Sometimes when I get dressed I like to pretend that Michael Kors is sitting there in a Project Runway judge’s chair talking mad smack about my wardrobe.
“There are more holes in those pants than one of my blind nana’s knitting projects,” he says, and “you look like an ice cream truck at a Magic: The Gathering convention.”
It stops me from reverting to my natural state, where I dress like a hip-less 13-year-old skater boy, and keeps me on the lookout for cute, affordable fashion finds, like this black-and-white lace peplum top I scored on sale on Anthropologie’s website.
Originally $68, the Deletta Sculpted Lace Top was marked down to $49.95, which is still a lot more than $10 Old Navy shorts (which I’m also wearing), but after reading so many rave reviews about it on the Anthro website, I gave in, figuring that if it didn’t move me, I’d just return it.
Babe, this top does werk! With it on, I feel taller, thinner and — by the gods — stylish.
Cotton and nylon, the stretchy black-and-white lace top has black side panels, a black banded waist and a zippered back. It’s also machine washable.
I’ve been looking for a peplum top for ages and just haven’t been able to find one I like that really fits.
This one’s cut seems to flatter lots of different body types. Many of the reviews I read mentioned how it handled different clothing challenges, like two of mine, being short waisted with narrow shoulders.
The material stretches to accommodate bigger bosoms, while the peplum waist hides tummies, and the black panels slim the sides.
I really like where the waist sits — in the Goldilocks zone/sweet spot where it’s neither too low nor high and makes my short torso look longer.
The lace worried me a little at first… I thought it would be itchy (hate that, ugh!), but it turned out not to be.
It’s just dressy enough for me, too. I can pair it with a black pencil skirt or dark skinny jeans and a black blazer to go out to a nice dinner or to meet someone for a business lunch, but at the same time, it isn’t overly stuffy or formal. I could just as easily wear it with a pair of shorts (I think black, white or a bright color like yellow would look really cute), a stack of bracelets and a pair of wedges for a more causal look.
And being black and white, it goes with everything!

Beautiful piece! You’re really making wish that Anthropologie was more accessible in Canada. Suggestion: Pair it with a tighter fitting bottom. Although I love love love those shorts (I’m still wearing my sale Old Navy shorts from 4 years ago!), the looser fit makes the peplum flare look like it keeps flaring and hides your womanly figure. Like you suggested, a pencil skirt, would really give it the hour glass shape that a peplum top can offer. Or even slightly tighter shorts would work. You show that peplum who’s boss!!
What size did you end up getting? I love Anthro, but sometimes the sizing is incredibly wonky – I’ve found the Deletta stuff runs really big.
