Although it’s fun to sometimes match your eyeshadow to your Cadbury Mini Eggs (mmm…chocolate), spring eye makeup doesn’t have to be all about sweet, sugary pastels.
This spring Dior’s showing off its spunky, tough girl side with a blast of hot pink and black in the new Cherie Bow 5-Couleurs Eyeshadow Palette in #854 Rose Charmeuse ($61, one of two quints in the collection).
Oui, oui, Rose Charmeuse also houses a few traditionally springy shades in its houndstooth patterned pans (so cute!) — a shimmery pinkish beige, a shimmery rose and a sheer, matte peach with golden glitter (which, by the way, looks a little like one of my favorite NARS eyeshadows of all time, NARS Night Star).
But for me, the shimmery hot pink and matte black shades are what turn this Rose into a fun, fresh way to wear smokey eyes.
I like to start by patting the black eyeshadow all over my lids as a base. Then, for a purplish pink smokey eye, I layer the hot pink shade directly on top, and blend the two together.
The hot pink by itself probably wouldn’t have been this wearable; I think it really benefits from the matte black.
The black shadow also works great as a base for the other colors in the palette and makes a bunch of different smokey eye effects possible.
Even better than that, though, is the black eyeshadow’s total lack of fallout. Almost all of the colors in the palette are like that, with exception of the peachy shade in the center (the glitter in it does get around…but I just let it do its thing, and then pretend that I did it on purpose, haha!).
Rose Charmeuse is a lot of fun. In the sweet, otherwise dainty Cherie Bow collection, Rose is like the spunky upstart who shuns kitten heels and pearls, and embraces motorcycle boots and leather pants instead.
Come spring, I plan to hang out with her often. Maybe we’ll even start some trouble together…

Gone Girl
I gotta say, WOW! I’m not usually into mystery and suspense books, but I loved Gone Girl, by Gillian Flynn.
I could not put it down. Every free second I had, I was reaching for the Kindle to find out what was gonna happen next.
The story sounds simple enough — a woman goes missing, the police suspect her husband, sh*z goes down — but the way the story is told, how the POV jumps back and forth between the husband and wife, hooked me like a fish. I kept shouting, “TWIST!” and “OH, NO!”
Great writing, too. Highly, highly recommended.

Wow, your eyes look stunning in those pictures Karen. I love this palette. I like pink eyeshadows but it’s hard to wear them on their own so paired with black makes a lot of sense. I think I might be tempted to buy this one when it hits the stores.

I love what you’ve done with the pinks. It’s a great blend of sweet and edgy. Actually, oddly enough, it reminded me of Grease (with the T Birds and the Pink Ladies – HAHA!).
Btw, I can’t remember if you said you’d seen it or not, but I was streaming Sherlock (BBC) on Netflix and have really been enjoying it. I think you might like it.

I LOVE Night Star. What is it about Nars? He does no wrong… Seriously! I like the colors a lot on you! I’m not sure I’d know what to do with all that shadow though! I can only handle 1 or 2 colors at a time!

I literally don’t go anywhere without it (it’s always on my travel makeup list). What do you usually like to wear it with? I usually do it all over my lids and then smudge a black liner on the lash lines.
Excellent. I’ll add this book to my Good Reads list. I’m kinda stuck in dystopian books right now and I’ve never read a mystery. Maybe Gone Girl will convert me.

Love Gone Girl until the end–totally crazy, out of character and waaaaay to far fetched. I agree the beginning and middle were very suspenseful but for me the ending was a real let down.
