So…what is the Monday Poll?
Excellent question! It isn’t, contrary to its name, an actual poll, like with little clicky buttons. It’s just a list of more or less random questions I’ve been posting on this blog every Monday morning for the past quadrillion years (since 2007).
1. What are your pieces of everyday jewelry?
My wedding and engagement rings, and a pair of dainty gold dangling earrings that El Hub gave me for Christmas eons ago. I like how the earring clasps feel super secure (so I’m less likely to lose them), and how lightweight they feel. I can’t do heavy jewelry anymore! If I feel any weight at all on my ears or around my neck or wrists, it’s just not happening.
2. Have you ever made a pie from scratch?
Oh my gosh, yes. I’ve tried several times and each and every outcome was disastrous. I’m a decently competent baker, so I don’t know why pie eludes me. Maybe I just haven’t found the right recipe yet?
3. Are you trying a new beauty products this week?
Yes! I’ve got an Ilia lipstick on deck, some hair products by dpHue, skin care from REN and a few bits and bobs from Jane Iredale (my newest obsession).
4. Have you ever painted someone else’s toes?
I have! Connor enjoys the occasional pedicure, and many moons ago, I painted El Hub’s toes in this post.
5. What’s one thing you love about where you live?
The abundance of wild animals. Everyday I see something interesting — birds, deer, turkeys!
6. Socks or no socks?
Socks, because my feet are always cold, but if I could get away with not wearing socks, I’d ditch them in a heartbeat because my sock drawer stresses me out.
7. What eyeliner colors do you wear the most?
Black and brown lately. I also go through phases where I’m into plum and gunmetal gray.
8. Did you ever collect stickers?
Heck, yeah! My sticker collection was my pride and joy in elementary school, especially my collection of scratch-and-sniff stickers.
9. Which one would you rather wear: a fancy dress or a fancy tuxedo?
Fancy dress, please. The most elaborate one you can find, ideally with pockets.
Your friendly neighborhood beauty addict,
Karen

P.P.S. Happy Monday, sweet girl! 🤗 I hope your weekend was restful and relaxing. This week will bring us all great things, I just know it. Take extra good care of yourself today, OK?

1. What are your pieces of everyday jewelry? – A necklace with a nazar boncuk (evil eye bead) that I never take of. If I don’t forget to put them on also my engagement and wedding rings (I am bad in wearing them regularly).
2. Have you ever made a pie from scratch? – Yes, many times. I like those pies much more than the ones made with store bought crust.

5. What’s one thing you love about where you live? – The positive energy because nothing brings NYC down 🙂
6. Socks or no socks? – In winters yes, else no.
7. What eyeliner colors do you wear the most? – Grey, plum and brown. It usually depends on my outfit.
8. Did you ever collect stickers? – Yes, but I was always afraid to swap them because I loved them that much.
9. Which one would you rather wear: a fancy dress or a fancy tuxedo? – Always a fancy dress. I just need more occasions.
Hi Jana,
Do you have a pie crust recipe that you like? I need something delicious and relatively easy!
1. What are your pieces of everyday jewelry? My gold wedding band, an amber necklace that Zack brought me back from his trip to The Baltics 5 years ago and a pair of pearl earrings.
2. Have you ever made a pie from scratch? Yes and it was a disaster. I am not of the baking type.
3. Are you trying a new beauty products this week? Yes, skin care. Weleda Skin Food. My skin has been parched since we put the heat on in the house.
4. Have you ever painted someone else’s toes? No.
5. What’s one thing you love about where you live? My deck and backyard. My house could blow up and I wouldn’t care as long as my can still have the deck to sit out on and stare at the yard.
6. Socks or no socks? Socks now. I have a mild case of ranauds and my toes can turn purple when it gets cold, fingers too.
7. What eyeliner colors do you wear the most? Dark brown.
8. Did you ever collect stickers? no.
9. Which one would you rather wear: a fancy dress or a fancy tuxedo? I love a pretty party dress, especially a black sheath. That’s my jam.
Hope you had a good weekend. Stay safe and be well.
We’ve had the heat on in the house, too, and my lips and skin are so dry. I feel ya, girl! Hope the Weleda works out for you. I’ve tried a few of their moisturizers before and remember liking them.
Oh, my gosh on El Hub’s toes! That post/the comments cracked me up; it’s the first time I’d seen it. HAHA! I don’t have much pie advice; I’ve always been told butter and water have to be super cold, and then use a pastry blender. I’ve had good luck doing that but am not very into pie, so it’s not worth the effort for me. 🙂
1. What are your pieces of everyday jewelry? Wedding and engagement ring, diamond studs that the Hubs gave me on our first Christmas and a watch.
2. Have you ever made a pie from scratch? Yes, but not often.
3. Are you trying a new beauty products this week? Does it count if I tried it on someone else? I got one of the boys some OGX hair oil sprays (an argan and a coconut). His ends get a bit dry.
4. Have you ever painted someone else’s toes? Probably, but a specific time/person isn’t coming to mind.
5. What’s one thing you love about where you live? The view. I’m a sucker for lakes/mountains.
6. Socks or no socks? Always socks!
7. What eyeliner colors do you wear the most? Brown, pretty much exclusively.
8. Did you ever collect stickers? Yes, for sure, in elementary school. But I never had a real collection. We used to trade and cover our notebooks, etc, in them.
9. Which one would you rather wear: a fancy dress or a fancy tuxedo? Fancy dress. I don’t think I’d be able to stand a tie.
I’m stoked that your son is open to using a hair oil spray. If he needs more moisture maybe try a thicker leave-in conditioner. Odele makes one that’s pretty good, and the scent is gender neutral. I get it at Target for like 10 bucks!
Thanks! I’ll check it out. I gave him some Pureology that’s much too heavy-duty for me, but I think he needs an application lesson. He’s definitely open. If by open you mean freaking out in a horrified way when I tried to spray some on his ends, and then saying how he was going to be harassed mercilessly by his hockey teammates when he walked into the locker room smelling like coconut. After finally relenting, he then told me 10 times that it didn’t look any different (despite all of us saying it did). We tried one more time when he showered after his game and then he complained it looked greasy (his hair was wet, it’s dry oil and I only sprayed the ends). Fine, kid. Have dry, frizzy, unhealthy looking ends. Killing me. HAHA!
1. What are your pieces of everyday jewelry? Wedding ring set, a Celtic necklace with a small amethyst stone in it.
2. Have you ever made a pie from scratch? All the time – after several fails. Recipe to follow.
3. Are you trying new beauty products this week? Me Time Botanicals Clay Play exfoliant/cleanser (I love their Glo Getter serum for breakout-prone skin and Berry Bright mask)
4. Have you ever painted someone else’s toes? Nope – not my own either.
5. What’s one thing you love about where you live? Lots of forest preserves with trails for biking.
6. Socks or no socks? Socks, but preferably slippers. We have hardwood floors in our 110-year-old Mission Bungalow and the floors get COLD.
7. What eyeliner colors do you wear the most? A gold/brown from Mad Hippie.
8. Did you ever collect stickers? Not as a kid, but I talked the lady at my dentist out of one last month when I had to have a crown done ($800 I better get a sticker!)
9. Which one would you rather wear: a fancy dress or a fancy tuxedo? Dress.
Brigid’s foolproof pie crust.
4 cups all-purpose flour
1 3/4 cups shortening
1 tablespoon sugar
2 teaspoons salt
1 tablespoon vinegar (yes, vinegar)
1 egg
1/2 cup VERY cold water
Add flour, shortening, sugar, and salt to a large bowl. Get out your pastry cutter.
Mix flour and shortening with the pastry cutter until it looks nice and crumbly, crumbs should be much small than the size of peas. In a small bowl, whisk together the vinegar, egg, and water.
Add to the flour mixture, stirring in till well-moistened.
Shape it with clean hands into a ball of pastry dough. (Don’t overhandle.)
Divide the dough into four equal-size balls.
Wrap each ball with plastic and refrigerate for at least 15 minutes before using. These will keep a week in the fridge or a couple months in the freezer in freezer bags.
To use, sprinkle some flour on waxed paper. Sprinkle some more flour on top then roll out, adding more flour if necessary to keep from sticking to your rolling pin. Place in a greased pie pan. You can just up-end the rolled crust right off the waxed paper on top of the pie pan. Peel off the paper then crimp the edges.
Ahh, thank you Brigid! Do you blind bake the crust?
I only blind bake if it’s a custard, pumpkin, or pudding pie (or a quiche with a fair amount of liquid). For a fruit pie – no, I don’t. This works great with my apple pie which is the favorite (the grandkids don’t much like rhubarb pie though I really do).
OK, thank you. Funny thing about rhubarb pie… I didn’t like it at all until recently. I always thought it was too tart, but now I loooove a tart pie!
1. What are your pieces of everyday jewelry? Small lightweight earring and my watch. Because of my job I rarely wear my wedding & engagement rings. I love jewelry though and have quite a collection
2. Have you ever made a pie from scratch? Few times but my husband doesn’t like fruit so it’s not a popular dessert in my house
3. Are you trying a new beauty products this week? Not really – I’m pretty set
4. Have you ever painted someone else’s toes? No – I can barely paint my own
5. What’s one thing you love about where you live? It’s fairly rural and we are by a river. Houses are spread out so it’s quiet.
6. Socks or no socks? Socks for warmth but I prefer bare feet
7. What eyeliner colors do you wear the most? Brown & black
8. Did you ever collect stickers? Sort of – never as obsessed as most girls at the time
9. Which one would you rather wear: a fancy dress or a fancy tuxedo? Dress – I dress very casual for work so I love to dress up
I love jewelry too but hardly ever wear it because I always lose things! I especially love vintage jewelry.
Hope you’re having a great Monday so far!
1. What are your pieces of everyday jewelry?
Unless I’m going out, just a pair of post earrings to match whatever I’m wearing and a pair of tiny ball earrings for my upper hole.
2. Have you ever made a pie from scratch?
Yes, lots of times. I like a shortening/butter mix for the crust, for optimal taste and texture. A cream cheese-based crust is also yummy. If you’re having trouble with traditional pie, though, you might want to try a free-form galette.
3. Are you trying a new beauty products this week?
Hopefully several, if my Sephora sale order comes in.
4. Have you ever painted someone else’s toes?
Yes, my girls used to love that.
5. What’s one thing you love about where you live?
Flowers for every season. (And no driving in the snow.)
6. Socks or no socks?
No socks.
7. What eyeliner colors do you wear the most?
I hardly wear it any more. If I do, it’s the Shiseido Microliner in black.
8. Did you ever collect stickers?
I was totally into the scratch and sniff stickers, too.
9. Which one would you rather wear: a fancy dress or a fancy tuxedo?
Fancy dress, but not too fancy. I’m a little black dress kind of girl.
1. What are your pieces of everyday jewelry? I stopped wearing everyday jewelry when I turned 39. I started doing yoga everyday and just felt too encumbered to wear it. Once in a great while I’ll put on my wedding band. I have two recent jewelry purchases however. I bought necklaces with those large initial pendants–a J for me and an M for my son. I go through fits of wearing those every day for weeks and not wearing them.
2. Have you ever made a pie from scratch? Yes and frankly it’s hit or miss.
3. Are you trying a new beauty products this week? Not sure. I woke up at midnight and barfed–I suspect food poisoning. Working from home today and I can’t think of new makeup yet.
4. Have you ever painted someone else’s toes? Yes, friends toes
5. What’s one thing you love about where you live? being near the ocean. close enough I could walk if I was feeling energetic
6. Socks or no socks? I’d like to go sock-free. But I have to have socks on at night to help me fall asleep.
7. What eyeliner colors do you wear the most? nude
8. Did you ever collect stickers? oh yes. Does Connor collect stickers?
9. Which one would you rather wear: a fancy dress or a fancy tuxedo? fancy dress!
She doesn’t yet! She collects Legos. LOL!
1. What are your pieces of everyday jewelry?
My wedding band, gold spiral hoops from Hello Adorn in my bottom piercings, a tiny diamond stud in my second piercing (just my left ear), and my fitbit. When I’m going into the office daily I usually wear my engagement ring and a lightweight mesh bracelet.
2. Have you ever made a pie from scratch?
I’ve helped my husband – it’s the only way he does pies! He’s really good at them and he does them for Thanksgiving and Christmas for our families.
3. Are you trying a new beauty products this week?
I got Huna’s Nourish Skin Balm in my Alltrue box last week and I’ve been incorporating it into my hand/cuticle care. So far I’m loving it!
4. Have you ever painted someone else’s toes?
No, I don’t love feet. I’m only just getting to the point where I kinda enjoy getting a pedicure. I get them because I don’t love doing them on myself.
5. What’s one thing you love about where you live?
I love my weekend neighborhood walks. I live a few blocks off of the main street in my neighborhood in a large city, and we have a routine to take a walk on Sat/Sun mornings to grab coffee, go to the bakery and neighborhood shops for snacks/groceries/things we can’t get at Target (emphasis on snacks).
6. Socks or no socks?
No socks. To the point where I’ll put on slippers and forget about socks and my feet will be frozen.
7. What eyeliner colors do you wear the most?
Brown and plum
8. Did you ever collect stickers?
Do I EVER. So many!!
9. Which one would you rather wear: a fancy dress or a fancy tuxedo?
Fancy dress, please!
Is your hubby willing to share his pie recipe? I need some really good pie in my life!
His crust is from The Joy of Cooking (the butter crust), but his tweak is taking the amount of water it calls for and using about half water, half vodka (sometime less vodka, but enough water so that liquid amount equals the original amount of water if that makes sense). The vodka evaporates faster and makes for a flakier crust.
Method has even been proven with GF flour blends (C4C and King Arthur Flour are the two we’ve used) and dairy free butter for me as he’ll use those to make pies/quiches I can eat!
Favorite fillings, also from Joy of Cooking, are pecan, bourbon, bourbon chocolate, chocolate pecan, and just about any berry.
Somewhere I have a pecan pie bar recipe that was easily modified to be gluten/dairy free, too – I’ll dig for it and link it! It’s great for when you want pie but want it *fast.*
Okay, I found it much faster than I thought! Here are the bars, and if you want to get *real* jazzy, melt some chocolate to drizzle over top. I subbed KAF gf flour blend and Earth’s Best buttery sticks and you’d never know, so I’d imagine if they were that good with fake butter and no wheat they’d be freaking out of this world with real butter, LOL
https://www.thecountrycook.net/southern-pecan-pie-bars/
OMG! These look AMAZING. Thank you for your GF sub recommendations! I cannot wait to make this (and I might even try this afternoon, hahaha).
I’ve been wanting an excuse to buy that book; I think I have it! Thanks to both you and your partner for letting me in on the tips and tricks. I can now go into pie making this season with confidence. Wish me luck!
Do it!! It’s such a great book – we had JoC growing up and my mom has made sure my brothers and I have them when we left the house. The other thing my husband says is pie crust wants to be COLD. He makes it the day before and chills it, then rolls it out the day he uses it. He also has very warm hands which melts the butter, but he’s had the best results this way.
And the bars are SO fast and easy, totally a good Tuesday afternoon bake! 😉
YES! If there was one big lesson I learned from working at the bakery it’s that warm dough = @sshole dough. The colder you can get it, the better! Good call to chill it overnight.
I can’t believe I’m saying this because my last few experiences with pie have been traumatic, but I’m almost excited to try again!
1. What are your pieces of everyday jewelry?
Mainly just my engagement and wedding ring. I have a pair of gold and diamond huggie earrings that closely match the design but I switch up my jewelry quite often.
2. Have you ever made a pie from scratch?
No, I’m not very interested in baking desserts tbh. I enjoy cooking though.
3. Are you trying a new beauty products this week?
Actually, yes. Yesterday I finally picked up a Chanel rouge allure ink in “choquant” a berry red. Initially I wanted “luxuriant” but they didn’t have it. I’m hoping the formula works for me as I have so many issues with lip products these days!
4. Have you ever painted someone else’s toes?
I do my moms every now and then.
5. What’s one thing you love about where you live?
It’s a very nice area. Safe.
6. Socks or no socks?
Usually socks unless I’m extremely hot!
7. What eyeliner colors do you wear the most?
Brown and black
8. Did you ever collect stickers?
As a child, of course. I’m sure I was crazy for stickers! Lol
9. Which one would you rather wear: a fancy dress or a fancy tuxedo?
Fancy dress, please!
Gotta love feeling safe in your neighborhood. It’s a good feeling! I love that aspect about mine, too.
1. What are your pieces of everyday jewelry? Wedding band (engagement ring if I’m working…but I don’t wear it at home because I scratch the kids with it), 3 pairs of small earrings, 2 bead bracelets my 7 year old daughter made 💖
2. Have you ever made a pie from scratch? No…I struggle with cakes and pies. I’m pretty good at making cookies🍪. I’m hoping I can try one of the recipes the nice ladies on here are sharing…an “easy” pie crust recipe would be awesome.
3. Are you trying a new beauty products this week? No. I’m trying to “shop” my stash right now
4. Have you ever painted someone else’s toes? Yes…my little girl loves it
5. What’s one thing you love about where you live? I love where my house is located…we have an acre and plenty of room for the kids and dogs to play.

8. Did you ever collect stickers? Yes…I covered my dresser with them
9. Which one would you rather wear: a fancy dress or a fancy tuxedo? Fancy Dress…And I’m gonna need somewhere to wear it!
I’m going to try the crust recipes too! Hoping for some good luck!
1. What are your pieces of everyday jewelry?
I don’t wear any jewelry every day, but I often have my grandpa’s ring on a necklace that I keep with me. (I couldn’t bear the thought of it getting resized, so I just have it on a simple chain.)
2. Have you ever made a pie from scratch?
Yes. Crust seems to elude me, which is why I just buy crust now and make filling from scratch.
3. Are you trying a new beauty products this week?
Not this week!
4. Have you ever painted someone else’s toes?
Yes.
5. What’s one thing you love about where you live?
We have a famous wild turkey named Carl.
6. Socks or no socks?
SOCKS, especially fuzzy ones. Moderate Reynaud’s so socks ARE A MUST!
7. What eyeliner colors do you wear the most?
Black.
8. Did you ever collect stickers?
I did and still do. I attach them to handwritten letters, envelopes, packages…
9. Which one would you rather wear: a fancy dress or a fancy tuxedo?
Hm, I’m always really cold so I’m going to be exceedingly contrary and go with a tailored to perfection tuxedo with tails just because I say so. No frilly shirt, but a regular buttondown with maybe a little ribbon secured with a brooch around the neck, a waistcoat (not cummerbund. No one looks good in those dumb cummerbunds) and brogues with a tiny heel. Sparkles in my hair is a must.
I essentially live in my own land.
I’m relieved that you said no to the cummerbunds. We had to wear a sequined one for our band uniform in high school! I’m still traumatized. LOL
The boys in my high school dance choir had to wear bright blue sequined ones with white shirt and black trousers. They looked like fancy cigarettes. Boys in mixed choir wore simple black ones under a black jacket and black trousers. (Imagine sausages in blankets.) I don’t think anyone looks good in them. Can we officially ditch those crazy things and just wear waistcoats?
YES, PLEASE!
1. What are your pieces of everyday jewelry? A thin rose gold band I use as a wedding ring, and my nose ring. I need to repierce my ears.
2. Have you ever made a pie from scratch? Yes. Every holiday season. Pumpkin, pecan, apple, chocolate cream.
3. Are you trying a new beauty products this week? No. I’m going to my Grandma’s 95 th birthday party this weekend so I’m sticking with products I know and love.
4. Have you ever painted someone else’s toes? Yes! My two daughters. I painted my husband’s once when he was sleeping on the sofa, it was hilarious. My sister’s when she was pregnant.
5. What’s one thing you love about where you live? The abundance of produce available in the Central Valley of CA.
6. Socks or no socks? If it’s warm, no socks. If it’s chilly, socks.
7. What eyeliner colors do you wear the most? Dark brown pencil. My liquid liner skills are sad.
8. Did you ever collect stickers? Yes! I loved my stickers! I wish I still had them.
9. Which one would you rather wear: a fancy dress or a fancy tuxedo? Dress. Form fitting with fancy sleeves and pockets.
Stephanie! Please share your pie recipe! I really want to conquer pie.
1. What are your pieces of everyday jewelry? I love jewelry and have an extensive collection of fine jewelry so I’m always wearing a couple pieces (or more!) What I wear just depends on my outfit, where I’’m going, etc. The one item I always wear, though, is a pair of earrings. My ears were pierced when I was a tiny tot so I feel naked without something in my ears. I guess you could say earrings are my everyday jewelry although I seldom where the same pair two days in a row.
2. Have you ever made a pie from scratch? Yes, indeed. As a child I loved helping my grandma and my great grandma make pies so I grew up making them from scratch. This was back when there weren’t frozen pies or ready made pie crusts. I haven’t made pies, though, in a million years because my husband absolutely hates them.

8. Did you ever collect stickers? No. Stickers weren’t a thing when I was a child.

1. What are your pieces of everyday jewelry? Just earrings-it’s easier for work.
2. Have you ever made a pie from scratch? No, but someday!
3. Are you trying a new beauty products this week? Aquaphor Healing Ointment Baby- it works wonders on cracked/chapped hands!

1. What are your pieces of everyday jewelry?
Wedding band. Often hoop earrings.
2. Have you ever made a pie from scratch?
At one point in my life, I had the crust recipe from Joy of Cooking memorized and made pies constantly. Usually to give away left and right to friends or at work after having a slice or two. I loved having a marble slab or counter but could do it anywhere. I found a pastry cutter essential. The ice cubes in the water is pretty crucial too. But it’s so, so easy once you do it a lot. I was encouraged by the constant pie-making (cherry esp.) of my grandma and great aunts. If they could do it, so could I! Chicken pot pie was especially fun to make.
3. Are you trying a new beauty products this week?
Ilia skin tint oil. It’s pretty good!
4. Have you ever painted someone else’s toes?
Sure, lots. Not recently, but when I had more time on my hands!
5. What’s one thing you love about where you live?
It’s warm and safe.
6. Socks or no socks?
If I could live without socks forever, I’d be sooooo happy. It’s 40 degrees here and I’m still wearing slides and flip flops as much as possible. But alas, it’s not the most practical choice.
7. What eyeliner colors do you wear the most?
Probably brown, but I have a soft spot for loden green.
8. Did you ever collect stickers?
Sure, as a kid!
9. Which one would you rather wear: a fancy dress or a fancy tuxedo?
Bring on the dress!
Happy week, Karen, may all your pies be delicious! You can do it!!
1. What are your pieces of everyday jewelry?
Don’t really have any. I like to switch it up.
2. Have you ever made a pie from scratch?
Yes and it wasn’t much better than one with the pre-made crust that you just unroll into the pie plate.
3. Are you trying a new beauty products this week?
If I get around to it, several: That’s Taupe palette by Colourpop, Frank Body Perky Sculpting Body Hydrator, and Southern Belle Volume-Boosting Root Lifter by Drybar.
