Uh…I’ve been doing a lot of braids lately because I’m growing my bangs out, and they’re driving me bananas, and for the life of me I cannot braid my hair while looking at myself in the mirror.
Is that just a me thing? Is anyone else having this issue??
Like, sometimes I’ll be sitting there NOT looking in the mirror, and I’ll bust out all sorts of cray-cray braids that don’t turn out half bad, but the minute I try to do it looking in the mirror (like if I go into the bathroom and braid my hair in there), I get lopsided, uneven braids.
What’s up with that?
Shouldn’t it be easier if you can see yourself in the mirror? Am I just a weirdo? Does this happen to you too?
Deep thoughts today, LOL! 🙂

Karen

Yes! Looking in the mirror makes it harder braid. I think because your brain gets confused by everything being backwards. I once had my hairstylist ask me how I could braid my own hair (she couldn’t). I told her, “Don’t look in the mirror!”
I think using a visual aid raises your expectations for a better braid, so when you don’t create a nicer style you ask yourself why it looks so bad.
That might be it! Hmm…
I am like incapable of braiding my hair, BUT I have never tried doing it while not looking in a mirror, so maybe I’ll give that a shot!
I bet it’ll be easier. Let me know how it goes!
It definitely felt easier, and didn’t take as long, but it still came out terrible. I think with some practice this could be the way to go 🙂 Thanks for the tip!
Omg, I thought I was the only one! I can’t braid hair while looking in the mirror, too. Plus, why bother? You can’t see what you’re doing in the back of your head anyway.
I’m happy to know I’m not alone in this, LOL! I wonder if there’s some sort of science behind why it’s so difficult…
I can’t braid my hair or put in contacts using a mirror.
Wow, I wish I could put contacts on without a mirror! That’s talent!
I use a mirror to divide my hair into even sections and pick up even sections when doing braids for something fancy, but I never ever try to see what the hey is going on back there. Mirror Me and Real Me don’t get along. Normally though, I don’t use a mirror at all.
It’s also good for practical purposes because if you are in the mall (and need to put it up quickly) or, I don’t know, stuck in the wilderness, there are no mirrors. So, it’s more practical to not depend on Mirror You.
That’s a good idea! I’m going to use a mirror next time I have to section pieces off before braiding.
How’s Zena doing? Been a while since I’ve gotten a Z. update.
I can’t braid while looking in the mirror! The reverse image makes me move my hands the wrong direction.
I can’t braid when looking in a mirror either, my hands seem to go the wrong direction if I do. Blind braiding it is.
Agreed. I think it would be the same for any kind of technical work requiring fine motor skills. When your eyes see what your hands are doing, backward, it totally messes you up. 🙂
