Why I bought it
My birthday is right around the corner and all I have to say is 25 was a looooooong time ago, ya’ll. I don’t know if the upcoming birthday is the catalyst for all of these anti-aging products that I’ve been using as of late, but hey, it never hurts to get a head start, right?
I’ve been using different AHA (alpha hydroxy acid) products, and although I’ve been mostly happy with the results, I thought I’d try something new with BHA (beta hydroxy acid) product, which is why I picked up this jar of Olay Age Defying Daily Renewal Cream Beta Hydroxy face moisturizer.
What it’s supposed to do
Olay Age Defying Daily Renewal Cream is for normal, dry, oily or combination skin. This oil-free face and neck cream is supposed to significantly reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles, and lift away dull, dry skin. The beta hydroxy acid, salicylic acid, is the fourth ingredient listed.
What I liked
This cream smells really good. It has a soothing, light, rose smell. The texture is excellent as well. It’s fluffy and not heavy, and sinks in easily.
What I didn’t like
I’ve used salicylic acid products in the past to treat acne, and they never worked for me then so I should’ve known I was setting myself up for certain disaster. This cream ended up breaking me out; I ended up with little red bumps on my forehead and cheeks. I know that with certain products there is a purging period but after two weeks I couldn’t take it any more, so I quit using this cream and returned to using benzoyl peroxide. Lo and behold, my skin went back to normal. I don’t think that I used this long enough to get any significant reduction of fine lines and wrinkles – I didn’t see any real change.
The final word
I had over half of this jar left, so instead of throwing it out I’ve been using it on my bikini line as a cheapie version of Tend Skin, and it’s actually been working for me. Tend Skin is a liquid product that is supposed to prevent ingrown hairs and bumps, and the active ingredient is also a BHA (acetylsalicylic acid). Tend Skin is expensive – $35.00 for an 8 oz. bottle. If it works for you then you might want to consider Olay Age Defying Daily Renewal Cream as a cheaper alternative.
I’ve read that Olay Age Defying Daily Renewal Cream is comparable to Clinique’s Turnaround Cream, which is $32.50 for a 1.9 oz jar. If you want to save some money then Olay could be a cheaper option for you as well.
I won’t be buying this cream again, mostly because BHA’s do nothing for my face. However, if your skin responds well to salicylic acids then Olay Age Defying Daily Renewal Cream is an affordable drugstore product worth considering.
Last night was pretty mellow. I’m still recovering from the excitement of my trip so the hubby and I went on a pizza date and then watched a movie. It’s been so cold here in the bay area! It’s grey and overcast and just plain blah. I have to run some errands today and I might just have to bust out my Jenny-From-The-Block down jacket. Wherever you are I hope you’re warm!

I am 32 and I started using Olay’s Age Defying Night Cream. I am using it because I am sick of my skin being dull. I have very firm skin and no wrinkles. Have I picked up the wrong product? Plz can you find the time to mail me if u have anything to say?

Hi SV,
It really depends on finding out what works and what doesn’t work for your skin. Through trial and error I’ve found that for me, Beta Hydroxy creams does absolutely nothing in terms of brightening/removing dullness. It might be totally different for you … it’s just a matter of testing the product out and being aware of what your skin likes/doesn’t like! There are lots of options for you if a BHA doesn’t work: there’s alpha hydroxy acid based products, vitamin C products, just to name a few. Be sure to keep your receipts in a safe place and shop from stores with a good return policy so that if the product doesn’t work you can get your money back! Good luck, and please come back soon!
Ok so I realize this comment is from FOREVER ago but I couldn’t resist puttin in my 2c even if people might not read it. BHA is salicilic acid so basically any over the counter product will work. I like the neutrogena cleansing pads with it, I always use those right before putting on my AHA cream at night which is amazing. Most AHA’s are suuuper expensive but if you haven’t heard of it yet, there’s a line called just AHA and they’re carried at Rite-aid or somewhere like drugstore.com. Besides they’re pretty hard to find but get this- you can get a HUGE amount of the cream for about $10-12 bucks, PLUS its a 10 or 12 % solution, PLUS it stays within a good ph as to not irritate your face. Anyway, had to give up the info because this stuff will totally change your face and it’s cheap. yayers!
I’ve recently tried this cream as well, it worked well for me, but I’m also starting to breakout. I think its my undergrounder whiteheads that are finally breaking the surface, so I must be purging. I was curious if you were purging as well or if you’re allergic to BHA and that’s what caused the breakouts. I’m debating if i should stick with this cream for a while longer.
