So…what is the Monday Poll?
Excellent question! It isn’t, contrary to its name, an actual poll, like with little clicky buttons. It’s just a list of five more or less random questions I’ve been posting on this blog every Monday morning for the past quadrillion years (since 2007). I love reading your answers, and it helps me get my week off to a good start. ?
1. One must-have product you keep in your purse at all times (besides your wallet, keys and phone)?
I would love to answer this with something quirky, like a tube of green paint or an ice cream scoop (both of which have been in my little black backpack lately), but the real answer is something decidedly more practical — an asthma inhaler. So not exciting, but necessary!
2. What’s your favorite pie?
Still trying to figure this out, which is why I recently embarked upon what I call “The Epic Pie Quest of Fall/Winter 2020.” It’s why I tried making lemon meringue pie for the first time last week.
As of this morning, I’m about 80% sure my favorite’s pecan pie, but I’m leaving wiggle room in case I find something I like more.
3. One thing you still have from your childhood?
Three scars, none of which I remember getting. I’ve just always remembered having them, but I’ve been told how they appeared. Two of them are small oval-shaped marks, one on each shoulder, which were from immunizations I got as a kid, and I also have a tiny divot on my forehead that I got from chicken pox when I was four.
4. Eyeliner: purple or bronze?
BOTH! But if I had to choose one, I’d go with a dark plummy purple.
5. What color was your prom dress?
It was a black skirt with a white top, which was surprisingly conservative now that I think about it. I took a lot of fashion risks when I was in high school and dressed kinda wacky, so I’m shocked I didn’t go with something colorful.
6. Least favorite color?
Baby poo green, blah!
7. What’s the weirdest word in the English language?
Fork. No question about it. Because when you say “fork” over and over again, it starts to sound like nonsense. Fork, fork, fork, fork, fork!
8. Stairs or elevator?
Stairs, because 1) I wear tennis shoes everywhere now so my footwear is no longer an obstacle (a legit issue for me back in the early aughts), and 2) I gotta get my steps in whenever and wherever I can.
9. A makeup skill you’re pretty good at?
Dainty winged liner is my jam, lady. I can do it pretty quickly on the fly!
Your friendly neighborhood beauty addict,
Karen

Good idea to keep a nail clippers with a file with you, Rachel. I’m going to add that to my purse ASAP!
Hope you had a nice weekend. Did you do anything fun?
It was a nice weekend here in North Dakota. We got our fence almost completed, and I planted some hydrangeas that I found for 1/2 off at Lowe’s. I also went shopping for pumpkins to put out on the front steps (and eventually roast the pumpkin seeds, yum!) and put away my summer planters. Fall is here!
I love hydrangeas. Back when I lived in SF I used to see them all the time because they love the foggy, cool weather. What colors did you get?
Mine are pink right now. I read that you can make the soil acidic or alkaline to keep the colors bright or change their color so I will have to look into that next year!
Yes, you can do that! Back in the day people used to add pennies to the soil, but now that’s no longer the case apparently according to this article from The SF Chronicle.
Happy Monday! I hope you had a lovely weekend! 🙂

Happy Monday to you too. 🙂 Just dropped off Connor Claire for her first day of in-school preschool (it’s time), and I’m having all of the feels.
ALSO, WAIT… I can’t believe you don’t like pie! What is it about pie that you don’t enjoy? Inquiring minds want to know.
Oh, I’m so bummed that I’m just seeing this today. 🙁 Ugh, I would have been right here for you with all the feels!!! I hope that she had a fabulous first week (even though I’m sure it’s been super-rough for you).
You’ll be horrified to hear that I really don’t like sugar, candy or desserts at all. I know… how am I not super skinny? Sadly, I overeat lots of other things (like bread, cheese and pasta!). I really only have dessert if I’m being polite. It’s not that I think it’s bad tasting or that I’d refuse to eat it; I’ve had lots of good pies/cakes/desserts. It’s just not something I ever really want. Not complaining since I get plenty more calories than I need already. 🙂

Speaking of asthma inhalers, has the air gotten clearer near you? I know you are much closer to the Glass fire.
Hi! The air has gotten much better in the past couple days, thank goodness. The end of last week was rough, though. Ash was falling from the sky and it was hot and smokey.
I thought of you this morning because I’ve been obsessing over low-impact cardio and dagnabbit, I really want a Concept2 rowing machine. Are you loving yours?!
Still loving my Concept 2 rower. That thing is getting good use in this household. When Dear Daughter comes by she hops on for 20-30 minute hauls. Dear Husband uses it. When the air was really smoky I Zoomed with my trainer and she taught me how to do intervals on it mixed with push-ups, squats, k-bell swings and other weight work. I pretty much thought I was going to like this thing, but I love it a whole lot more.
Here’s hoping the air continues to get better and that fire season ends quickly. Predicting a bit of rain this weekend. I am sincerely hoping there is NO lightning along with it.
That workout with your trainer sounds so fun! Someday I’ll have a rower too, and that day will be a glorious (and low-impact) day. 🙂
I’ve been noticing dew drops in the morning so the air up here has been wetter, especially in the morning. Going to keep my fingers crossed for RAIN!

3. One thing you still have from your childhood? When I was born, I received a “baby rattle” that consisted of a mother of pearl ring about 2 inches in diameter with a large, sterling silver puffed heart attached to it. The heart had my name and birthdate engraved on it in beautiful flowing script. Obviously the “rattle” was symbolic and not meant for baby to actually use. The ring is long gone, but I still have the heart. I like to wear it on a long silver chain.
4. Eyeliner: purple or bronze? I have dark green eyes and love a deep purple liner.
5. What color was your prom dress? I didn’t go to prom.

Mercedes 300SL gullwing rubber sandbox toy car. My friend Spewgie has the red one. For our two-years-of-age portraits our parents had to pry us apart. And we are wearing our blue sailor suit dresses and holding our Mercedes. Mercedeses. Whatevs. Too cute.

Private girls’ school. No prom.
6. Least favorite color?

Recombobulation. My city’s airport has a Recombobulation Area. For if you’re discombobulated. Right after the TSA search. For tying your shoes and stowing your laptop. And getting ready to fill your drinking water bottle at the bubbler.
In Wisconsinese, a bubbler is a drinking water fountain.

9. A makeup skill you’re pretty good at?
Winged eyeliner.
1. One must-have product you keep in your purse at all times (besides your wallet, keys and phone)? Lip balm. 8. Stairs or elevator? Stairs, but my preschooler loves the elevator
9. A makeup skill you’re pretty good at? Lol I use to be good at it all not so much now!
