It’s clear from the answers to question nine in yesterday’s Monday poll that as a collective group we are mad about mascara!
Did you think you were alone in your mascara obsession? Guess what? You’re not!
As much as I love mascara, I do have to say ever since I quit using lash serum (it was around this time last year), mascara needs to work that much harder. Ugh! When I was consistently using lash serum, my lashes were long, thick, lush, curled easily and rarely fell out. I could use any mascara, and my lashes would look amazing. Now that I’m back to my baseline lashes, every mascara falls short.
I’m on the hunt for a new one, again!
In the comments yesterday, Megan mentioned the new Tower 28 mascara, which I’ve been wanting to try ever since I saw makeup artist Katie Jane Hughes use it on Instagram. I have yet to find an –“air quotes” — clean mascara that I’ve liked, though, so if and when I pick it up at Sephora, I’m gonna definitely keep my receipt just in case.
What mascara are you using at the moment?
All summer long I bounced back and forth between a couple of old faves from MAC, and I just recently started a new tube from a brand called Araceli. They’re a small, cruelty-free line out of Southern California, and the packaging has a pretty butterfly on the side of the tube. It’s good at thickening and lengthening, but I could use with more curl hold, so it’s not the one to rule them all.

One tube of Araceli mascara is $19, and side note, when did mascara get so dang expensive?
Your friendly neighborhood beauty addict,
Karen

Have you ever tried Thrive Mascara? I really like it. There are two types: tubing and regular water resistant. I can’t do waterproof, because I wear contacts and the removal bothers me too much. I love the tubing mascara.
I haven’t! I’ve used both tubing and water-resistant formulas, but Thrive as a brand is new to me. I see their ads all the time though! Is it a mascara that has a dramatic effect?
It’s pretty good I think. Although I don’t buy black anymore (I get either brown or navy). I get good length and curl and no flaking.
Ugh, I can’t deal with flaking or smudging. Do you like anything else from the line?
Happy Tuesday, by the way!
I love their eyeliner and eyeshadow stick and I just placed an order for the triple threat color stick (for lips, cheeks, eyes) so I’ll let you know how it is. Happy Tuesday to you too!
Ooh, thank you! I will see what I can put in my cart. LOL!
I love mascara! My latest purchase was MacStack which I’m really not loving. It dries too crispy and hard to layer additional coats on. It does lay quite a bit down, but for me anyway, it clumps my lashes together. And its got these bristles at the end of the applicator for small lashes I guess (?) but I’ve ended up poking them in my eye on more than one occasion – ouch!
My fav for years has been Better Than Sex (Too Faced) and I think I need to go back to it, but I love trying new ones!
I’m still using Revitalash – been using it 5+ years now. I think it’s safe to say I’m addicted. 🙂
Poking an eye with your wand is NEVER fun!
I’ve heard Revitalash is good… If I ever get back on the lash serum train, I might try it. One of the reasons why I quit doing it is because once you’re on that train, you are on it, you know?
I love mascara and wear it almost everyday…but I do not have a “favorite” anymore. I have used some from MAC, Tarte, Toofaced, and Milani lately. Today I’m wearing Covergirl Lashblast in the orange tube. Is it just me…or do they all dry up in the tube faster than past years? Across all brands and price ranges?
Even though mascara is my most “needed” makeup item…I refuse to splurge. It must be $20 or under. I usually buy during sales to try different ones. I just don’t feel like a tube lasts long enough to justify spending more.
Has anyone tried the Honest Beauty mascara? That’s the one I would like to try next☺.
I’ve noticed that I can’t stretch out my mascara as much as I used to. I wouldn’t be surprised if having the tubes dry out faster was on purpose. Sigh.
As for the Honest Beauty Mascara, I’ve tried it! If you like lashes that look natural, it’s OK.
RE: Tower 28. I spent a little more time on my makeup this morning and found I was able to build it up for some more oomph. It’s versatile in that you can keep it natural with 1 or 2 coats or build up more, which is nice. Length and volume are most important to me in a mascara, along with no clumping, flaking or smearing. I wore it yesterday on a 45 minute walk in 80+ degrees and it held up beautifully. No problem to remove either.
There’s your very important mascara update for the day! 🙂
Oooh, that sounds promising! I love a buildable lash. Thank you for keeping us all in the loop!
Right now I don’t have a favorite mascara because all my favorites seem to have been discontinued. MAC Haute & Naughty, MAC False Lashes, Clinique Naturally Glossy. I like a deep brown mascara, I find black too harsh and contrasty on my fair skin and gray haired self.
Right now I’m rotating through Diorshow Iconic Overcurl, regular Diorshow(comes in brown, yeah!!), YSL Volume Effet Faux Cils, Urban Decay Perversion and Lancome Dèfinicils (in deep brown).
I tried the Clinique tubing mascara but it broke apart and flaked and ended up in my eyes. I also found it difficult to remove. I also tried the new Chanel Allure Mascara. It was a little wet and the brush didn’t have enough bristles to separate all my lashes so it took a lot of post application combing to get the fluttery lashes I like. After a few hours it flaked into my eyes and left me looking like a raccoon.
I use the Ulta Beauty Twisted Volume Mascara. It is only $10.50, and you turn the dial on the tube to increase the thickness and volume, and the highest setting also curls. It is pretty good, and you cannot beat the price. It is the one in the bright metallic pink tube. I am pretty sure Ulta brand is cruelty free, but not sure how “clean” it is.
I have sensitive eyes and an allergy to an ingredient that’s super common in personal care products (tocopherol and tocopheryl acetate, a form of Vitamin E. Makes me itchy in low amounts, gives eczema in large amounts). I’m currently using L’Oreal Double Extend Beauty Tubes, a tubing mascara that has a primer end and a mascara end. It doesn’t irritate my eyes at all and looks good enough – pretty good length.
Even without an eye cream, most mascaras smear on me. Or they flake. Lancome Dèfinicils has been a staple and I just tried Vapour Mesmerize which I like so far. It doesn’t have a dramatic look but adds a bit of length and some nice color and definition without clumps. I had just a few flakes at the end of the workday but 95% of the mascara stayed where it should. I would repurchase.
I still haven’t found the mascara I am entirely happy with. Right now I use a L’Oreal one that is good at volume and length, but brings every bit of curl down in seconds, so…
