Guilty pleasure No. 437: Butter sugar sandwiches
A layer of butter topped with sugar and sandwiched between two slices of soft, melt-in-your-mouth fresh Wonder Bread.
Oh, whatever! You know you loved those, too. 🙂
Loaded with fat, sugar and other carbs, they’re the perfect junk food trifecta (although not exactly the healthiest snack in town). Buttery manna from heaven.
When I was a kid, every afternoon when I got home from school, my babysitter would make one for me, and I’d eat it while watching Scooby Doo.
Ah, memories…
Gosh, I just got so hungry all of a sudden. Why don’t I fix us both a butter sugar sandwich (they really are quite good), and then we’ll play with the buttery yellow eyeshadow in the new MAC Eye Shadow X 4 quad in Colour Added ($38).
It’s the yellow pan in the picture below, and the color shares the same name as the quad.
I think it’s my favorite of these four shadows…

Doesn’t it remind you of a golden pat of butter with grains of sugar melting on top? Or is that just me? 🙂
Wait until you see it on skin! It does this shifty thing in the light, one minute going from a satiny, light yellow butter color, to a richer yellow gold, to a golden beige. It’s kinda neat, and I don’t think I have anything quite like it in my eyeshadow collection.
Believe it or not, it’s even pretty wearable, too, just like the rest of the colors in this limited edition eyeshadow quad (one of three in the new Shop MAC collection).
In the quad, light yellow Colour Added is joined by a satiny neutral called Laundry Daze (essentially a beige), a slate gray called Self-Serve and a shimmery turquoise called Pre-Packaged.
The turquoise and yellow shades are generous with pigment but don’t throw their weight around, and I really like the effect.
By putting together two neutrals with two user-friendly brights, MAC’s created a quad for makeup lovers who crave a little color, but don’t necessarily want to wear LOUD NEON BRIGHTS!

And kudos to MAC for selecting colors that mix together so well. Layering yellow Laundry Daze with blue Pre-Packaged results in a subtle green (see it there in my crease?). I also like the smokey, sultry blueish gray created by blending Pre-Packaged with deep gray Self-Serve.
That’s what I’m wearing along my lower lash lines in the pictures above.
I think all four of these shadows perform admirably, blending easily with very little fallout, and with colors that stick with me all day long without creasing or fading.
Now, this particular quad may not appease someone hooked on cutting edge colors, as it’s relatively mellow for MAC, but I’m a big fan. I think if you wear a lot of beige and gray but are interested in exploring more vibrant colors, Colour Added could be a great place to start.

Your friendly neighborhood beauty addict,
Karen

MAC does it again! And I’ve been loving your outfits lately, too!
Thanks, Antonia. 🙂 Hope you had a great Monday.
You wear these colours so well, Karen! I love that you can wear all four colours at once. That green in the palette is just incredible. Absolutely love it.
Thanks, Arianne! <3 Love to Scherbs!
Love that quad! Beautiful colors and they work so nicely together.
My daughter make a similar snack but it’s not a sandwich. Just the bread, butter and sugar. She calls it Fairy Bread. <3
Sounds good to me. I think I’m going to start calling mine Fairy Bread, too. 😉
Your eyeshadow look reminds me of MAC Turquatic.
It’s great. I don’t have the guts to pull it off myself.
My favorite MAC scent, ever! 🙂
I wish I had your guts — I’m a ‘fraidy-cat with makeup.
You can do it! Maybe just start by wearing it around the house at first?
Butter and sugar sandwiches? I have never heard of them, but oh boy they sound really good.
I feel like I’ve missed out now…:)
They are DELICIOUS. If you ever need comfort food after a long day, they hit the spot.
Did you catch Walking Dead last night? I’m starting to get kind of bored. I need more zombies!
Sold!
YES! I hope you give it a try when you hit up the MAC counter. 😀
Butter and sugar sandwiches? No thanks. But cinnamon sugar toast? Yes please!
Does that involve butter? I hope so!
Yes. But toasting the bread so everything gets melty and the bread crispy makes everything better.
this quad has yellow and gray eyeshadows in it. enough said. 😀
i have it and love it!
I had a feeling you’d be into this because of the gray! 😀
Have you tried mixing it with the blue yet? Super pretty!
ill def try that! 🙂 im always looking for combos to do with this quad!
wow, I thought butter and sugar sandwiches were something indian people did when kids don’t eat their vegetables. I didn’t know it was international! but now I want one….
Really? I always thought it was a Filipino thing, LOL!
Omg I thought I was the only one who use to have butter sugar sandwiches as a kid 😀
Sometimes To mix it up I would use honey instead of sugar. Great memories!
Karen, I’ve read that Self-Serve (the grey) has horrible payoff. What are your thoughts on it? Is this palette worth it for the gorgeous turquoise and yellow?
i have this quad and self serve works just fine for me. the payoff is not horrible at all.
I read that in more than one review, but the grey shadow in my quad is soft and swatched fine….no idea why others wouldnt be?
butter sugar sandwiches, yum! but we use toasted bread, the crisp toast makes it all the more yummy. and yeah, that used to be our “merienda” after school, too.
i love how the shadows can turn into green, too.
Beautiful!!
Lovely Karen, this palette looks fabulous on you! <3
Have a wonderful day!! 😀
This would make a GORGEOUS spring/summer look! LOVE the way you wear it Karen!
wow, what a great look!
This is a very pretty look on you. I think you’ve just convinced me to purchase this quad.
This color combo looks really nice on you. I especially like the yellow; it’s so cheerful but not over the top or anything. Really nice!
I’m not much for sugar, but I could eat the bread and butter part all day. When I was young, I used to slice a stick of butter and put the slices on wheat crackers. My arteries hurt just thinking about it! 🙂
Wow! The yellow is pretty and the blue too!
Too bad it’s limited edition….. And do I have to go hunt for this palette in the big city? Hmmm… :(((
It’s so pretty on you! I’m SO tempted to get this. My dad used to put sugar on cheese slices, (no bread) and I did that as a teenager sometimes. Weird, I know, but better than it sounds!
Been lurking forever, but your sugar sandwich post made me have to post! We had almost the same thing, but used Jello powder (which is mostly sugar!) instead of plain sugar. Sooooo tasty! 😀
And I like the combo on you – I’m way too chicken to wear colors like that (Queen of the Neutrals here) but it rocks on you!
Kim 🙂
Where is your top from, Karen? The colour looks so good on you!
I loved the bright shades! The other 2 seem a bit weak in pigmentation.
The more I look at this, the more I want it. The turquoise is simply divine.
So prettily put together. What a lovely look! 🙂
