So…what is the Monday Poll?
Excellent question! It isn’t, contrary to its name, an actual poll, like with little clicky buttons. It’s just a list of more or less random questions I’ve been posting on this blog every Monday morning for the past quadrillion years (since 2007).
1. Pick a type of eyeliner to wear today — sharp and crisp or smokey and smudged?
I like both, but I’ll go with smokey and smudged on the upper lash line today. It’s easier for me to do and I can layer some cream shadow on top!
2. How often do you do meal prep at the start of the week?
Rarely! In theory I like it, but I tried it once or twice and found it isn’t my style. I like having the freedom to make whatever I’m craving on a given day. Plus, I get tired of eating the same thing over and over again.
3. Have you ever been picked for jury duty?
I did jury duty once for a trial when I was in my 30s . I don’t remember much other than waiting around for long periods of time for things to start. I think we were paid like $8 a day for our service at the end of it? There was a lot of sitting and I’d get very antsy.
4. What’s your secret to velvety soft skin?
Hmm, for me two things help a lot. The first is choosing a gentle cleanser that doesn’t strip my skin. Oil-based and creamy cleansers are my BFFs! The second is applying whatever hydrator I’m using on damp skin shortly after I step out of the shower.
5. What makeup brands were popular when you were in high school?
I remember Clinique was *the* brand all the girls wanted to wear. I also remember Revlon, Covergirl, Maybelline, Max Factor and Wet ‘n’ Wild being a big deal, too. Oh, and I can’t forget Corn Silk and Coty for face powder!
Well hello there and happy, happy Monday. How’s your day going? I feel a little disorganized right now, but you know, once I make a short list, everything’s gonna be OK.
I hope you had a wonderful weekend and that you’re feeling rested and ready for what’s ahead. I have a feeling that good things are waiting around the corner for us all!
Your friendly neighborhood beauty addict,
Karen

Sharp and crisp!
2. How often do you do meal prep at the start of the week?
A lot more now that I am back to work and have the twins to think about. I often make them a casserole type dish that has pasta, meat, and veggies all in the same bowl so that it’s easy to serve and heat up. They are kind of picky now so anything they will eat I am happy about, even if it’s not the most healthy. For myself, the last 3 weeks I have eaten Bruschetta with mozzarella on garlic toast for lunch with the fresh tomatoes from my garden. I’m not usually one to eat the same thing everyday either, but I find myself craving this! Oh and on the weekend I prepare my cold brew for the week.
3. Have you ever been picked for jury duty?
Yes – I had to go there and watch a video about how important jury duty is and then the judge told us the case settled so we didn’t have to actually serve.
4. What’s your secret to velvety soft skin?
SK-II. I apply at every morning and evening after washing my face and before any serum or moisturizer. It’s changed the texture and brightness of my skin for the better!
5. What makeup brands were popular when you were in high school?
Revlon and Clinique. Do you remember Revlon being sold at the counter at JCPenney? And Baby Soft and Exclamation for perfume.

5. What makeup brands were popular when you were in high school? coty and maybelline.
Brownies always count
Thank you. I knew I was on the right track. lol
1. Pick a type of eyeliner to wear today – sharp and crisp or smokey and smudged?
Smokey and smudged. More room for error, lol.
2. How often do you do meal prep at the start of the week?
Not often enough.
3. Have you ever been picked for jury duty?
I’ve been summoned, but not picked.
4. What’s your secret to velvety soft skin?
My grandmother.😄 She barely had a wrinkle when she died at age 78, and her skin was baby soft. I’m so thankful I inherited that from her.
5. What makeup brands were popular when you were in high school?
Oh, Clinique, for sure! We had a combined middle/high school (small town), and in the lower grades, we went through a phase of being obsessed with Lip Smackers. I think we thought we were being ironic, like we were really ‘too old’ for them, but here we were being funny and seeing who could find the weirdest flavor or whatever.
I love making a short list for the day! It really helps keep me focused. Post-It brand makes a Today’s Top Three sticky pad that I like to use for this. I keep the note right on my computer.
1. Pick a type of eyeliner to wear today – sharp and crisp or smokey and smudged?
I’m wearing sharp Urban Decay liquid liner in Oily Slick, kind of a gunmetal color.
2. How often do you do meal prep at the start of the week?
Formally, never, but I’ll often make something and freeze portions for later that effectively ends up being lunch prep.
3. Have you ever been picked for jury duty?
Nope!
4. What’s your secret to velvety soft skin?
I’m allergic to life, so Vanicream everything and topicals for rosacea.
5. What makeup brands were popular when you were in high school?
I grew up in a rural area far from department stores and Sephora, so almost everyone used drugstore stuff. I remember liking Jane cosmetics a lot.
1. Pick a type of eyeliner to wear today – sharp and crisp or smokey and smudged?
Smokey and smudged always for me. That way when I mess up it’s just part of the look!
2. How often do you do meal prep at the start of the week?
I don’t pre chop and measure but I do take stock of what I have in the fridge/freezer/pantry and plan lunch and dinner for at least the first half of the week.
3. Have you ever been picked for jury duty?
No. I’ve had a couple of brushes with being picked. The very first time I was called for duty (I was fresh out of college) I made it to the interview portion. I remember going into a courtroom. The defendant was present. The attorneys and maybe the judge asked us some questions. I was not chosen but I was fascinated with the process. The other time I was chosen the case settled. I have jury duty on Sept. 5 so we shall see!
4. What’s your secret to velvety soft skin?
I keep things simple these days. I also like an oil cleanser (DHC) and a good moisturizer (I’m using YTTP Polypeptide-121 Future Cream and I like it). In the past I exfoliated but since my eczema flare-ups this past winter I haven’t gotten back on that train.
5. What makeup brands were popular when you were in high school?
When I went shopping with my mom to ye old makeup counter at Rich’s (Atlanta folks will know) I was definitely a Clinique girl. I also had a friend in high school who was brilliant at makeup. She worked at the Lancôme Counter at Macy’s so some friends and I would visit her and try on stuff. I don’t think I bought much though. It seemed like a “grown up” brand. At the drug store it was Wet ‘n’ Wild and Cover Girl.
1. Pick a type of eyeliner to wear today – sharp and crisp or smokey and smudged? Smokey and smudged, but it may have started out with the intent of sharp and crisp.
2. How often do you do meal prep at the start of the week? Sunday, I usually make a big pot of something vegetarian, soup or stew, etc., with beans and grains and put it in little freezer containers for the nights I’m serving the carnivores in the house. Then I chop up a bunch of veggies for salads and stir-fries.
3. Have you ever been picked for jury duty? Several times and I’m always dismissed because I’m working in the Criminal Justice field after I left flying and got my Ph.D. in one of the forensic sciences)
4. What’s your secret to velvety soft skin? Gentle care/anti-aging. I use products from Me Time Botanicals and Honua Skincare.
5. What makeup brands were popular when you were in high school? Cover Girl, Clinique.
1. Pick a type of eyeliner to wear today – sharp and crisp or smokey and smudged? Sharp & crisp because when I try smoky & smudged I end up looking like I’ve been on 3 day bender
2. How often do you do meal prep at the start of the week? Rarely – I can usually do 2-3 days at a time
3. Have you ever been picked for jury duty? Ugh yes. Last time was during covid & we had to wear a mask all day & it was July. I found a bench in the hall as far away as I could and slowly drank an ice tea all day since I could take the mask off while eating & drinking. Thankfully I’ve never wasn’t picked as a juror & I got to leave at 2
4. What’s your secret to velvety soft skin? Lots of exfoliating & moisturizing
5. What makeup brands were popular when you were in high school? Cover girl, maybelline, revlon. I think the first make up I bought was max factor blush when I was 11
1. Pick a type of eyeliner to wear today – sharp and crisp or smokey and smudged? Smudged, it’s easier, and today needs easy.
2. How often do you do meal prep at the start of the week? Never. I don’t want to eat the same thing every day.
3. Have you ever been picked for jury duty? Yes, and it was awful. Awful. I hated the case, I hated the decision, I hated that there is a fine line between legality and morality. But I did end up making a really good friend, so there’s that.
4. What’s your secret to velvety soft skin? Consistency. I don’t like to use too many things, but I wash and moisturize nightly. It’s how I keep getting mistaken for being in my mid 30’s when I’m really 48.
5. What makeup brands were popular when you were in high school? In the early 90’s, it’s was all about Revlon, Wet’n’wild, and Max Factor. Drug store brands.
1. Pick a type of eyeliner to wear today – sharp and crisp or smokey and smudged? Smokey and smudged as I’ve been using Eye Crayon as both an eyeliner and shadow (usually mauve and/or plum)
2. How often do you do meal prep at the start of the week? I try to when I grocery shop on Sundays, but not in any organized manner.
3. Have you ever been picked for jury duty? No, but I’ve always wanted to. I even worked at the courthouse for almost 15 years and never was picked but had coworkers who would.
4. What’s your secret to velvety soft skin? Right now, I’ve been using basic drug store stuff (as opposed to expensive department store brands), like using Noxema, Olay, Ponds and using Vaseline petroleum jelly with cocoa butter as an eye gel and around my dry patchy areas on my cheeks at night.
5. What makeup brands were popular when you were in high school? Wet n Wild, Max Factor, Maybelline
1. Pick a type of eyeliner to wear today – sharp and crisp or smokey and smudged?
Smokey and smudged is a lot easier, so that, I guess.
2. How often do you do meal prep at the start of the week? Not often, though I do try to buy groceries on the weekend with certain dishes or meals in mind.
3. Have you ever been picked for jury duty? Oh yes! I’ve been on one civil and two criminal cases, and I’ve been called and gone to jury duty so many times I’ve lost count. The trials involved 6-person juries. The civil case was for a minor car accident. The criminal cases were: 1. DWI, and 2. Misdemeanor assault and battery case. It’s partly because of my experience as a juror that the miscarriages of justice I’ve seen (Casey Anthony, T. Cullen Davis, OJ Simpson, Walker Railey, Robert Blake, and the Candace Montgomery case, for example) rankle me so much. I hate that juries are sometimes made up of people so stupid (or possibly corrupt) that they’ll let people literally get away with murder.
4. What’s your secret to velvety soft skin? Using 2% BHA liquid at least a couple of times a week, and using a good moisturizer. I was using Clinique’s gel moisturizer mixed with The Ordinary Plant-Based Squalane, and that worked pretty well. Now that I’m out of that, I’m using The Ordinary Natural Moisturizing Factor with HA, and the Paula’s Choice HA Booster mixed together. I also use a The Ordinary retinol product from time to time.
5. What makeup brands were popular when you were in high school? Same list as yours – Revlon, Almay, Maybelline, Cover Girl, and Clinique for those who could afford it.
