So…what is the Monday Poll?
Excellent question! It isn’t, contrary to its name, an actual poll, like with little clicky buttons. It’s just a list of more or less random questions I’ve been posting on this blog every Monday morning for the past quadrillion years (since 2007).
1. Grossest Halloween candy?
There are so many to choose from, ha ha ha! Smarties, Swedish Fish, Bit o’ Honey, Good & Plenty, Hot Tamales, anything involving licorice… When I was a kid, I’d immediately pick all of those out of my candy stash. So gross!
2. Turtleneck or tights?
I’ll take the tights. I don’t like anything that encloses my neck unless I can immediately take it off! And is it just me, or are turtlenecks always kinda itchy?
3. Do you like trying on paper perfume samples in magazines and catalogs?
You know, even though those samples *never* smell like the perfume in the bottle, I do get a kick out of smelling a sample and trying it on my wrist. Maybe it’s because I grew up reading a ton of magazines, and it always felt like a treat to find a sample between the pages. It still delights me for some reason.
4. A core memory from Halloween from when you were a kid?
I was always going trick or treating with the most random assortment of kids from the neighborhood, and one year, I went with a girl named Peachy. We went to a seemingly regular-looking house with its lights on, knocked on the door and then heard loud, terrifying screams from inside. I remember us running for our lives down the driveway and to the sidewalk. Someone got a kick out of scaring the kids that night, apparently.
5. What are you currently marathoning?
I started the new BBC “Great Expectations”, and it’s super weird! I couldn’t look away, though. Oh, on the weekend, I watched the documentary series on David Beckham on Netflix, too. I don’t know a lick about soccer aka football, yet it was compelling enough to watch the entire thing.
Hello and happy, happy Monday, my friend. This morning when I walked Connor to school, I noticed so many trees in our neighborhood changing their colors, and now, when I go for walks outside, there’s a steady crunching of leaves underneath my feet. There’s something magical about this in-between time. I don’t think I’ve noticed it before, but it just feels so calm and cozy. I really love it.
Take it easy and be kind to yourself today, OK?
Your friendly neighborhood beauty addict,
Karen

5. What are you currently marathoning?
Great British Baking Show and What We Do in the Shadows, oh and Kardashians.
1. Grossest Halloween candy? Red Hots or Hot Tamales. I love Bit O’Honey and Swedish Fish. When we lived in The Netherlands I found out what really good licorice tastes like and I love it now.
2. Turtleneck or tights? Neither. I’m always too hot for either of those.
3. Do you like trying on paper perfume samples in magazines and catalogs? No. But if it’s a good one, I’ll open it and stuff in my sweater drawer for a light scent.
4. A core memory from Halloween from when you were a kid? Always having to go out with my older brothers. My oldest brother was always grumpy and grouchy about having to watch me. It got to the point I asked to stay home and hand out candy with my dad.
5. What are you currently marathoning? We just finished watching a K-drama called King The Land about a hotel chain chaebol who falls for one of the company employees. Won’t start anything new until we return from our vacation.
I’m loving the cooler weather. I love when the trees change colors.
1. Grossest Halloween candy?
I don’t have a specific candy I detest. I love fruity and gummies and I love chocolate. But there is a distinctive smell to the pumpkin pail with the mingling of licorice, chocolate, gummies, etc. that I find gross.
2. Turtleneck or tights?
If running tights count-tights! I used to love turtlenecks (same as you, I feel like I can’t escape!) and I wore a lot of skirts in the fall and winter but I just don’t anymore.
3. Do you like trying on paper perfume samples in magazines and catalogs?
Do they still do that?! I haven’t run across one in ages. I used to love them but if it wasn’t a great fragrance it would permeate the mag.
4. What are you currently marathoning?
I’ve been doing a re-watch of Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt. Titus Andromedon is one of my favorite tv characters ever.
It’s cool here and I’m loving it. Have a great week!
1. Grossest Halloween candy? Those candy coated peanuts known as “Boston Baked Beans”. They just tasted burned and disgusting to me.
2. Turtleneck or tights? Turtleneck if it’s a silky fabric. I hate tights or pantyhose in any form.
3. Do you like trying on paper perfume samples in magazines and catalogs? Yes, I always was so disappointed when I got to the hair salon and all the samples in the magazines were gone already.
4. What hair styling products do you use the most? With wintertime and dry itchy scalp I use Wild Child hair oil from Good Medicine Beauty Lab. It’s great as a pre shampoo scalp treatment and to use on frizzy dry ends plus it smells SO good – like a high desert forest. That and their Rain facial cleansing oil are winter staples for me.
5. What are you currently marathoning? Nothing TV wise – currently reading a multi book series of murder mysteries set in Wales.
1. Grossest Halloween candy?
Charleston Chew. (Does it still exist?) I got sick from eating too many of those on Halloween ’85 and I never ate them again.
2. Turtleneck or tights?
Turtleneck because I’m always cold around my neck.
3. Do you like trying on paper perfume samples in magazines and catalogs?
Yes, although they don’t quite capture the true essence of the scent.
4. What hair styling products do you use the most?
I don’t use styling products.
5. What are you currently marathoning?
Letterkenny. It’s a quirky Canadian show.
1. Grossest Halloween candy? For me…anything sour. Sour patch kids😖. My hubby and kiddos love sour candy.
2. Turtleneck or tights? Tights. I feel suffocated in a turtleneck. Years ago I could wear one, but not anymore.
3. Do you like trying on paper perfume samples in magazines and catalogs? No
4. What hair styling products do you use the most? I like Josie Maran Argan Oil, Verb Ghost Oil, and Noughty Hello Curls Primer. I also love Honest Beauty shampoos, conditioners & sprays because they are allergy and asthma friendly.
5. What are you currently marathoning? Stranger Things (again)
1. Grossest Halloween candy? Caramel Apple suckers. I love caramel and I love apple, but the suckers just taste of chemicals.
2. Turtleneck or tights? I love a soft loose cashmere turtleneck. It’s like being enveloped in a warm hug.
3. Do you like trying on paper perfume samples in magazines and catalogs? I haven’t seen those in ages, but back in the day I used to like them.
4. What hair styling products do you use the most? Just shampoo and a light conditioner. I’m a hair care minimalist.
5. What are you currently marathoning? I had a serious back injury when “The Blacklist” was having its final season and missed most of it so I’ve been watching that.
1. Grossest Halloween candy? There’s lots of bad ones out there, especially in those giant mixed bags in the stores. I’d say Good and Plenty, Circus Peanuts, Butterfinger would be the top three. I actually like Hot Tamales and Candy Corn.
2. Turtleneck or tights? Neither most of the time, since I live in a hot climate. I do own two “mock” turtlenecks and two pairs of leggings for winter. I have winter clothes that are really old, since I don’t get much use out of them. I still wear a wool coat I bought around 1989 – it’s really good quality and perfect for winters where it doesn’t get colder than 15 degrees above zero.
3. Do you like trying on paper perfume samples in magazines and catalogs? I like to sniff them but I don’t expect them to accurately reflect the smell of the perfume, especially if it’s been in a magazine in hot trucks for a week or two.
4. What hair styling products do you use the most? Leave-ins, like It’s a 10 Lite.
5. What are you currently marathoning? Nothing. I don’t spend money on special streaming services. I’m so old-school that most of the recent movies I see, I see by getting the Blu-ray from the library. Going to get “Barbie” tomorrow – they’re holding it for me. I saw it in the theater, but I want to see it again to catch the sight gags I missed the first time.
