Are you going through any beauty service withdrawals right now?
Because I am. I ran into my neighbor the other day (not literally; we obeyed the 6-ft rule), and the first thing she said was, “Look. JUST LOOK!” while pointing at the top of her head, where a fresh crop of grays had sprung up since the shelter-in-place order started. She said she really, REALLY misses visiting the salon.
I told her I felt her pain… I’m desperately missing the salon, but not for a hair coloring service (I started growing out my grays last year). I want a haircut, because this thing on my head is out of control! My last cut was almost a year ago when Tabs passed away, and now the layers have grown out, so I feel like I’m wearing a wet golden retriever on my head. ?
Man, I should’ve made an appointment back in February.
On the glass-half-full side, I’ve never been happier about growing out my grays! ? Seriously, if someone would’ve told me a year ago it would actually come in handy during an upcoming global pandemic crisis, I would NOT have believed them, but ya know…here we are.
What beauty services are you missing right now?
Your friendly neighborhood beauty addict,
Karen

My brows are CRAY! ? I miss Prima, my brow lady. Related to this, Jezebel recently published a thoughtful piece about the unique challenges black women are facing doing their hair during this time. As you probably already know black hair often needs a lot more time and attention to stay healthy.
I still have all the hair products I need right now but I’ll probably run out in about a month. I use a purple shampoo from ULTA to continuously dye my hair. It’ll look funky if I run out! ?
Speaking of hair products, I’m slowly but surely running out of conditioner! I never thought I’d see the day.
Are you plucking the stray brow hairs? That always helps.
The nail salon! My nails have been wrapped for 20+ years and now I’m going to have to take them off and try Zoya Gelie-Cure on my own to protect them until I can go back. I’m terrible at doing my own nails so I hope I can handle this! Luckily I had my highlights and cut done a couple of days before the salons closed here in NY. I still have St Patrick’s Day nails though, LOL!
I was booked in for a haircut about 5 days after we went on lockdown, and of course the salon I go to has closed. Luckily my last cut was a bit shorter than normal, so it still looks ok. Plus, my hair is curly which hides a lot of sins.
The only issue is my baby bangs are quickly becoming curtain bangs, but that’s ok ?
I have short messy, spiky hair and I need a haircut desperately!! So bad that I bought scissors at CVS and I needed thinning shears that I found at Pet Co of all places. I figure thinning shears are thinning shears no matter who’s hair your thinning. Although, I’ll try to cut into my hair before using them. I have zero hair cutting experience but we’ll see.. I am still working as a X-Ray/CT tech in a local ER so with all the PPE we are now wearing (when we have it) no one will be able to tell anyway, right?
Never thought to look at PetCo for haircutting tools, that’s genius.
Stay safe and healthy, Hollie. Thank you for doing what you do for the community!
Bikini waxing! Enough said!
And once this is all over I am booking myself a massage!
Right before this hit I was going to stop getting waxed and schedule laser hair removal on my legs, bikini, and underarms. I’m awkward at self waxing so now I shave and I absolutely can’t stand it. I might purchase an epilator I hate it so much. And I liked getting a pedicure on occasion. However, similar to you, I didn’t realize how well I’ve prepared my hair for this! I stopped highlighting and covering grays a year ago and grew out my layers so I have just one length with bangs. Just cut my bangs myself, but it took 20 minutes over 2 days (Are these short enough? This side looks longer…)
My brows have crossed that line where maintenance plucking or Bliss wax isn’t enough and they need an actual waxing by an actual professional. And while I can color my hair (although I hate doing it), I also need an actual cut by an actual professional.
Women of the world are going to have to make a pact that, when we’re all released from this quarantine, we just tell each other how great we look. No matter how pale or hairy we are or how many pounds we’ve gained. “Girl, you look fabulous! Quarantine had nothing on you!”
I was a few months overdue for a haircut and I’m at the point where the layers are tangling up too easily and making my hair a bird’s nest. I would LOVE a haircut. I don’t get my nails or brows or anything else done.
All of it! As soon as this is over: haircut, highlights, massage and nails (Then I will be too broke to go out anywhere). I keep getting an auto reminder that I’m getting my hair highlighted Thursday evening. Such a tease.
Now that the weather is getting warmer, I would love to get a pedicure. I try to scrub my heels in the shower with a pumice stone, but it’s just not the same as a professional.
I got a cut and color before everything shut down, so I’m not too worried about my hair. I’m actually taking this time to grow out my eyebrows. I’ve been tweezing for years and I think I may have a few bald spots, but I’m hoping I can get them to be a little thicker.
omg those craft scissors to cut hair and your expression must have REALLY made El Hub miss his barber!
Definitely a hair cut. I usually have short hair, but I tried a new hair stylist in January and she convinced me to let it grow a bit. I was going to get another haircut in March. I was looking for one of my old stylists but the salon he worked at closed down. Through some sleuthing I found out he opened his own salon in the next town over. I was about to make an appoint in March when the first Bay Area shelter in place went into effect. Sigh. My hair is now long enough to put into a pony tail. I haven’t worn a pony tail since I was in college. Too make matters worse it now looks like the right side is longer than the left. At least Dear Husband doesn’t notice.
And my brows are getting bushy too. Wonder if I can figure out threading on my own?
I had to remove my acrylic nails. They are not pretty! Not to mention my twice monthly pedicure. And then there’s the hair!
Soooo glad I had gone to “stunning silver” locks a long time ago! But – just took off the last of my toenail polish this morning (haven’t seen my naked toes in YEARS) – I miss my pedicures!
I need a pedicure in the worst way! I started giving myself one the other day and between the fact that it’s been eight weeks–I never imagined that all the salons would be shut down–and the fact that I’m so out of practice, it took like two days and I still haven’t painted them yet. That’s tonight’s task.
My hair is okay. I have an appt May 1 for a cut and color. I have a new hairdresser who works out of his home so I’m hoping and praying he’ll see me even if this dang shelter in place is still going on.
But, the good news is I still fit in the same pants I started the quarantine with. I’ve been buying record amounts of candy when I grocery shop but I’ve been measured in my consumption.
I’m so grateful because I miss nothing! I’m all DIY baby! Manicures, highlights….. tho that explains why the front half of my hair is blonde, and the back brown….
I am not a girly girl like really into maintenance but I want my hair , brows , nails and toes done. The works . I even want a facial. Yes. The works.
Definitely my lash extensions, brows and nails. My right eye is almost bald of lashes, but weirdly my left is still ok. Nails and toe nails are screaming for gel infills and I’m sure will start breaking soon…
Strangely here is Australia hairdressers are still allowed to be open. Bizarre.
If anyone has any tips (no pun) on how I can do my nails/toes at home without completely ruining the actual nails, would love to hear it.
Stay well everyone. From DownUnder.
Actually what I’m missing is not being able to shop IRL, I wanted to dye my hair platinum blonde again (yes, quarantine is making me crazy) but I don’t feel like buying online all the hair stuff (I don’t trust myself that much).
An off topic question (that I also made on Instagram, sorry): I’m thinking about buying MAC F&B but I’m unsure of the shade, right now I’m paler than you (Estée Lauder 3W2/1), do you think that C4 would be a better match?
Thank you!
Definitely missing my hairstylist. She does my hair so beautifully. It’s really far too long and my hair is starting to fall out as a result (damn lupus.) Come on, why are hairstylists not deemed essential workers??
Hairstylists are too close to their customers – if they were shedding virus (asymptomatically or otherwise) they would get it on you. Definitely not worth the risk.
Have you ever heard of a rhetorical question? I, the person with 5 autoimmune diseases, really should know why it’s not the risk. Do you think I don’t know that? Yes, it was a completely rhetorical question. Yes, I also realize it is a first world issue and also an issue for someone with disposable income. But yes, it’s upsetting because I have a disease that causes my hair to fallout and the last thing I want is another do-gooder reminding me of why I can’t get my hair done when I’m genuinely having a medical issue with it and there is no one who can do it and hide my bald spots. Sure, I can cut it myself, but it will show every bald spot that I have.
Do you recognize how stressful and ultimately how much it tears at your self-esteem? No, you probably don’t. So, please, tell me once again how much it’s not worth the risk to get my own hair cut.
I’m sorry. I truly did not intend to offend anyone.
My hair salon! I need a relaxer like nobody’s business. I’m about to have my fiance help me with an at-home kit. So suffice it to say that our relationship is about to move to another level….
I miss the hair salon too. I need a trim. I’m growing my hair out longer, but need the layers cleaned up. Me thinks I look a bit frumpy. LOL!! By the way, I love that maniacal look on your face, when you’re holding those scissors Karen. It is too funny!! Definitely made my day!!
Nothing, really. I do my own hair dyeing, and only get it cut about twice a year. I do my own nails. I never have anyone work on my eyebrows. I think people will learn a lot about what they can avoid paying for this year, without ruining their lifestyle.
I know you don’t like gel manis but I miss them and pedicures too. I’m gonna look like a cavewoman when this is over LOL
I’m with you!! I had finally scheduled a haircut in early March after going without since last August, which was rescheduled due to my stylist’s mom passing (poor thing!), and then the world went crazy. Really trying hard not to touch it but I have to admit I’ve cleaned up some obvious unevenness in front. I get my eyebrows tinted and waxed, and they’re definitely starting to fade. At least I have makeup and razoring to help that. ?
I wish I could embrace my gray, but I’m really missing my hair stylist/colorist. I was actually trying to grow out my hair a little longer so I don’t need a cut, but definitely need a root touch-up. Glad you’re hanging in there, Karen! Stay healthy.
Luckily I stopped my lash extensions back in February and have been growing my natural lashes back or that would be a mess. I would say my hairstylist for sure. My blonde highlights are growing out. I’m going to look like Joe Exotic by the end of this!
Very happy to have embraced my grays at this time! Loving being silver more than ever.
My haircut is medium length and pretty basic so my missed appointment last week isn’t really that big of a deal. I can make it another month or so if need be.
Luckily I got my gel polish removed (which I can NOT do at home) right before things got too cray so I’m able to keep up my nails at home. Which I’m able to do just fine. However, I will treat myself to a full mani when this is all over to take care of my wild cuticles and let a professional refine my nail shape! And just – because I enjoy it!
Though I’m keeping up the brow tweezing, I look forward to a proper shaping when this nonsense is over.
