So…what is the Monday Poll?
Excellent question! It isn’t, contrary to its name, an actual poll, like with little clicky buttons. It’s just a list of five more or less random questions I’ve been posting on this blog every Monday morning for the past quadrillion years (since 2007). I love reading your answers, and it helps me get my week off to a good start.
1. When you were a kid, did you go trick-or-treating?
Oh, yes. I remember going ’round the neighborhood with my friends by ourselves (it was a different time, man), and for some weird reason, I don’t ever remember my little brother coming with us. I don’t recall trying to ditch him on purpose, but knowing me, I probably went through some high-level machinations to leave him behind so I could go by myself. 🙂
Little brothers… such a pain.
2. Would you rather go to a Halloween haunted house, or a pumpkin patch?
I’d go to the haunted house, because here in Nor Cal, pumpkin patches are usually, dry, dusty and hot, and the bathroom situation is usually pretty sketchy…
I also think it’s neat to see pumpkins growing on the vine, but the overall pumpkin patch experience isn’t my favorite thing. Even though I do find haunted houses scary (and a little scarier after watching Us), I don’t mind them as long as I’m with someone, and they don’t mind me Wilhelm scream-ing through the entire thing.
3. Your favorite scary movie?
The Shining. ‘Nuff said.
4. Speaking of scary movies, how would you fare if Michael Myers were in hot pursuit?
I’m pretty nimble and quick on my feet, so I’d like to think I’d give him a run for his money… He might end up chopping off a fat lock of hair, but I’d make it out of that house alive!
5. Orange or black eyeshadow?
Orange!
Fire update

Good morning, my friend. I hope you’re having a good Monday so far. If you’ve been following the news, you might know that there’s a pretty intense fire burning about 30 miles north of where I live (Novato) right now, and so all the power in my town, and throughout the entire county, is off and has been since Saturday.
There hasn’t been an official evacuation for us (knock on wood), but we decided to go to my parents’ house in the East Bay because Connor has antibiotics that we need to keep refrigerated, and we had no means of communicating at the house because our cell phones and ISP weren’t working.
Yeah…it’s been a surreal couple of days, and it looks like the power may not be back on until Thursday, depending on the fire and the weather. So we’re playing it by ear.
But we are safe and hanging in there!
If you’re north of us and/or have been evacuated from the towns in Sonoma, sending good thoughts for you and your family.
Your friendly neighborhood beauty addict,
Karen

We went every year and loved it. Eventually my parents let us have a Halloween party at the house around HS because they didn’t want us roaming around the streets.
2. Would you rather go to a Halloween haunted house, or a pumpkin patch?
Haunted house!!! I’ll take the kiddos to the pumpkin patch every year but I love a good haunted house!
3. Your favorite scary movie?
The Ring
4. Speaking of scary movies, how would you fare if Michael Myers were in hot pursuit?
I would totally get away! Growing up with a lot of boys, I’m pretty good and throwing things behind me to create as many obstacles between myself and whomever is trying to get me. lol
5. Orange or black eyeshadow?
Orange
Hope you guys get the green light to get back home soon! Hoping this coming wind storm doesn’t make the fires worse.
1. When you were a kid, did you go trick-or-treating? yes, it was huge back then, and we lived in a neighborhood where we knew everyone, so it was very safe.
2. Would you rather go to a Halloween haunted house, or a pumpkin patch? I could do the haunted house, as long as I had people with me.
3. Your favorite scary movie? Not crazy about horror movies, I like the old timey ones like the original Frankenstein and Dracula
4. Speaking of scary movies, how would you fare if Michael Myers were in hot pursuit? As he never looks like he is moving that fast, I think I could get away, as long as I didn’t trip, like every single person in every horror movie ever!
5. Orange or black eyeshadow? orange
I am so glad you guys are safe! I have been watching all the coverage, and I cannot believe this is happening again! Damn PG&E!! I hope it does not come any closer, and your home is spared, but so glad that you are safe, and so sorry you are having to go through this again! it must be so nerve-wracking. Keeping you in my prayers.
1. When you were a kid, did you go trick-or-treating? Yes! Halloween is my favorite holiday. I love nothing better than seeing all the kids—young and old—dressed up. We get a couple hundred trick-or-treaters every year. Seeing so many kids with their families out and about is a joy.
2. Would you rather go to a Halloween haunted house, or a pumpkin patch? What about a haunted pumpkin patch? They grow pumpkins and corn where I live so the “Pumpkin Patch” is the real deal. Every year they have a haunted hayride ends back at the patch where hot cider and treats await. It’s great fun.
3. Your favorite scary movie? It’s not a scary movie but a fun Halloween one—Hocus Pocus.
4. Speaking of scary movies, how would you fare if Michael Myers were in hot pursuit? Hmmm . . . Seeing I’m in the later half of my seventies, probably not very well.
5. Orange or black eyeshadow? Orange—with black liner and contour. I know selecting both is cheating, but hey, it’s Halloween and I’m all about the black and orange ?
1. When you were a kid, did you go trick-or-treating? Yes. Went with my older brothers until I was in 7th or 8th grade. Then I decided I was too cool to go.
2. Would you rather go to a Halloween haunted house, or a pumpkin patch? A pumpkin patch. Preferably one on the coast where it’s foggier and cooler.
3. Your favorite scary movie? I don’t like scary movies. Does Edward Scissorhands count?
4. Speaking of scary movies, how would you fare if Michael Myers were in hot pursuit? Who? Like I said, I don’t watch scary movies.
5. Orange or black eyeshadow? Black
Glad you’ve gone to your parents. I can’t imagine the air quality in the north bay right now. Dear Daughter’s power is out too. She got a text from PG&E that they were shutting her power off again on Tuesday. She was like, they haven’t even turned it back on, so how can they shut if off again. Craziness. Stay safe, stay well. Hope Connor is feeling better soon.
1. When you were a kid, did you go trick-or-treating? Absolutely, I believe my last year was when I was 13-14 and I thought it was cool to stay home and hand out the candy.
2. Would you rather go to a Halloween haunted house, or a pumpkin patch? I’m a big scaredy cat. I’d like to say the haunted house but I absolutely cannot do those jump scare ones. I’ll have a heart attack. I went to one last year with my son and his girlfriend and her family and I could not wait for it to end. My son’s shirt was all stretched from me hanging onto him for dear life.
3. Your favorite scary movie? Around this time last year I was watching the Haunting of Hill House on Netflix. It was scary and good!
4. Speaking of scary movies, how would you fare if Michael Myers were in hot pursuit? If I had a good head start, I think I’d do OK.
5. Orange or black eyeshadow? How about both? 🙂
Oh and forgot to add, hope you guys stay safe and your home fares well!!
I hope you got my prior note about the fire, and glad to hear you’ve not been evacuated (yet).
Thanks to meat belly for his correspondence, good luck in your new job, and God bless, be safe and well.

1. When you were a kid, did you go trick-or-treating?
Yes! Last year was when I was 14. However I live in a rural area so as a kid we had to go in the car and when I got a little older I’d meet with a friend to go to their neighborhood.
2. Would you rather go to a Halloween haunted house, or a pumpkin patch?
Pumpkin patch! I hate being startled. We did them at Cedar Point a few weeks ago.
3. Your favorite scary movie?
I don’t really like scary movies! Silent Night Deadly Night 2 is hilariously bad though so I love it.
4. Speaking of scary movies, how would you fare if Michael Myers were in hot pursuit?
Real bad. I can’t run to save my life, heart condition and Ehler Danlos. I could throw a hula hoop at him though.
5. Orange or black eyeshadow?
Orange! Our team is doing Dr. Seuss costumes for Halloween at work and I’m Fox in Socks so there will definitely be orange makeup.
Glad you’re safe, what’s going on out there is scary. I guess I’ll take Michigan’s weird weather!
Oh and we had only one neighbor, who always gave us a whole bag of fun size candy bars so that we’d always say he was the best on Halloween. And what do you know, we still do! And he’s still my parents’ neighbor.
1. Trick or treat
If we didn’t go to a party my father drove us to the houses that gave out the good candy or money .
2. I love Haunted Houses
3. Exorcist nuff said
4. Mile would win
5. Black eyeshadow . One of my favorites
Hope you’re having a nice week, Michelle!
1. When you were a kid, did you go trick-or-treating? Oh yes. Every year without fail. Then when I had a kid, I started going again and it was just as much fun as I remembered it! Now said kid is 16 and too cool for trick or treating or hanging out with the parental units and we don’t get hardly any trick or treaters so my kid fun is over! I’m trying to recover with a fun Halloween cocktail and a movie.
2. Would you rather go to a Halloween haunted house, or a pumpkin patch? haunted house.
3. Your favorite scary movie? easy decision, “Get Out” by Jordan Peele. That was terrifying. I want to see his latest “Us” but I haven’t worked up the nerve yet. Maybe I’ll rent it on Halloween?
4. Speaking of scary movies, how would you fare if Michael Myers were in hot pursuit? I’d be a goner. I am so slow. He’d easily catch me.
5. Orange or black eyeshadow? Black!
I’m so sorry you had to evacuate but I’m glad you’re safe and somewhere with power in case little miss has a relapse.
Unsolicited life tip: watch Us before visiting Santa Cruz, not after.
1. When you were a kid, did you go trick-or-treating?
Oh yes! My mom always sewed my costumes from scratch! I loved it, we had so much fun thinking of costume ideas and getting creative.!
2. Would you rather go to a Halloween haunted house, or a pumpkin patch?
I am a wimp. I think even the ones appropriate for kids would startle me way more than I’m comfortable to admit. I guess I’ll hang out with some pumpkins!
3. Your favorite scary movie?
Ha ha. I don’t do scary, but I recall The Ring being one of the hardest movies for me to recover from. The Descent is a close second. *shudders* We recently watched Hellboy and their depiction of Baba Yaga actually made me lose a little sleep lol!
4. Speaking of scary movies, how would you fare if Michael Myers were in hot pursuit?
So long as I keep my wits about me, I think I’d be okay.
5. Orange or black eyeshadow?
Orange for sure! I’m planning on rocking Mac Texture eyeshadow on Samhain!
The Ring is really scary! Took me a while to recover from it too.
1. When you were a kid, did you go trick-or-treating? Of course – we lived in a rural area in NY when I was little and only had 10-12 houses to go to. Once we moved to NJ near Philly we would go out with pillowcases. There had to be 150 houses to hit. We lost our minds!
2. Would you rather go to a Halloween haunted house, or a pumpkin patch? Pumpkin patch since it’s usually cool where I live
3. Your favorite scary movie? Alien
4. Speaking of scary movies, how would you fare if Michael Myers were in hot pursuit? I’m speedy so I’d leave him in the dust!
5. Orange or black eyeshadow? Can I say neither?
Pillowcase candy holders are the best. We did that too.
1. When you were a kid, did you go trick-or-treating? Yes I did!
2. Would you rather go to a Halloween haunted house, or a pumpkin patch? Pumpkin patch. It’s one of my favorite Fall activities but I’m in the Midwest where we have an actual Fall!
3. Your favorite scary movie? I don’t know how scary it is but Poltergeist and the Sixth Sense are two of my all time favorite movies!
4. Speaking of scary movies, how would you fare if Michael Myers were in hot pursuit? I’m faster!
5. Orange or black eyeshadow? Orange, definitely ?
Poltergeist traumatized me when I was a kid, Erica. I still haven’t recovered,
1. When you were a kid, did you go trick-or-treating?
Yes, candy was my life!
2. Would you rather go to a Halloween haunted house, or a pumpkin patch?
A pumpkin patch, unless the haunted house is more mystical and eerie than actually scary. I’m jumpy enough.
3. Your favorite scary movie?
The original (1963) version of “The Haunting” — though I’m a Hitchcock fan as well. This month I’ve been enjoying spooky classics starring Vincent Price, Christopher Lee, Bela Lugosi, Peter Lorre and Boris Karloff.
4. Speaking of scary movies, how would you fare if Michael Myers were in hot pursuit?
To quote Kirsty MacColl, “In These Shoes?”
5. Orange or black eyeshadow? Black is cool but orange makes my blue eyes pop and was also my jam in the ’80s .
LOL to that quote, Susan, ?
1. Yes, but with one parent. Even in the 1960s most parents didn’t let their kids go trick-or-treating alone. I went at ages 5, 6, 7, 9, and 10. I missed age 8 because I was sick, and I didn’t go after 10 because I was going to turn 12 shortly after Halloween, and I thought that was too old for trick-or-treating. Now we see 18-year-olds doing it in this area (that’s ridiculous).
2. Pumpkin patch, since I’ve never seen one. I don’t like being scared – real life is scary enough.
3. Probably “The Sixth Sense,” even though it’s only mildly scary. Like I said, I don’t like being scared, and real life is scary enough.
4. Not well, unless I was armed.
5. Black.
That movie is pretty scary to me too, CL.
Hi Karen, Just read about you staying with your family. Stay safe and hopefully you can come back to your home soon! But wonderful that you have a safe haven there. Big hug to Connor!
Thank you, Silvia. I’ll pass along that hug for you. ❤️ I hope you’re having a good week so far.
I’m so glad you guys are safe!
1. When you were a kid, did you go trick-or-treating? Yes
2. Would you rather go to a Halloween haunted house, or a pumpkin patch? Haunted house
3. Your favorite scary movie? The Shining and the original Night of the Living Dead.
4. Speaking of scary movies, how would you fare if Michael Myers were in hot pursuit? I’m not very fast, but I’m tough and I’m smart. I think I could figure something out to hide or evade him.
5. Orange or black eyeshadow? Orange
1. When you were a kid, did you go trick-or-treating? No, I lived in a very rural area of a very small town. The elementary school I went to had a great Halloween Carnival every year. So that’s what we did. I miss that Halloween Carnival.
2. Would you rather go to a Halloween haunted house, or a pumpkin patch? Pumpkin Patch, I’m not a big fan of scary stuff.
3. Your favorite scary movie? “The Thing”
4. Speaking of scary movies, how would you fare if Michael Myers were in hot pursuit? I would totally be a victim, I’m 100% okay with that.
5. Orange or black eyeshadow? Black, just a little, to darken or line the eyes.
Taking the Monday poll on Wednesday? Seems about right. 🙂 What a scary time for everyone affected by the fires. Fingers crossed for a speedy resolution (and regaining power). Sending you some good vibes!!
1. When you were a kid, did you go trick-or-treating? Yes, and like you, we went alone (with friends, not adults). We let our boys go with their friends from the time they were about 10 but they just stayed on one street that is always loaded with families. And it’s a small town so they knew nearly everyone on the street.
2. Would you rather go to a Halloween haunted house, or a pumpkin patch? Pumpkin patches here are a bit different because they’re usually at apple orchards so they have farm stands with baked goods and petting zoos and haunted hay rides, etc. And it’s definitely not warm. HAHA! For younger kids, I’d pick the pumpkin patch. For myself, I’d take the haunted house but I’m not really one to be scared. I can definitely be startled, though!
3. Your favorite scary movie? Same. Isn’t that funny? A friend and I were just discussing that this week and I said the Shining. And though this isn’t technically a scary movie, I remember almost climbing up the back of my seat in the Terminator when Sarah is moving through the machinery at the end and the Terminator’s metal fingers are clawing at her legs. I’ve never been able to stand that (even people running up the stairs with someone grabbing at their feet). It’s weird but true. HAHA!
4. Speaking of scary movies, how would you fare if Michael Myers were in hot pursuit? Totally fine. That dude is like zombie slow! Even with my sketchy cardio, I think I could out WALK him. Also, he’s pretty relentless but I think I’d counter with some significant fire power and, not to be gross, but finish the job with an ax decapitation. It’s hard to come back from that. When people do a couple of shots to the chest and then turn their backs to have a conversation? I think they kind of deserve what they get. HAHA! This is all fictionally speaking, of course!
5. Orange or black eyeshadow? Orange, for sure.
