Let’s strip, shall we? If you’ve been lusting after the hard-to-find Urban Decay Naked palette, NYX has some potentially great news for you and your wallet.
Swatching the NYX Nude on Nude Natural Look Kit ($11) this afternoon, one of three NYX sets released for summer, I was struck by how similar its shades are to some of the ones in UD’s $44 Naked.
Could it be?? A Naked dupe for one fourth the cost?
It’s not a total dupe, of course (see the comparison swatches below); there are some shades between the two that aren’t anything alike, not in how they look OR feel.
Not surprisingly, I think the Urban Decay shadows feel a little smoother and look more intense on my skin, which is not to say the NYX shadows don’t hold their own. In fact, they hella do.
The NYX colors don’t feel cheap to me at all. Finely milled, they blend nicely and look quite pigmented, especially when compared to a lot of other drugstore shadows in the same price range.
NYX definitely “brought it” with Nude on Nude, but I think UD still brought it better. UD gets the edge, but they’re charging for it too.

Oh, here’s something that could almost tip the scales in Nude on Nude’s favor: it doesn’t just come with eyeshadows (like Naked does). NYX also threw in two shimmery lip colors.

Sometimes that gets on my nerves, too, but NYX did do something right in terms of design — they put the glosses in separate tray, so at least they’re not directly next to the eyeshadows.
hmm both kits are nice but since I dont use a whole lot of neutrals/browns I’d pick the NYX one, cheaper hahaha

I think the NYX Champagne and Caviar palette would also be a good sub. Didn’t stop me from ordering the Naked palette though! Have wanted to try some UD shadows since the testers always feel so silky. And a travel-sized primer will be perfect for my trip next weekend. Now the hard part — waiting for the package to arrive.

Looks similar but I think the NYX is warmer and as a rule, warm toned neutrals skew red on me and look funky. I’d probably stick with the UD palette, though $44 is hard to swallow.

I seriously can’t believe the NAKED palette is sold out already -it was just restocked yesterday!! I posted it on my blog the minute I found out. Gosh, I don’t understand the huge fuss over it. It’s even being sold on Ebay for about $80 ..AND the dang thing isn’t even limited edition (at least from what I’ve heard!)
The NYX palette looked very similar when it wasn’t swatched side by side. It’s pretty darn good for 1/4 the price though!

It really depends on what you want. Are you looking for browns and neutrals (Naked), or do you want more purplish shades (Chanel Enigma)?

Good to hear that the damage to your ride isn’t too bad. I’m glad you are ok! Car crash injuries can take a long time to recover from. I got into a minor one w/my mom in high school and for years after my neck wonky!

Never thought to dupe these, but I am really loving my naked palette. The shadows are so soft, and it’s a no brainer for travel. So many looks in one little box, AND eyeliner!

I think I didn’t pay any attention to the Naked Palette until I saw it here. Don’t know why… maybe the stars aligned just right and I realized that YES I DO NEED MORE NEUTRALS in my life.
I’m always trying to figure out how to work eyeshadow into my work/everyday look. I can’t pull it off, I always put it on way too smokey. I was simple, natural, fresh and I’m hoping the Naked Palette will help me figure it all out (I have high hopes to say the least).
My post was actually intended to let people know that I got an email from Sephora saying the Naked Palette will be in stores in Canada on July 29th. I personally want both palettes. NYX is a very good brand, but UD eyeshadows/palettes is my weakness. If you have to choose one, I think you can’t go wrong with either – both will satisify a need for neutrals.
I can’t believe all the awesomeness coming out… I need to budget myself accordingly, I need nothing but want everything!

I think the biggest thing left out so far is that the UD palette has TWELVE shadows. And the of the 4 extra ones, 2 lean toward neutral purple and 2 lean toward neutral blue/gray. NYX’s shades are all brown. So, in my opinion, you get a lot more looks with the UD palette.
Also, the UD shadows are full size, so the equivalent would be $204 if purchased separately.
I don’t mind buying drugstore dupes for shades that I only wear once in a blue moon, but for wearable neutrals, I thing the UD palette is a steal.

i like NYX . Ecspecially the jumbo pencils . got them all .
and i got glitterpowder pigments – add some magic eyeliner from Eyeko and you have beautiful glitter rich eyeliner )
NYX is my favorite drugstore brand, but I’m sort of cautious about the palettes (despite your fantastic swatches of this one!). I have the Champagne & Caviar palette, and it was disappointingly unimpressive. The shadows feel sort of dry, very atypical of NYX shadows in my experience, and wear off fast even with UDPP underneath. I had the same problem with the other NYX “For Your Eyes Only” palette I have, Jazz Night. Champagne & Caviar was especially disappointing, though, because I thought it was going to be my Palette to End All Palettes, but I never use it!
And then at the same time, I wonder if NYX might have changed their eyeshadow formula for palettes recently–I picked up a new all-matte palette called One Night in Morocco during the recent 20% off Cherry Culture sale, and that soft, creamy texture I’ve grown to expect with the NYX singles is back. So confusing.
I’m REALLY surprised at how brilliantly similar the Nude Natural Look kit is to the Naked shades! Thanks for the side-by-side! I think I’m going to save up for the Naked palette, though (whenever it comes back), because I love NYX in general but I love Urban Decay eyeshadow palettes a whoooole lot more. I just wish they’d bring back Gridlock from the first Book of Shadows…

This is an EXACT dupe of Too Faced’s Natural eye pallette. The same eyeshadows even layed out in the same order. just look it up and see for yourself! Still a great dupe!
Do you buy your NYX locally? I’m in Petaluma so we are neighbors so to speak. The 2 stores in town no longer carry it and am looking for someplace locally that has more than the basics that Longs carried. I just bought the UD Naked palette! Haven’t received it yet though… I have to say, i’m really intrigued by this NYX palette, especially considering the price. I love how both have a mix of matte and shimmery shades. I hope the UD one has a good basic matte highlight color (like MAC Brule) and something I could potentially use for my brows. Then I definitely would be all set! 😀

Oh! Thank you a million times over for posting this. I live all the way in Mumbai, India, and UD doesn’t retail here (not that I’d spend $44 anyway, it’s a lot in Indian rupees). But Nyx is available and I love the brand. The Nude on Nude v/s Naked is a question I’ve been wondering about all week. I’m so glad someone did comparative swatches, and on NC 35 skin too. I’m one very, very happy NC 40 today.
I’m definitely going for the NYX–I like how the paler colors aren’t as outright shimmery and I think the warmer tones in that palette would suit me better. Perfect essential colors!! Thanks for sharing!
Also, am I the only one who saw the lip color swatches and immediately thought of MAC Viva Glam Cyndi and Gaga? Who knows, I might just be imagining it after lusting after the Cyndi color for so long…
I also have a hard time finding Urban Decay stuff but I read this great article on vegan cosmetics from Urban Decay. Of course, I have not tried it yet but I would like to get your opinion on how vegan cosmetics work on ones skin. Does it hold up just as well as the others or is it less long lasting?

and this is AMAZING. I’m gonna rush out and get the NYX palette. Was hesitating because the UD looked nice but it was so expensive for some kind-of bland colours and I’m a poor student 🙁

Great information thankyou. I love Nyx – great value quality products. Cant get the naked pallet in Australia, but I can get the nyx pallet! dont feel like I’m missing out now!

Two of my favorite eyeshadow brands out there: I love this! Even though Urban Decay is more expensive I think it’s definitely worth the payout. I have their Deluxe Shadow Box and I am in love. NYX is just as great and it’s fantastic that its products are so affordable. Perfect for bargain shoppers! Either way I think I’m going to have to check both out 🙂
The NIX one looks better, actually! LOL, I’m not sure, but I don’t love the Naked palette’s packaging at all! the eyeshadows are many but they look crowded and small… 🙁 But you gotta love Urban Decay, right? 😉

Wow, that is close! I’m allergic to NYX eyeshadows (haven’t tested this palette though) so I’m happy with my UD palette <3 But this is a good option for sure!
I have never tried NYX brand. What is the texture like compared to Urban Decay?
I’ll still probably get the UD Naked palette. Only because I JUST realized that the Nyx Nude on Nude palette has an even scarier resemblance to the Too Faced Natural Eye palette. I’m surprised I didn’t realize it until now!
