Okay, so you how when you’re in the mood to do a dramatic eyeshadow look, and you start with just a few colors, but the next thing you know you’ve got, like, 10 different shades all up on your lids?
Welcome to my world, chica.

I don’t know what it is, but when I see all of those lonely pans looking up at me hopefully, I can’t help myself. A little bit of this one here, a tiny bit of that one there. OOH! A dash of this one to accentuate everything else. 🙂
Sometimes I wonder if I have some kind of medical makeup condition that compels me to use four different browns in the crease.

While it’s fun to get carried away doing complicated eye looks while completely ignoring the clock, I think it’s also fun (and usually more practical) to see what drama can be had with one or two shades, tops. The funky colors in the new MAC Eye Shadow X 2 Duos ($25 each) from the upcoming Colourizations collection are here to help.
Today I took Double Feature 3’s matte teal and chocolate satin out for a spin…

This smokey brownish teal look isn’t exactly what I’d call quick. It required more layering and blending than I usually have time for, (about 20 minutes just to do my eyes), but if you have a concert, a party or a club date with your girls and have the extra time to get ready, it could be a lot of fun.
I’m going to try to resist experimenting with any other Colourizations combos (CAN’T WAIT to try Double Feature 7’s bright fuchsia and black!) for the next few hours so I can wear this look out to dinner tonight. El Hub and I are celebrating our fifth wedding anniversary today, and the colors in the Double Feature 3 duo oh-so-conveniently match my favorite green dress. 🙂
Additional makeup worn in this look…
- FACE — MAC Strobe Cream, MAC Studio Sculpt Foundation in NC42 and MAC Studio Careblends Powders in Light Plus, Medium Dark and Dark
- EYES — NARS Pro-Prime Smudge Proof Eyeshadow Base, Benefit Instant Brow, Urban Decay Cannonball Mascara and Buxom Amplified Mascara
- CHEEKS — MAC Semi Precious Mineralize Blush in Pressed Amber and MAC Mineralize Skinfinish in Semi Precious Goldstone
- LIPS — MAC Lip Pencil in In Synch and MAC Lipglass in Evolution Revolution
Anywho, what was the last dramatic eye makeup look you did, and did you use several shadows or just a few?
Your friendly neighborhood beauty addict,
Karen

Wow, Karen! You look absolutely beautiful!
I love this look! Thanks for sacrificing your eyelids! Hahahaah…this Double Feature 3 is on my wish list, as well as the other items like mascara you listed down-lashes look awesome! Congratulations on your 5th wedding anniversary!
Wow, that is vivid! I haven’t done dramatic in a while, but I think the last one involved lots of Carbon and She Who Dares.
Well crap, I wasn’t even looking at these duos, but you have made this one look amazing!! I love the eyes so much 🙂
Oh, the eyes! So gorgeus!!! I love everything!
You look gorgeous!! Enjoy your dinner with Your Hub. 🙂
The last dramatic look I did was last month using NARS Dogon duo.
Wow, you look breathtaking Karen! El hubs is a lucky man! That teal looks amazing on your eyes. And happy anniversary again! I hope you crazy kids have a great night!
You are knocking the eye looks out of the park! Just beautiful!
That is STUNNING. I think I need this duo along with 4, I think. Whichever one has the teal and the camel color. Funny, I thought I could skip this collection.
Stunning!! Makes me want to try something daring!
WOOOWWW Karen — that is a hawt, sultry, smokey look! i love it! id have to say the combo in that duo totallytotally works!
Nice make up . Stunning Earrings like them 🙂
I, too, have been playing around with NARS Dogon duo for a dramatic look lately. However, I tend to go with lighter, brighter looks in the summer.
Happy Anniversary! I hope you two have a great evening!
You look beautiful, love the eye makeup! Congrats on the anniversary!
I think MAC should hire you to do their promotion for this collection because you have totally sold me on this duo…stunning!
xx
Alicia
You look stunning! This look is making me rethink these duos. Happy Anniversary.
Hands down one of my favorite looks you’ve done. Happy Anniversary!

Happy Anniversay! You look stunning!
Happy Anniversary to you and El Hub!! You look so lovely! Hope you guys have a wonderful night <3
Love this look so much, Karen! That eye combo is perfection!
Beautiful Karen 🙂
Happy Anniversary Karen..
I love the look! I wore parisian sky on my lids, outer smudged with with nehru and lined with deep truth this weekend, glamour check blended into the crease and blanc type as a highlight!
Wow, I love these dramatic eye looks (rates up there with the blue Nars look from a couple of weeks ago). I would love to see a video on how to do an eyeshadow look like this because I’m a total eyeshadow novice but I can see how it would be a bit difficult to tape if it took 20 minutes to create. If you are ever feeling generous though and wouldn’t mind posting a dramatic look like this you have a receptive audience out here.
Happy Anniversary! & please give Tabs a tummy rub-rub from me.
Wow that is an awesome eye look! I would have never thought to wear those colors that way! I am SO copying this! Happy anniversary!
That shade of green is a really good color on you!
Happy Anniversary!!! Those shades look absolutely gorgeous on you! I swear you could make anything look good!
Oh wow Karen! You look absolutely amazing! I wish I could make my eyes look that dramatic:)
Happy Anniversary to you and El Hubs! Enjoy your night:)
This look is so stunning on you! And OHH GIRL I hope you’re doing an Outfit of the Day with this!
Happy anniversary!!
I love this look! Greens are my favorite!
Wow, I love this look! These little palettes look very promising!
You look so beautiful Karen and the glow of celebrating 5th Anniversary is clearly visible 😉
Happy Anniversary Karen. 🙂
You look gorgeous! Have a fantastic anniversary dinner!
Hot!
People tend to think of me as a simple girl, so when I put on a bright blue eyeshadow on my lids, they think it’s dramatic and ask me what’s the occasion. Come on now, can’t a girl just enjoy playing with colours? ;D
And congratulations Karen, enjoy your dinner! 🙂
you look so pretty and glamorous
prettiest look yet Karen!!! Bravo. Proving simplicity is key
oh wow, this is just GORGEOUS!
hands down, the most beautiful look i’ve seen on you in the last year! =D
This look is great Karen, beautiful with the green dress! Have fun tonight! 🙂
This looks amazing Karen! I love the dramatic looks you do, they suit you so well 🙂
Happy Anniversary Karen!
Looking amazing, Karen. I like your neutral looks but I also like how you switch it up with these dramatic looks that scream class and elegance 🙂
Happy Anniversary!
Hey Karen! I’m new to your blog (been reading since March) and I love it! Evolution Revolution also rocks and can’t wait for it to get back in stock so I can buy more! Thank u for this post. I’m new to make-up and I get so intimidated with tutorials of eye looks that uses so many colors. So this is refreshing to see what can be done with only 2 colors. I can’t wait until you do the double feature 7 look. I fantasize about using a hot pink shadow but afraid of it being too much. I know you will give me great ideas on how to wear it. Thanks again :). Happy Anniversary.
In-love with that colour Eyeshadow! You look lovely!
Happy wedding anniversary!!
You look absolutely beautiful in those pictures! Both the eye look and the green dress suit you very well 🙂
That is hands down my favorite eye look you have ever posted!!!
Congratulations on your anniversary – Happy Anniversary! Your eyes look stunning and yes, it’s amazing how well the eyeshadow matches your dress.
Damnit Karen! I was convinced I didn’t need any of these and now I need this one! Lol…love you, you enabler…you look gorgeous :).
This is A-MAZING. I never wear colors like this, but I just might have to now! Happy Anniversary!
Absolutely stunning.
you look absolutely gorgeous, karen! =) congratulations on your 5 yr wedding anniversary! hope y’all had a wonderful time!
You look fantastic – that smokey eye is amazing! Congrats to you and El Hub; I hope you guys had a great date! 🙂
My best smokey eye recently was at the water park when my non-waterproof mascara and liner started running. Sadly, it looked less raccoon-like than when I actually try to do a smokey eye! Just kidding… sorta.
you look lovely Karen! 🙂
Wow, that looks great on you! Hope you and hubby have a great anniversary.
Happy anniversary karen!!!!! ….and i love the eyeshadow combo on you!
That’s a gorgeous look! The last dramatic look I did I used about 5 different shades, hehe. I don’t really have a lot of eyeshadows, so my selection was limited. So jealous of your makeup collection. 😛 You should do a tutorial using just two colors for a dramatic look…that would be way cool. 🙂
karen you look beautiful with dark eyeshadows 🙂
love love love !!
This one is my favourite Double Feature! I really can’t wait to get it!
Love this look! Totally gorgeous.
Karen! I love love love this look….so much so that I’m bringing some similar colours to Hawaii this weekend 😉 Thank you for the inspiration!
Gorgeous look! I wasn’t even looking to purchase any of these duos but now I think I need at least one. Thanks for sharing 🙂
ahhh yesss the post that i was looking for! thanks for the scoop about the new collection! & btw, you look gorgeous in the last picture! mmm~ 😉
Happy anniversary Karen! You look absolutely gorgeous!
Hey that looks like Expensive Pink in that fabulous orange eye shadow container 🙂 I simply cannot depot that one in my collection!
Hot damn! I love this one! That’s the pallets that caught my eye the other day in the swatches, do Noe I really have an excuse to get it! 🙂
The last complicated eyelook I did was last week for my boyfriend’s graduation. It consisted of a peach-colored steamy eye (Lighter than a smokey eye, but with the same concept and technique) and then some sweet black cat liner with a vivid hot pink line traced over the black. Ooh, and some 3/4 lashes to Finnish the blow. Actually went beautifully with my purple cocktail dress. Ugh, wish I had time to do that everyday.
I LOVE this look! Can you give us a step by step of how you did it?
This looks great! I love you with dramatic eyes! 🙂
My last dramatic look was probably 2 months ago (I’m lazy, what can you do) and I was using Sleek i-Divine Bad Girl palette 🙂 I used probably 3-4 shades from that palette and I loved how it looked! 🙂
Wow!!!! It looks amaaaaaaaaaaaaazing! Your best look ever created, for sure. I like it very much.
Gorgeous!! great look for u
Great look, Karen. I think I have to put DF3 on my list now! Can you do a look with the number 4?
That looks gorgeous! I love that combo and the way you applied it! I’m the same way with eyeshadows… I put a million and a half shades on my lids a lot of the time!
This look is FANTASTIC! Happy belated anniversary to you and the hubs! 🙂
That’s gorgeous, Karen. Do you think an NC30 with hazel eyes could pull that duo off? I bought three of duos from this collection and am now wondering if I should get this one too. This really is one of your most stunning looks!!
gorgeous! happy anniversary~
Your eyes look rad for fo sho! I want I want!! So far my fall list will be the blue from nars and this teal and brown…
That’s a gorgeous look! Also, I know I’m a tad late (been sick this week, grr), but happy anniversary! 🙂
This look is STUNNING! It’s one of your best FOTDs EVER! Simply epic.
Is there a dupe for this teal color? Just seen the swatches for the new UD pallette for fall and there’s a teal color that looks a lil similar. Xoxo
Love this look … it’s freaking awesome 🙂
