As a kid of the ’90s/early ’00s, me and lip gloss have a long history. One of my favorites was Bonne Bell Lip Lites Lip Gloss. I can’t remember the exact shade I used to beg my mom to get me, but I do remember the tacky, pasty feeling on my lips after I applied it.
I lost my general interest in lip products sometime in high school, opting instead for just (far too heavy) eyeliner and mascara, and since I started actually wearing makeup more frequently a few years ago, I haven’t touched gloss, mostly because, all I remember about it is that awful tacky feeling.
I feel like a lot has changed in lip gloss formulas over the years, especially when it comes to higher end products. Lately, since I’ve been trying to break out of my regular makeup routine, I’ve been experimenting again with glosses, like these two amazing glosses from the Estee Lauder Pure Color Envy Sculpting Gloss collection — Reckless Bloom (a shimmer gloss) and Copper Ego (a shine gloss) — which I’ve been all about this week.
These really surprised me!
Copper Ego has a slightly buildable sheer-to-medium coverage, while Reckless Bloom has the same coverage but isn’t quite as buildable.
The shimmer, though? An extra layer of Reckless Bloom really “ups” the sparkle factor.
First, I took Reckless Bloom out for a spin, and despite being a little weary of the shimmer, I like it the most of the two. The shimmer particles are small enough that you don’t get any kind of gritty feeling once it starts to dry down, and the light pink tint is just enough color to make your lips really pop.
Copper Ego, when swatched, appears to have more of a tint than it actually does on my lips. It’s a really satisfying nude gloss, but it doesn’t dry as nicely as Reckless Bloom. It starts drying out much faster, whereas Reckless Bloom seems more moisturizing overall. It also wears off quicker, succumbing to my coffee habit much sooner than Reckless Bloom does.
Needless to say, these two glosses have really changed my mind about lip gloss. They’re available now in these and other shades at Estee Lauder counters for $26.
I’ll definitely be working these into my makeup routine more often. They’re a welcome pick-me-up and a good way to give my lips a break from drying mattes.

Bonne Bell Mocha Mousse and Cinnamon Roll were my jam in 1998.
The cinnamon roll was a translucent pink with shimmer, mocha mousse was a cream.
Now I mostly wear lipsticks or tinted lipbalms.
I love the look of the lipgloss on your lips! In fact, I love the clean look. Casually pretty.
The mention of the lipglosses in the 90s makes me so nostalgic. I remember the lipglosses whcih used to come in roller bottles. I wanted to make them stay on my lips, but, since those were mostly glycerin with some amount of color, those would go everywhere.
I have never been fond of lipglosses until, may be it’s the lack of intense pigmentation.
Reckless reminds me of a similar lipgloss from the Indian brand Lakme. It was the best one I had used and I had used up the entire bottle. Don’t know why they withdrew the line. Even the casing looks similar, except that Lakme had a steel color cap.
I remember the roller ball glosses! They were really popular, unfortunately they weren’t too effective, haha. It’s usually lack of pigmentation that wards me off lipgloss as well, but these were pretty nice.

I am totally a gloss girl. I have dry lips, plus most lip colors/product cling to my lips so I don’t usually have problems with wear time, which might be a down side for most when wearing glosses. I find I get a good 4-5 hours with glosses.
Some of the non tacky ones that I love are the round revlon glosses, nyx butter gloss, Mac cremesheen, ysl glosses and tint in oils.

I am a lipstick girl, after having the same sticky gloss experiences in my youth, but I agree: Formulation has changed. i will wear the occasional gloss here and there, but only buy it if the color really stands out to me.
I have a love hate relationship with gloss. Having pets there is always hair in my gloss!

I love shiny lips. I much prefer that over the constant onslaught of mattes every. single. day. I’m glad there are new formulas that don’t make a sticky mess that wears off the first 3 seconds after you apply it, too!

These are quite pretty, though I like them better paired together. I’m more of a lipstick lover but have been known to combine the two when my mood strikes 🙂
