The first time I gave it a try, it took me a good five minutes in front of the mirror to build up the courage to raise Sephora’s Professional Platinum Lash & Eyebrow Comb ($10) to my eyes.
I kept imagining myself scratching an eyeball with its pointy metal teeth. Compared to the cheap plastic drugstore lash combs I’ve always used, this metal monster looked downright frightening!
But after breaking three of the plastic ones so far this year, I was fed up and ready to try something new.
Having heard nothing but good things about metal lash combs, I took a few deep breaths, made the sign of the cross and went for it.
“Go towards the light, Carol Anne! Towards the light!!”
As luck would have it, all my fears were for naught. Sephora’s metal monster isn’t frightening at all.
Maybe it’s the extra length or how skinny the teeth are, but it seems to work much better than the $2 plastic combs I’m used to, separating stuck-together lashes and smoothing mascara clumps with ease.
The teeth grab and comb through even my shortest, stubbiest lashes.
And the brow brush end works equally well. Its coarse, dense bristles (made from boars hair) feel surprisingly stiff.
It’s able to mellow overly darkened brows, like when I accidentally apply too much brow powder, blending them out with just a few swipes.
At $10, it’s more than I used to pay for drugstore brow and lash combs (the one I bought from Studio Basics was $2), but I think it’s worth the extra cost.
It feels sturdy, like a real tool, and I get the sense it’s not going to break in a month. I also like that it comes with a plastic pouch that snaps shut for safe transport in my makeup bag. 🙂

I LOVE metal eyelash brushes. They just do the job so much better than plastic ones. These ones do look kind of scary though, as the tips are sharpened. The ones I use have more blunt tips so I don’t have to worry about accidentally stabbing myself.

I actually tried this one and returned it because it wasn’t separating well enough for me. Tweezerman’s fold up gold one works better for me. Its handy that this one has the brow brush though!

I have the Tweezerman folding one and I LOVE it. I think it costs less too (~$7 at Ulta?). Also – tip for cleaning since it took me 6+ months to figure this out – use an old toothbrush! Reaaaaally helps get the crusted on mascara off. =)

OH MY that actually is really scary! I have short stubby lashes so I’d have to get really close to my eye, and sometimes I do end up poking my eye by accident with my blunt plastic lash comb. But the one I have barely does any separating, so I’m tempted to take the plunge with this one. The brow brush looks awesome though! The one I have, again, is cheap and doesn’t do a good enough job for my taste.

Sonia Kashuk has a black squiggly brow groomer/lash comb that looks just like this…I personally don’t like the double function brush like this because I never use the brow groomer side (and I am also afraid that it will poke my eyes…)
Anyway, I have a Shiseido lash comb that’s makes of a resilient plastic (it’s flexible/less crisp so it doesn’t break easily) and it only costs 300 yens (3 bucks) and the best part is that it’s slightly angled at the tip(like 170 degrees instead of being completely straight) so I don’t have to raise my elbow to comb my lashes…It’s super handy and quite space conserving. (I don’t think they have it at the counter here in US since it’s too cheap.)
I never really felt the need for one of these, but I can see how it would come in handy. I’m going to put it on my sephora wish list. I have a few sephora brushes and it amazes me how good they are. The platinium collection, that is.
Hahahaha, I broke my EcoTools one (that’s two for this year!). I still use the brow side but have found a much better alternative–a clean mascara wand. My Almay doesn’t usually clump, but when it does I use the old applicator that I cleaned from my chucked mascara bottle. It’s free (well, relatively).
Works every single time on my uber long (and almost fully grown, hurray!) lashes.
I’m attempting to get my ass in gear and work on an essay, of the three I have. :cries: I hate Midterms. And Zena can’t even comfort me because she’s SLEEPING!!! I need my doggy!
i really really like lash combs because i need them to sepearte any clumping but i poke my eyes 4/10 times i use the darn comb.
sooo maybe i’ll use it 4 times then can it… hahhaha

I’ve never actually used lash combs—I prefer to use those disposable mascara wands that you use to sample mascara. I just twirl the spoolie wand through my lashes after applying mascara, and it’s perfect for declumping! I’m glad you like this, and now I’m wondering if the brush will work better than the spoolie at combing through brows…
I have to say I’ve never used Lash & Eyebrows combs cause I didn’t felt the need for it. My eyebrows are not so thick and they’ve never given me troubles 🙂

How did you break so many combs? I have a MAC 206, this random brush and a MAC 205, but have yet to break a brush. I might consider this though one day.

When I was there last week there were a lot of really cute brushes! They had these double-ended ones with hot pink brush heads — so cute!
I heard from a makeup artist that only metal combs are good. Plastics don’t do anything, you can’t even get them between the lashes properly, but so far I couldn’t find any metal ones.

I wanted to try that comb, but the metal teeth… yikes. I have an old Lancome one, and some of the teeth broke off already. Maybe I’ll look into this.
Funny you mentioned your Sephora shopping cart ritual; that’s EXACTLY what I’m doing right now. I’m trying to keep my cart under $200. So difficult!

I have one of those and I love it too. And I actually think that the metal teeth are easier to keep clean. Also, count yourselves lucky ladies… in Europe they cost a bit more than $ 10!

For anyone looking for an inexpensive version of a lash comb, I absolutely swear by sonia kashuk’s version. It’s a plastic fold out comb w/metal teeth and it’s fantastic. I can’t find it on the target website but I’m pretty sure (I hope!) it’s still in stores.

I have this too and love it. For years I looked for a metal eyelash comb and couldn’t find one until this came on the market. They also have a great mini travel one that folds up for about $5 that is great for your purse or travel bag.

This item is a must have!!! I got tired of breaking those plastic lash combs and brought this metal one from Sephora. I have had it for a few years now, no probs. And I have never stuck myself in my eye (knock on wood!)

The Sonia Kashuk one folds up for travel, and it has metal teef.
I would totally spring for it (and definitely will, once I can shop again). Plastic ones are frustration inducing tools of uselessness in my book. I’ve been known to ever so carefully grab a clothespin out of my sewing box to separate clumps when nothing else will do the trick, so I’m sure this neat little metal comb from Sephora will step up to the plate with a much lower risk of permanent eyesight loss to contend with.

No, I haven’t finalized my list yet. I’m debating whether to set my limit at $200 or $250, lol. Plus, I just bought stuff from my local Sephora, and I have more pretty presents coming in the mail for me, so if yet another package comes in, my mom will be breathing fire. “You’re spending money again?!” She doesn’t wear much makeup. Sigh. If only she’d understand, haha…
I have this!! its by someone else that i just cant think of right now and i bought like over 5 years ago at Victoria’s secret when they actually carried make-up lines and I paid i think close to $25 !! I maintain it as clean and dry as possible so it has maintained that long! other than that just be careful cause i have had it in my make-up case and stabbed my finger and pricked it but aside from that its wonderful!!!!
