I haven’t surfed warm waters in five years, babes. FIVE. That’s a minor tragedy when you’re a water baby at heart. Still, I’m not salty about the mermaid vibes emanating from this teal tube of Covergirl mascara, even though looking at it makes me wish I was paddling out in Diamond Head’s shadow at Waikiki Beach instead of googling gluten-free Pop Tart recipes at my desk in Novato…

COVERGIRL Flourish by Lash Blast Mascara ($9.49)
Now, the actual mascara, which has one of those all-around formulas for a “boosted but natural” lash look, inside the tube isn’t teal (it comes in Black, Brown and Very Black), so if your lash situation can currently be described as long and full, cool. You might like this because it doesn’t flake, doesn’t feel stiff or heavy, and it’s also easy to remove (and it’s less than $10).
However, as you probably already know because I’ve only said it about a million times, I crave all the mascara bells and whistles to the extreme! — so I want/need my mascara to deliver enough drama to rival a Real Housewives season finale.
So, yeah. Far as drugstore mascaras go, Flourish is a’ight, but let me gently steer you over to L’oreal Voluminous Lash Paradise, which lifts, separates and stretches out my lashes to make them look super long (but not, like, scary spidery).
Your friendly neighborhood beauty addict,
Karen

Not for me then, I want all the drama too.
Yes!!!
I bought this, it’s definitely a natural look, even with the white mascara base, so it’s mot my go-to.
I just picked up the L’Oréal Voluminous mascara in burgundy last week. It smudged a little the first time I wore it (and since my undereye circles veer kind of purply red, it made those look worse), but it doesn’t seem to do that if I use a primer. The color is fun for my blue eyes, but not super noticeable or different from brown mascara, so not up your alley.
I was gonna try it with the base to see if it made any difference! I’m thinking it probably won’t, LOL!
What other new drugstore things have you tried?
Hmm… I picked up a twist up Maybelline eye pencil in kind of a burgundy collar, seems nice and non irritating. They had an olive too. I also saw Nyx released a brown version of their Epic Ink liner, but I already have two brown liquid liners open that I really like (Clinique and Clio Kills). I also seem to eternally be disappointed with anything by Nyx.
I need a new lip balm, I feel the air getting drier already!
Hmm, that Maybelline one sounds interesting! I’m going to Target later today to allegedly look for gluten-free Kind Arther flour to make a roux, but I’m 100% sure I’ll end up looking at makeup, ha ha ha. Will see if I can find this.
Funny you should mention NYX because I wore something of theirs the other day. They have a line of pastel liners for the waterline called Faux Whites and it’s really good!
The King Arthur flour is legit. One of the best ones i tried. I successfully made a version of my Dad’s Christmas cookies with it. Slightly drier than the gluteny cookies but good.
OK, cool. Kim here in the comments said it was really good and so I really hope I can find it! *fingers crossed* that I can make this roux happen!
I picked up one of these because I favor the brown color of Covergirl Lash Blast. It’s hard to find a true brown mascara- most are blackened brown. Brown mascaras that volumes are my favorite for soft, everyday bronzed eye looks.
How do you like it, Lorraine? Do you find it has enough volume/length for you?
I haven’t cracked it open yet. I liked the last Covergirl Lash Blast that I tried- the one in the purple tube. My lashes are really fine/sparse, so the volume is key. I liked it. When I try the really thick drama-rama mascaras that coat the lashes, they can weigh them down in a droopy, unflattering way. So this one is a great compromise, and I can layer to my heart’s content without getting too heavy and keeping that lift I worked so hard to curl in.
I hear you on needing the extra lift. Have you ever tried a thin layer of waterproof mascara as a primer? It is MAGIC for holding the curl!
thanks for the tip! never tried that- I need to hunt down a waterproof one- and try it. I never have waterproof mascara onhand, It’s a special occasion mascara, I get it out for events I am likely to cry at hahaha
I have been the reigning mascara queen of the universe – always wanted them thicker and volumized to within an inch of their lives. But lately I am liking my eyes to look completely different – shiny eye lids and little to almost NO mascara at all. I almost skipped it entirely this morning. I can hardly believe this but it sure makes my routine quicker in the morning without having to spend the time putting on at least 3 layers and sometimes 2 different products. I’d be worried that I’ve suffered some kind of brain damage except that I’ve lived with myself long enough to know how my tastes change over time and every once in a while I switch things up a LOT. I haven’t worn eyeliner for at least 5 years now and I can still stand to look at myself; in fact I like how my eyes look now. Crazy.
I’m all about the drama, too. I still have Lash Paradise on my list (the waterproof version), though I did just pick up some more of my fave YSL at the VIB sale.
PS Good luck with the flour. If you can’t find it, give me a shout. 🙂
Have you tried Glossier mascara? It is fabulous…I ordered a backup the day my first tube arrived!
