light, easy looks.

Yum-ish? My husband uses white grapefruit juice in Tiki cocktails.

Cardigan. I go between warm and cold and a cardi is easier to layer.

Not a fan of driving my husband’s truck. It’s too big and difficult to park.

Going to a friend’s house to watch fireworks. They have an awesome backyard along a pond and they have a great view of the local fireworks show.

Get some packing done! We’re going on our first vacation in a couple of years and I feel like I’m not prepared.

1. Colors that make you happy?
Terra cotta or brick red, yellow—all hues, Galt blue (intense light blue), sea green, lime or apple green. All colors in their element! I think in colors and see people, emotions, and things in terms of color. Interestingly, reds were my favorite colors until I became pregnant. Then it switched to blues. Now I love both.
2. Last beauty product you received as a gift?
For Mother’s Day, my family gifted me with a January Labs kit. It’s quite good.
3. Summer or fall makeup?
I’ll go short term and say Summer! But ask me again in three months.
4. Grapefruit juice: yum or yuck?
Yum!!! But it’s super sugary, so I try not to drink a bucket, and save it for a treat.
5. Sweatshirt or cardigan?
Neither really—but if I must choose, then broken in sweatshirt.
6. Worst car you’ve ever driven?
Wow interesting question. My parents’ 1983 Buick Skylark would be a close contender. I believe a door fell off. That was the heyday of poor quality control in Detroit. Fortunately, American cars have improved since then!

A mixture of classic and modern.
8. Whatcha doing today?
Enjoying a rare day to myself while my family is cavorting about in the hot sun on scooters and bikes in the city! I made them all put on the Avene sunscreen you recommended. All three of your picks—Avene, Black Girl Sunscreen, and Block Star—are seriously incredible. Thank you!!
9. Something you want to accomplish this week?
Eat several pieces of red, white, and blue pie (cherries, apples, blueberries). With ice cream.

I usually respond to interesting color combinations, like pink and orange, pink and red, gray and pink…so many.

One of those Tom Ford little lipsticks, the lips and boys business. It’s ok, I like the size because I never finish a tube of lipstick but the quality is mediocre.

Living in Northern California means not having to choose, lol.

Yum, especially with mezcal and honey.

I was once given a pt cruiser as a rental, it was horrible. It looked dumb, had terrible visibility, and had no power when accelerating.

Went to see the Alice Neel show at the de young museum this morning, which was really great. Had a little walk through golden gate park, got some Thai food, came home and made frozen watermelon margaritas.

I’d like to get through my workweek with detachment and very little stress.

Someone was bound to mention a Pinto! You get the prize, Stephanie!! I grew up in Detroit, and they had a reputation as the worst cars ever. But the style has turned out to be mad mod. A few years ago I worked on a street where someone had a perfectly maintained vintage Pinto. It was simultaneously hilarious, scary, and awe-inspiring.

Hm, tough one. Maybe the used Toyota Camry that started stalling during left turns? That got scary, fast.

Took a 6+ hour train ride to visit my parents. Worth it for the hugs!

Help my folks find a new clothes dryer. Theirs apparently just went kaput. Other than that, tons of chores that old people really can’t, or shouldn’t, be doing!

Honestly, I love all colours. It just depends on where. Some colours like neutrals and pinks, I love to wear as clothes. Bright reds and pinks as nail polish/lipstick/hand bags. Blues and greens just to look at (outside/lake)

I have no idea. I’ve rarely received beauty as a gift.
3. Summer or fall makeup? Fall. Actually I’m already looking into the perfect brown red lipstick to pick up before then. I’m thinking Chanel rouge allure ink experimente. It gives me Mac Dubonnet vibes as I used to love that one and can no longer wear it.
