I gotta give props to Francois for his ability to think outside the beauty box, this time with a twist on traditional summer lips.
Described as a sheer apple brandy, Coup De Coeur Lip Gloss ($24) reigns supreme as the lone NARS lipgloss for summer 2010.
Gosh, it takes me back… To the ’90s! And Buffy the Vampire Slayer, baby t’s, spaghetti strap dresses and those little black backpacks of days gone by. 🙂
On me I think it looks like a creamy reddish brown (maybe a little more fall than summer?) that lasts about three hours on the lips, and it shares the same smooth, non-sticky feel of other NARS glosses like Supervixen (LOVE!
).

Ya know, I like it … but I’m undecided on how I feel about about it for summer. It makes me think “responsible,” and my heart is telling me it wants — even though they’re more typical of this time of year — fuchsias, hot pinks and corals.

Wearing Coup De Coeur
That said, I’ll always make room for another practical brown, especially one that’s hydrating and easy to wear. If you like neutrals, check out Coup De Coeur. 🙂 Makeup and Beauty Blog Rating: B
Your friendly neighborhood beauty addict,
Karen

I’m kind of into the unconventional summer colors that are coming out. like people are making the same accusation against Pret-a-papier but I love it when companies don’t just do the expected things season after season, especially in the warmer months it seems like quirky looks just go out the window.

Hi Knownever,
I can appreciate going against the tide too. Has anything in particular caught your eye?
It may not be a particularly orthodox summer color, but it DOES look great on you!
Hi Instant Karma,
Aww, thanks. I haven’t been a hard-core brown lip person since the 90s, but I still like wearing the color.
How’s your weekend going?
It looks pretty on you! I too remember wearing this type of colour way back when..I think for summer I prefer the corals, bright pinks etc. Save this one for the fall.

Hi Michelle,
It’s such a 90s color. I think I wore something similar on graduation day from college in (gulp) 1998.
wow, I like that a LOT! I kinda wanna try it…
Hi Shannon,
You should! One cool thing about the shade is that it should also transition nicely into fall.
The color reminds me of Stila Blackberry, which I think works great for layering over pink and red lipsticks. Looks good on you! 🙂

Hi Makeup Morsels,
Maybe I’ll try it over a pink or a red just for fun. Thanks for the idea!
It’s not a traditional summer color, but it looks faboo on ya. I bet it would look really good with Bobbi Brown Bonfire, which is also on the fallish side, but really makeup “rules” are made to be broken!
Hi Lisa S.,
Yes they are! 🙂 How’s your weekend going?
Not conventional for a summer colour but looks really gorgeous on you 🙂

Hi Karen B,
I gotta hand it to NARS for always keeping things fresh. Are you having a good weekend so far?
I had a pretty good weekend. Felt so good to be back at home on Saturday night 🙂

Aww brown lippies look amazing on you. I feel they make me look too made up. 🙂

Hi Princesa Livia,
You could always try a lip stain! Try dabbing a little MAC Paramount on your bottom lip and then press your lips together. It should look very pretty, but not overdone.
That looks fantastic. I think it could totally rock for summer with a bronzy/coral eye, cheek, nails.
Hi Steph B,
Good idea! Maybe I’ll try it with Coral Crepe Paint Pot from MAC. 🙂
How did the haircut go? What did you decide?
Opted for some face framing layers and leaving the length pretty much alone. It only recently got long enough to make a ponytail clean enough for work which I figure will come in handy as the days get warmer and I just need my hair off my neck.
Ive never really used color according to the seasons so I will totally go for this gloss. Plus its pigmented and will work with my slightly over pigmented lips! Awesome on you, Karen!
Hi Nina,
Happy Sunday! Neutral brown lips are timeless/seasonless, so you should be able to get a lot of mileage out of this color. 🙂
So, did Napoleon get the all-clear from the vet?
He did! 🙂 Now were trying to ease him into the household. He sleeps in the kitchen for now, and surprised us all by showing us that he knew how to use the litterbox. Awesome kitteehh! 😀
Happy Sunday to you too! The Liberty of London dresses are 30% off at Tarjey already — witwoo! The Zac Posen stuff is out, but they didnt really make my heart sing….
How you doin, Karen?
When you mentioned brown lipstick, I remember the days of brown lipstick where I like to wear mud brown lipstick. The browner the better. I even use brown eyeliner to make it look browner. Coupe de Coeur looks lovely on you, almost like a brick red.

Ha! My friends and I used eyeliner to line our lips too. Black was the preferred choice to go with dark, blood-red matte lipstick.
It seems like everyone loves nars lipglosses but I don’t know if it is worth shelling out the $24. I have not problem paying $18 for a dazzleglass but $24 just seems like a lot. Do you think it is worth it?
Hope your having a great weekend!
Sorry meant I have no problem. not not problem lol I think I might be just a little bit tired. 🙂
I never actually stoppet wearing brown. I love it and it loves me BACK.

I probably should try this on before flat out hating on it, huh? Plus since I am darker, NC42 and I have naturally dark pigmented lips – if anything this would be a good nude color on me!
I am very fair (NC15) and just picked this up today.
I love it. It definitely does feel unexpected and with some bronzer and my hair pulled back, it looks pretty lovely! Definitely pigmented on my pale skin.
