Two toothsome morsels made this morning’s MBB perimeter patrol more interesting than usual.
A pair of petite plumed hooligans were hanging around the office, and they kept Loss Prevention Officer Tabs busy.
They were sneaky little ragamuffins, popping in and out of hiding places and fluttering from one perch to the next. Their goal was clearly to taunt the tabby.
This weekend I decorated the upstairs deck and turned it into… Well, it was supposed to be my lady sanctuary, where I could go to relax for a bit, unwind, do some reading, sip my morning coffee and clear my head, but I didn’t have the heart to tell Tabs when he sneaked out there, so I guess it’s also going to be an occasional tabby sanctuary.
Perfectly understandable, though, because he did help. He was responsible for conducting the various inspections, like the echinacea plant taste test, and for making sure that the proper kitty condo codes were followed.
In order to perform his job to the utmost level, he set up a Curious Cat Cube as his personal on-site field office, from where he made sure that everything in the lady/tabby sanctuary was in tip-top condition.
Tabs isn’t the only kitty model with a career that took numerous twists and turns. His kitty model cousin Esmeralda from Toronto also took a diagonal kitty modeling career path. One day while walking through a garden as a young kitten, she was scouted by a renowned kitty modeling agent and originally said no because at the time she wanted to purr-sue an engineering career and become one of the kitty rocket scientists working to put the first cat on Mars.
But destiny intervened that day while she was sniffing a zinnia. She went on to become the most famous kitty model in Toronto, and one of the most successful kitty models in all of Canada.
Now she’s retired and living the good life. She spent this month traveling throughout the United States on a whirlwind sushi tour to hit the hot spots for the best sashimi. Tuna is her favorite, of course, with salmon a close second.
Tabs has always been lucky at love, but now he’s also officially lucky at cards. He got his first royal flush playing cards at the home office this week.
Good fun was had by all on Team MBB. While Connor and I splashed in the Ko’olina kiddie pool, Tabs took his staycation to the next level. He and his favorite pet sitter had an action-packed week that included two office parties, a poker game, a few team-building exercises, a workout and an afternoon spent lounging by the pool.
Ah… Peace and quiet. That’s what Tabs is looking forward to this week, getting some peace and quiet. He’ll have the office mostly to himself too. Just him and his favorite pet sitter/gravy preparer/executive assistant.
He told me this morning that he plans to spend a great deal of time contemplating career moves in his kitty sanctuary, which is where he likes to go to let his mind wander. It used to be known as “the back deck,” but that was prior to the recent renovations.
Even the Tabby Command Center was upgraded with a new state-of-the-art catnip delivery system.
Being a benevolent dictator, Tabs was nice enough to allow me to also plant some tomatoes and basil for office use, but most of the kitty sanctuary foliage is of the zinnia and fuchsia varieties.
“Is that another cat looking at my zinnias!?”
No, Tabs, it isn’t. It’s just a nosy crow.
The front yard garden is basically all set, and it’s reasonably deer-proof. There are new potted zinnias, petunias and salvia to go with the three dwarf citrus trees Tabs planted a few weekends ago.
Oh, dear.
Or deer.
Having grown fed up with the gang of local deer ruffians who sabotaged his previous attempt to enhance the company courtyard with colorful plants, Tabs enacted a new company policy authorizing the rapid installation of some deer-resistant plants.
And he’s oversaw the entire project.
He put on his landscape architect hat and drew up the plans, strategically placing each plant where it would be most visually pleasing to cats and humans and most irritating to deer.
Costco has amazing prices on citrus trees right now. They’re $18.99 each! Tabs went early this morning before the crowds and came back with three dwarf mandarins, which he then ordered El Hub to deploy in the company front entry area, a.k.a the front yard.
He supervised, of course.

I’m so excited about those mandarin trees! Now I just have to be patient for, oh, a few years. LOL!
My neighbor also went to Costco recently, and she came back with some gorgeous flowers.
