Hiya! It’s just me, wearing some stuff I bought recently at Sephora — a bronze gel eyeliner (Hourglass Solstice) and a opaque pink gloss (Hourglass Canvas).

I loooove this liner! I think the bronze color adds a touch of definition to my lids and lash lines without my making eyes look more hooded (the struggle is real when you get into your 40s).
Still undecided on how I feel about the gloss, though. It did a lot for me back in the day and was a go-to purse gloss for a few years, but now I’m like, “Eh, it’s a’ight.” I still like how it feels (not too sticky) and how it doesn’t have an obnoxious flavor or scent (vaguely minty). My soul, however, is not shook-eth to the core, and I need that now from my makeup — especially gloss!

Forgot to mention yesterday that while I was shopping I overhead a mom and daughter team chatting about blush. The mom said, “According to my daughter I’m no longer allowed to wear blush that’s powder.” The daughter replied, “You can still wear it, but you have to layer it under cream blush first.” LOL!
I wonder if that’ll be me and Connor in the future… Something tells me maybe? Or maybe not. She had a dance performance a couple weeks ago and was totally firm on NOT wearing blush or eyeshadow. Red lipstick was fine (and it was part of their costume, so she had to wear it), but she absolutely refused to put anything on her cheeks or lids.

Too funny!
Your friendly neighborhood beauty addict,
Karen

OMG! Connor looks so grown up in her costume! The sequins are giving me all the flashbacks. I took dance when I was around her age. That was 1977 and we performed to Glenn Campbell’s Rhinestone Cowboy and Teddy Bears on Parade. We lived in Arizona at the time so maybe that’s why there was a country tune?
Getting to wear makeup was my favorite part of the dance recital. We lived next door to Lola, who was a glamorous Latina woman. I idolized her and she helped do my makeup. My mom back in ’77 was still solidly in her hippie days and didn’t have a ton of makeup.
Thanks for the tip on the bronze eyeliner. I too have very hooded eyes and don’t wear eyeliner anymore because it looks harsh on me, but I will try that and see what happens. Since you mentioned Sephora, do you think they are slipping in their customer service, or is it just my store that has this problem? One of the hallmarks of Sephora was the ability to get samples of practically anything, but my local store no longer has the sample containers, so they no longer provide this service, and yesterday I went to get the free birthday gift for January, and they had not gotten them in yet and we are more than halfway through the month. It seems like they are out of stock on things a lot too. With so much talk about the retail apocalypse, I was just wondering if they are having financial issues like so many stores, or maybe my local store just has bad management. What do you think?
The Sephora near me went through a phase like there were they didn’t have the sample containers or much in stock. It lasted about 2-3 months and I just about gave up asking for samples. Then all of a sudden just before the sale in the fall they started offering to make samples on products I was looking at. There are definitely still supply chain issues. A lot of the packaging for cosmetics is made overseas where they’ve had more extensive and rigorous lockdowns. I talked with my favorite Tom Ford rep and he said a lot of their delays are because they are waiting on packaging, both components and outer boxes.
So crazy that we’re still feeling the effects of the pandemic. I wonder if things will ever feel normal again. I guess it’s going to take a really long time!
The pandemic kicked off a lot of economic problems and now a lot of company’s are laying off employees. There’s going to be more struggles and pain before the world wide economic ship gets righted again. And the war against Ukraine certainly isn’t helping in that part of the world.
I hated wearing makeup for plays and stuff as a kid. I love this liner, it looks gorgeous and I’ve been digging lighter liners too. I have a Guerlain Intense Color Eye Pencil in Jungle Green I love, kind of a bronzey khaki.
I remember you mentioning that color a few times! I usually reserve khaki for summer, but I’m thinking it’s going to be a year-round thing for me now!
Canvas looks like a pretty color and I’d probably like it if it was a glossy lipstick, but I’m not a gloss person. As someone who spent an hour this afternoon quickly going through her makeup and tossing things that haven’t been worn in ages, I say return that gloss if it doesn’t make your heart sing. Then find one that does.
I’m at the point where I’d rather have fewer things that I absolutely love and adore and feel great in (makeup and clothes) than a ton of stuff that’s just alright.
Now if cosmetic companies would just stop discontinuing my favorite products. Grrrrr.
Ooh, speaking of purging, I just tossed two tubes of mascara that I just felt “meh” about yesterday. Definitely need to do more!
Re: clothes. I’m so done wearing clothes that don’t make my heart sing… I’m tired of trying to be chic in neutrals. LOL
Neutrals are great for building blocks of a wardrobe. But with your complexion and coloring I think you’d look fabulous in color! If you’ve got neutrals you can add pops of color or prints to liven things up.
I have an olive green sweater from Helmut Lang with a super deep vee neck. Basically it needs to be worn over something to be decent. I’ve worn it once. Dear Husband likes and says I should keep it. But I haven’t worn it in years. So I donated it this week while he’s out of town.
Karen – the bronze eyeliner looks FABO on you.
I think that’ll be you and Connie in the future – you seem like a terrific mother-daughter team. Makes me hopeful for my sister and niece, she is only 2 years old but my sister always wanted a daughter and a closeness like yours with your Connor Claire would be beautiful!
Thanks, Vita. I recently went through a phase where I was all about brown liner because it’s softer and more forgiving than black on me, but I’m starting to think even certain brown shades make my eyes look more hooded, hmm. Anyway, I’m now on a mission to find different options in the bronze and taupe liner category. I might venture into khaki too as an everyday shade, rather than a summer color.
That’s so sweet that you get to be an auntie. 🙂 I bet your niece loves hanging out with you!
That will be interesting – will Connor follow in your foot steps as makeup lover or will she try to rebel by rejecting it completely? My daughter (about to turn 9) so far shows no interest.
