Maybe that’s because I’m watching movies all the time, LOL!
It’s easier with older movies that run the credits in the beginning of the movie because you kind of have to sit there anyway. I did it the other day with a movie on Netflix I’ve been meaning to watch called Valley of the Dolls.
I KNOW! So late to the party. I had an idea of what the makeup would be like — ya know, ’60s cut creases, all that good stuff — so when the credits were rolling in the beginning I looked for who did the makeup, and it was none other than Ben Nye. The same Ben Nye behind the famous Ben Nye Banana Powder.
If you haven’t seen this movie yet, watch it for the cut-crease action, if nothing else. It’s based on the bestselling book of the same name, and it follows three young women as they make their way through their 20s, and how each of them deals with fame, fortune, success and failure in a patriarchal world. Bottom line: there’s a lot of drugs.
The movie itself… I think it’s a little campy and OTT, but it was released in 1967, so it’s got that ’60s vibe. I love the styling and the fashion and the sets, and I LOVE the makeup, of course. Cut-crease action, winged liner, long lashes and orangey coral lips.
I dunno, but I think it just might inspire me to abandon my 15-minute minimal makeup phase… Who knows?
I’m curious, though. When you watch movies, do you ever check the credits to see who did the makeup? Inquiring minds want to know.

Cool movie! I read the book and saw the movie back in the day! That’s very interesting that Ben Nye did the makeup in the movie. I never pay attention to the movie makeup artist during the credits . But I will now. I love the hairstyles and sound tract from Valley of the dolls!

I do sometimes try to hunt down product lists for certain looks, and I like reading about how makeup on film sets are applied, since it (usually) has to look seamless and natural. I never have. I don’t really know the celebrity makeup artists anyway. But I do notice when the makeup in a movie or show is particularly good.
Well I’ve done it only sometimes but what I do and my sister always looks at me like I’m a creep is comment how is the makeup of the characters. I can’t remember the movie or the actress but I was stunned with her blue smokey eyes.
Yes, I remember this movie and saw it a few times back in the day. That is so interesting that it was Ben Nye for this particular movie as I used to love how the makeup was done especially for Sharon Tate. One of my favorites was checking out the makeup and clothes from Mad Men, a fabulous job I might add. I did not check out the makeup artist, but I will certainly do that now.
Yes! As an MUA, I also look at film credits. One of my fave film MUAs is Kevin James Bennett. I have spoken to him through MUA forums and he is really nice and always willing to impart advice to aspiring and young MUAs. 🙂

The actress I worked with was playing a prostitute with a heart of gold. It was fun to come up with her look!
If I’m really involved with the makeup (as in I watch the makeup more than the actual movie!) then I’ll usually Google around to see who did it. My top favorite makeups in movies were Kiera Knightley’s in Atonement (gorgeous 1930’s style) and that Marie Antoinette Movie from a while back!
I can never sit there long enough to finish the credits so not really. But I do find out who does the makeup in print ads (like in magazines) because sometimes there are just fantastic looks!

If the hubby wouldn’t rush out of the theatre, I would look for the artist!
Funny thing, I’ve only noticed who does the wardrobe which 85% of the time is Edith Head. Still have not seen Valley of the Dolls, and have wanted to see Sharon Tate in that.
I remember my mom made my dad take her to see Valley of the Dolls, and he never forgave her. He said it was the worst movie he’d ever seen, and he never changed his mind. He was seriously traumatized. LMAO
I don’t watch movie credits for the makeup artist. If I’m really interested, I’ll Google it. I admire both beauty and the special effects makeup artists, but I just hate sitting through movie credits.
I’ve never looked to see who does the makeup in a movie. We just saw “Carol” with Cate Blanchett and Rooney Mara today. The makeup and styling was very 50’s. I would have loved to have known who did the makeup, but my husband got up to leave right away when the credits started to roll.
I do, because my sister makes movies and has taught me to always sit through the credits as a matter of respect.
This movie was so-so but the book is great! Are you a reader Karen? If so you should check it out.

I don’t really look for their name in the credits, but certain movies do stand out to me in regards to makeup. I also loved Valley of the Dolls (which I only watched a couple years ago!) and I was just mesmerized by Sharon Tate’s makeup and spent plenty of time googling her afterward. I had no idea it was Ben Nye! I also loved the makeup in the new Man from UNCLE movie from this summer (more 60’s cut creases!). I really love Lady Gaga’s makeup in American Horror Story: Hotel. I actually ended up following her makeup artist on Instagram because of it, @sarahtannomakeup.
Wow, that’s an interesting find about Ben Nye. I just looked him up on IMDb and his credits as a makeup artist are amazing. He even worked on Gone with the Wind and Miracle on 34th Street (holiday theme for ya there given the timing of the post).
I do every single time ! I watch every credit always ! I don’t like when they rush thru on the side screen so they can run to a commercial!
Westmore was another famous makeup artist who also had her own line . But again I am showing my age !
