Why is drawing with lipstick on watercolor paper so entertaining? LOL! Happy Saturday, friend. El Hub and Connor left early this morning to go fishing, so I have a rare Saturday morning to myself. I made French toast and coffee and watched a cheesy “woman in peril” thriller on Apple TV (“Surface,” starring Gugu Mbatha-Raw), and you know what? It’s like I barely even know how to relax anymore. I managed to successfully force myself to sit on the couch and do nothing for a bit, though, and it was kinda glorious.
Have you heard about this show? It’s set in San Francisco, and it’s about a woman who loses her memory in a traumatic way. She doesn’t know if her husband tried to kill her, and with the help of an undercover police officer, she searches for the truth.
I lived in San Francisco for a few years, and my big issue with the show so far is how the main character rarely wears layers. She’s always out and about with bare shoulders. Someone please give this woman a lightweight sweater and a blazer at the bare minimum! It’s a travesty. Side note: my guess is the husband is the bad guy.
What’ve you been watching lately?
This week’s reading
- Favorite read of the week ——–>“What exactly is an Old Lady Perfume? The term is generally applied to perfumes launched between the 1920s to the 1980s. And though the fragrances that fall under the Old Lady Perfume umbrella aren’t a monolith, there are some common threads.”

This looks like fun!
I wish I was dancing in this video.
I’m listening!
What’s your morning routine?
A great cover or my favorite New Order song.
Have a great rest of your weekend. I will now attempt to tackle a mountain of laundry. It never ends!
Your friendly neighborhood beauty addict,
Karen

I wish I had known about those scratching shields when we had Nora. I used double sided tape to adhere clear contact paper sticky side out to the edges of my chairs. Clumsy, but the sticky feeling worked and she didn’t scratch. She also preferred the cardboard cat scratchers from T.J.s to an upright pole. Nibbler likes her scratching posts and isn’t interested in the furniture. Thank goodness.
I miss Barney’s in SF. They carried La Bouche Rouge line. At that price point I want to be able to swatch in person rather than taking a chance with online photos of colors.
If Connor and El Hub catch some fish are you going to cook it up for dinner tonight? Or are they strictly “catch and release” fishers?
El Hub is a “fish for food” kinda guy (he knows how to gut the fish and everything), while Connor is “catch and release.” They got back a while ago and unfortunately had no luck! Looks like we’re having pizza tonight. LOL!
What are you up to this weekend?
BTW I haven’t seen those scratchers at TJs in a minute.
I hope they still had a good father/daughter time together despite not catching any fish. Pizza is good, although I like fish a bit more.
I feel like I ought to take some watercolor paper with me to swatch colors when I go looking for lipstick now. Somehow I just don’t want to test lipstick on my lips in the store anymore.
I ran to the fishmonger and got a hunk of salmon for dinner tonight. Also ran to pet store to get more cat litter bags. Ugh. Dear Husband is setting out shirts for me to fold and pack. He’s leaving for a work trip before the crack of dawn tomorrow. Just me and Nibbler for the next 4 1/2 days. (And some visits from my trainer.)
They did! This was her first time fishing with a real hook and bobber, so she was very excited. I think I’m going to eventually learn how to fish because, eh, it’s a life skill, so why the heck not.
If you bring a pad of watercolor paper, you can also take along a pen/pencil so you can label your swatches and keep track of them!
Have a yummy dinner and a great rest of your night. We just got back from Home Depot; I spent a lot of time annoying the people in the blinds/roller shade/curtains section, hahaha. There are so many window treatment options, omg. I think I’ll end up short circuiting and picking something really boring and neutral.
Then pen/pencil to label the swatches is a good idea. I also feel the lighting in stores is way off.
I feel you on the window treatments! We used to have a row of old oaks and other trees running along the back of our yard, so I never got window coverings for the kitchen or family room because the trees provided shade and privacy. The oak started listing more and more and finally I convinced Dear Husband and the neighbor behind us (the tree was on their prpoerty) to call out the city arborist to inspect it before it fell down on our house. Sure enough the inside was completely eaten away by Armillaria. So that tree came down. Then two more. Now I’ve noticed fading on things we own that are in the sun all morning long. And I’m pretty sure my neighbors can see in and see how messy I am, lol. But dang, do I get wooden blinds to match the shutters in the rest of the downstairs. How do I cover the tall sliding glass doors to the yard? Do I just do the rooms at the back of the house or do I have to redo the living room and dining room to match? And how much is all this gonna cost and who installs it? Too much info, too many options, too confusing.
On another note, Dear Daughter texted me this morning asking “What is sporty cute and how do I dress that way?” She was invited to a friends bachelorette party and one of the events said to dress that way.
Granted, I know very little about home decor, but here is my best guess:
Do I get wooden blinds to match the shutters in the rest of the downstairs? I’m inclined to say yes. If you already like the wooden blinds, save yourself the trouble of trying to find a new style .
How do I cover the tall sliding glass doors to the yard? Curtains, probably. A lot of people do shades/blinds now, apparently (says the internet!). The guy I spoke to at Home Depot suggested vertical blinds, but I’m like NO EFFIN’ WAY. Too noisy, the blinds end up going in the wrong direction, too reminiscent of sh*tty apartments.
Do I just do the rooms at the back of the house or do I have to redo the living room and dining room to match? Save this question for another day. LOL!
And how much is all this gonna cost and who installs it? I heard from the Home Depot windows guy that there is a sale happening now for 30% off. They also have a Labor Day sale coming up, where he *thinks* the prices will go to 40% off.
RE: sporty cute. I’m thinking head-to-toe Adidas would be cute. Or Athleta? Your daughter may be raiding your closet!
Thanks for the thoughts/advice on window treatments. I never thought of going to Home Depot in my search. Probably more affordable than the options I’ve been looking at. Vertical blinds = ewwwww! Too much like the weird, crappy places I lived while in my 20’s.
I think my daughter does not want to have to shop before this bachelorette weekend. She’s living in D.C. right now. The event is in Portland. The wedding is in the fall in the Seattle area. For her birthday present Dear Husband agreed to pay for her airfare, since this is one of her best friends from high school and college.
Honestly, I would’ve never thought of Home Depot either. They seem to have a lot of choices, though. I’m still going to check out a few local places in town that do blinds just to keep all my options open. I’ve also been putting together a list of window treatments I like! I get a lot of ideas from Pottery Barn, which is very much my style (the prices, though, OY).
I was looking at The Shade Store because they have two local outlets close by. And also Smith and Noble online.
I agree about Pottery Barn. Haven’t bought anything there since Dear Daughter was born. The chair we bought is 29 years old and holding up well, much better than the sofa we bought at Room and Board.
I saw the article about “Old Lady Perfume” on the internet the other day. According to that, I have smelled like an old lady since I was a teenager! I was shocked by some of the classics that they consider “old lady” including Chanel. Boy, I wish I had know n about the cat scratch shield a couple of years ago. I am afraid it is too late for my sofa, but what a great idea, I bet someone made a fortune off of that!
Hi Daphne,
I know the writer, Jane Daly! She is very cool, and she has her own perfume called Eau de Jane (which I own and love).
After Tabs destroyed the last sofa, I decided to buy the sturdiest material I could. We ended up with a couch made from Sunbrella fabric, which is (mostly) cat proof.
Luckily our cats were never interested in furniture, but as they were outdoor half of the day, I guess they just took it out on the trees outside.
And I don’tknow how to relax anymore either, being alone without the kids usually means I do things like sort out stuff or file papers, and that really isn’t my idea of relaxation.
Regarding that “smell like an old lady” article, I’ll never forget when I treated myself to a small bottle of Chanel coco Mademoiselle and spritzed it, only for my ex to exclaim, “Ew, you smell like an old lady!” I’m assuming he caught a glimpse of the Chanel bottle and assumed I brought home no. 5 and had his programmed reaction ready despite the scent. He also said the same thing about a different perfume he bought me, black opium. The memory still baffles me because Coco Mademoiselle is a sweet, fresh, youthful fragrance.
That’s crazy! Mademoiselle smells so youthful to me!
