1. Cat rice
First thing’s first: If you’re trying to do low carb, look away. LOL! This is a simple, delicious rice dish you can eat on its own or with other meat or vegetable accoutrements. It involves hot cooked rice, soy sauce and bonito (tuna) flakes. I add a pat of butter to take it to the next level!
BTW, I found bonito flakes at Whole Foods, of all places!
I usually have cat rice with a sunny side up egg and sliced tomatoes.
2. The show “Maggie” on Hulu, and the makeup
So, you’ve probably heard me say it before, but here it is again for the cheap seats in the back. Ever since I had Connor, I can no longer watch anything too scary or heavy. For whatever reason, it’s just too much. Anywho. This is a very fun, light comedy-slash-sci-fi show with likable characters and sharp dialogue.
The story centers around Maggie, a psychic who can read other people’s futures. Unfortunately, her present life is kind of a mess.
Every time I watch this show I laugh out loud!
Oh, the makeup is fantastic. It’s a fun mix of wearable and chic looks, and I’ve been getting a ton of inspiration. I just watched an episode where Maggie had a gig working as a psychic at a high school prom, and she wore beautiful two-toned blue liner on her lids along with blue mascara. It was just the right amount of color. I tried to find out the show’s makeup artists, and they’re listed here on IMDB.
3. Listening to your body when it needs rest
Historically I haven’t been great about this, because even when I’m tired, if I have time available, it’s usually my first inclination to push through uncomfortable feelings and be productive. It typically does not serve me well.

Anywho, I’ve been feeling a little frayed at the edges lately, so yesterday I forced myself to do absolutely nothing. All I did was rest. I ate cat rice, napped on the couch and watched TV.
4. “The White Lotus” on HBO
This show won a bunch of Emmys, and I wanted to watch it mostly because I adore Jennifer Coolidge. It’s a character driven show without a defined villain, so if you prefer your shows to have a typical story arc (nothing wrong with that!), this might not be the series for you. I ended up really liking it.
It does have very odd pacing, so be prepared for that. Oh, and don’t watch it around any kids. Too many shcmexytime scenes.
5. These pants
Jean from the Extra Petite blog recently recommended these Abercrombie and Fitch pants. I bought the gray pair in the short length and I LOVE THEM. They’re soft, lightweight and comfortable, machine washable, and you can easily dress them up or down.

FYI, I read in the comments that these run small, so you might want to consider going up a size. I did and am very happy with the fit. They sell out fast, so if you see a pair you like, grab them ASAP.
Your friendly neighborhood beauty addict,
Karen
P.S. TGIF!

Happy Friday Karen and fam!
I need to try making cat rice, I have never heard of it but it sounds like something I would love. I am not nixing carbs but I do like to have some protein in every meal so the tuna and adding an egg sounds just perfect!
The White Lotus was awesome! I am excited for the next season to come out! I don’t like watching anything too heavy or dramatic either anymore and for that I have the Kardashians. Season 2 of their new show on Hulu just started!
As far as clothing, I’ve been loving Eileen Fisher! I didn’t think it was a brand I would ever like (too boring and bland) but now I’m 39 going on 40 with twins and I do not have the energy to plan and put together cute outfits. So lately I just want something made of somewhat natural material (I hate how everything now is polyester or some version of it, especially in the “fast fashion” world) and that fits/drapes nicely. It is on the spendy side but the couple of pieces I have I found at thrift/consignments store for very reasonable. So now I am scouring the internet (Poshmark and ThredUp) for more!
Have a relaxing weekend, Karen!
Oh my gosh, I will have to look into Eileen Fisher ASAP. I, too, am at the point where I just want to get dressed without much thought, yet I still want to look put together. Love the idea of something more on the natural side of materials.
I didn’t know there was going to be a season 2 of the White Lotus. Yay!
How is the sleep training going?
Do it! I’m sure they have petite sizes too! The sleep training is going pretty well, thanks for asking! I am on the search for wearable blankets and sleep sacks since they aren’t really supposed to have blankets in their cribs quite yet but it is getting pretty cold here at night already – we obviously have heat but I do keep my house on the cooler side!
I much prefer a cooler house at night… I swear I sleep better.
When Connor was teeny tiny, I remember putting her in tights and a onesie before bed because she was not having any sort of sleep sack. LOL!
Was there something in the air yesterday? Because I crashed big time, too and ended up napping on the sofa in the afternoon.
Love those pink rose and kitty socks!!!
I love how you notice the makeup looks when you watch shows. I almost always notice the clothes and accessories.
I’d love those pants in a lightweight wool crepe or a silk/linen twill. Or a light weight cotton twill. I try to remind myself how bad polyester is for the environment.
BTW, I didn’t know that Abercrombie was still in business. The local mall store has closed.
Have a good weekend! Looks like it’s gonna be warmer again. I am so ready for autumn!
If you find those pants in a different type of fabric please let me know!
I’ve actually never purchased anything from Abercrombie before; I couldn’t bear to go into the store at the mall because it was so stinky! This is my first item and I mostly bought it because of the short length on the pants.
ooh, Jennifer Coolidge! She’s so much fun. I’ll have to add The White Lotus to my watchlist! Rest is so important and so hard to prioritize in our society. It’s great that you’re thinking about it and trying to get yourself to rest more, because it really will serve you well to rest.
I hope you like the show. It takes a while to get into, but once you’re in, you become totally invested.
Have a great weekend, SJ!
I hope you have a great weekend too, Karen!
Karen, please tell us where you got those adorable cat socks! They are so pretty!
Thanks,
Anne Marie
Hi Anne Marie!
I got them a long time ago. I believe the brand is Sock It To Me!
No low carb for me – it might help the waistline, but puts me in such a bad mood, nobody wants that.
