Reasons to love Saturday
- Waking up without an alarm clock.
- Watching a movie in one uninterrupted block of time. Side note: During the weekdays, it usually takes me days to watch a single movie! I’ll have to catch it in small increments during the week. I don’t know if this is a mom thing, but it didn’t start until after I had Connor.
- S-T-R-E-T-C-H-I-N-G while watching said movie.
- Naps.
- When El Hub makes breakfast in the morning (he’s usually the first one up).
- The sound of a house that’s busy and full of life when everyone’s home; right now Rosie is meowing, Connor is watching “Sesame Street” and El Hub is outside taking care of the yard.
- Running into nice neighbors who I haven’t seen all week.
- Listening to music.
- Browsing Ulta for hair products (on my to-do list for later on today).
- Cleaning. I know, technically NOT fun, but I feel better after things are tidied up a little.
- Catching up with friends who I haven’t talked to all week.
- Working out and not feeling the pressure to get it all done by a certain time.
- Having the time to just look out the window and daydream.
- Getting takeout or going out to dinner.
- Visiting the pet store to see all the adoptable cats and kittens.
- Wearing Old Navy high waisted bike shorts around my house. Honestly, they’re the best.
On an unrelated note, my neighbor came by this morning and gifted me with a random assortment of produce which included a HUGE head of cabbage.

I rarely cook cabbage, so what should I do with it? She suggested quartering it and then sauteing it with olive oil, tomato, salt and pepper. Hmmm! If you have any ideas, let me know.
Onto this week’s reading!
- Fun fact: Makeup artist Sir John began his beauty career at MAC Cosmetics (where he was fired for being late).
- Lancôme’s new fragrance Mille et Une Roses has organic roses grown on brand’s very own French farm.
- The brand NEST is venturing into the wellness space.
- Products to consider if you’re interested in K-beauty.
- Exfoliating your hair is a thing.
So fun!
Speaking of cabbage…
Talk to me, doc.
Have a wonderful Saturday, my friend!
Your friendly neighborhood beauty addict,
Karen

Wow! That sounds an amazing way to spend a Saturday. I like to start my Saturday with yoga on the waterfront followed by lunch at a favourite cafe. Then I usually walk my friend’s dog or cat sit for my neighbour/friend. 💕🐈
That sounds like the purr-fect Saturday, Mel! Enjoy your day!
Happy Saturday!
My mom is Lithuanian and cabbage is a huge staple food from the “old country” which is very agrarian. She halves it, slices it thinly and then boils it with water, vinegar and caraway seeds and salt. I’ll get the exact recipe and send it along shortly. It is yummy day 1 but the days after warmed up in the microwave are even better as the flavours are nicer.
If you have leftovers my Irish father’s side of the family takes the previously cooked cabbage tosses it in a pan with a little oil, butter or Pam spray on the pan first and then you can add sliced or cubes pieces of ham, salt and pepper to taste and you have Calkanen. You can add chunky potatoes or mashed potatoes too if you like and simply mix it all up. Delicious!!!!
I love Saturdays for reading a book at anytime anywhere and not feeling guilty about it like I should be doing something else with my time like tackling my to do list. Thanks for your list. It’s nice to see a fellow Saturday lover!
Thank you for these recipes, Vita! They sound yummy (although I’m unfamiliar with caraway seeds. I guess it’s similar like fennel?).
I finally got a chance to take a picture with the cabbage… Seriously, it’s bigger than my head.
What book are you reading today? I’m currently re-reading one of my favorites from this last year, “Klara and the Sun.”
Caraway seeds are very similar to fennel and they are often used in the making of rye breads.
I am reading the Divorce Party by Laura Dave. I read her latest hit book The Last Thing He Told Me and am now bingeing all of her books. And all are available at our local library which is so fun (and environmentally friendly IMO). I also read her book 800 Grapes and cannot decide which of those first two I liked the most. Easy reads and compelling characters. I like her writing. Try one out and see what you think. I’m going to check the one you are reading out. It must be good if you are re-reading!
Don’t you love it when you find a writer you enjoy with LOTS of books to choose from? I will try her out! 🙂
I read “Klara” earlier this year and there was something so quiet and moving about it. It’s by Kazuo Ishiguro, who also wrote “Remains of the Day” and “Never Let Me Go.” His writing is absolutely gorgeous.
Harry Styles is the only man who could cover Juice and be awesome!
Ya know, I don’t know a lot about his music, but now I’m curious because I really like this cover! What are your top 5 songs from him? I’ll listen to them today while I’m cooking!
I actually don’t know. I am old lol! I’ve just see clips of his concerts and his fashions. I love me a man who can wear pearls and carry a purse with confidence! I’m going to have to look up his music too because he seems totally fun. We have to find a young person to tune us in!
The first thing I noticed were his pearls! I bet you his accessories collection is all kinds of fun. 🙂
That beautiful head of cabbage has cabbage rolls written all over it😊
I just looked up a recipe from one of my favorite sites (Laura In the Kitchen) and it looks relatively easy! I might try it!
Saturdays are honestly the best, as you have the promise of Sunday as additional day off! It makes both relaxing and getting things done much easier.
I know I missed the cabbage party, but I’m glad the cabbage rolls turned out well. Ina Garten has a very simply (GF) fried cabbage recipe. Literally, just thinly sliced with butter and salt/pepper. Surprisingly delicious. Boiled dinner is also super easy. Basically ham, potatoes, onions, carrot and cabbage. We like to serve ours with horseradish sauce, but you might not care for it because it has quite a bit of heat. It might also be hard to find one that’s gf. Just in case you get another cabbage!
